One commenter says it was higher-wage employees with long tenures that were targeted for layoffs. Overtime has been eliminated as well.

Mardens has a store in Sanford, Me IIRC...It was the old Grants location.

That's Mardens' MO; they take over failed retail locations that meet their square footage criteria. Ocean State Job Lot does the same thing.
