Nice pictures Hojofan206 !!  Again, a picture of Augusta ME former Hojo restaurant (now Friendly's), side of the building with ice cream window:

Thanks Zare!!  It is sad to think that of the over 1000 original Howard Johnson's restaurants that were open at one time how many of the buildings are still standing today.

While its sad the old ones are gone, at least there will be new HoJo's coming soon! :)

HoJofan206

Yes, I have heard that news.  I really hope the plan/idea comes to fruitrition.

Fairfield California...this location has been abandoned for quite some time now.

Waterbury, Connecticut is losing its Howard Johnson's name after 49 years. After failing to negotiate with new franchise agreements with La Mancha Group, the owners of Waterbury have decided to move on. I am going there on the 26th, so I will take pictures.

I saw the news at Orangeroof.com... it's sad. This leaves 3 restaurants including the Bangor location (no longer orange roof):

Sadly the Waterbury was the last of the original Howard Johnson restaurants.  As pictured above, Bangor Maine is all but a HoJo eatery now days.  :-(

While it's sad it's not going to be a HOJO's anymore, the good news for Waterbury is the restaurant is gonna continue operating. It will have a new name.

The stupid Waterbury Republican (the local newspaper) charges to read the article even tho it was just in the paper on Saturday.

HoJofan206

Until I see any new HoJo eateries open under the LaMancha group, it is a sad loss each time another location closes down.  And then there were 3......

Lextington was a 1970's styled Mansard building.

HoJofan206

In its last years as a Hojo the restaurant was kept very neat and clean, as wel always remembered Hojo eateries.

HoJofan206

The interior, updated in the later 1990's still retained the familiar Hojo memories.

HoJofan206

Sadly, the restaurant, like so many others, gave up the Howard Johnson's name in Sept 2001.

HoJofan206

Today, (Feb 2007) the restaurant sits empty, yet mostly intact.

HoJofan206

Sadly, recent reports from Rich Kummerlow'es EXCELLENT Hojo sight are saying the location is being readied for another use, thus removing yet another HoJo piece of history from the map.

One last look at how we would like to remember Lexington Virginia's Howard Johnson's restaurant.

Even after 30 plus years, the orange tiles glissen in the sun.

Anyone interested in HoJo restaurant history should visit the sights of Walter Mann (www.hojoland.com) and Rich Kummerlow's sight (www.autoage.org)

These two gentlemen have spent a lot of time on their tributes to Hojo's and their efforts are appreciated!!
(Just as I apprecate all the efforts of the owens of this great sight!

A RARE FIND!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This current Howard Johnson's Inn in Ashville North Carolina has a restaurant named Chatt's (which was a spin-off of the HoJo-s eatery back in the 70's.)  From the road one would think they had happened upon a 2007 Howard Johnson's restaurant location!!  :duh:
