This is Tesco's attempt at a hybrid between a convenience store and a gourmet grocery store.  Tesco Express is very successful in England, but the stateside equivalent is struggling. They've been opening stores, closing stores, experimenting with new store formats, giving out coupons by the ton, introducing clubcards, and losing hundreds of millions of dollars a year.  One wonders how much longer Tesco will put up with it. They just announced 12 "temporary" store closures - a bizarre concept to say the least.

And now it's official - Tesco is pulling the plug on Fresh & Easy after five years. This excellent Brand Channel article sums up why they failed:

Roughly 50 stores not involved in the transaction will close; no word on whether the surviving stores will take on the Wild Oats banner
