Rendering of the Biddeford, ME Market Basket, which reuses the former Lowe's

The blurb from the Torphy Construction site:

"Market Basket has turned to TCD to construct their newest flagship store in Biddeford, Maine. The project involves converting a 139,000 sq ft former Lowe's building into a 106,000 sq ft supermarket and a 19,000 sq ft tenant space. Demolition of more than 800 feet of exterior wall and 55,000 sq ft of existing slab on grade is currently underway.  It will be followed closely by reconstruction of the exterior walls, installation of more than one mile of refrigeration lines under the slab and fit up for the new supermarket. The store will be one of the largest in the Market Basket chain and the first in the State of Maine."

Can't wait for Biddeford to open!  I hope it will pave the way for more Maine locations!

Meanwhile Bedford is open in NH.

MB is on a roll : http://www.nashuatelegraph.com/news/1003715-469/as-supermarkets-face-tough-times-market-basket.html

Judge rules against Hannaford

Does it hurt Hannaford's reputation?  Always being against any competition that wants to com by or expand.  Consumers that know Market Basket is cheaper must not like Hannaford's persistent fights against competition.

Thanks to social media, dirty tricks don't stay below the radar like they used to. Hannaford's reputation is definitely taking a beating.

This and a number of other recent stories also have the Biddeford, ME store opening this summer.

I like this: "Although the Biddeford store is the first to open in Maine, “I’m sure it won’t be our last,” said McLean."

There's certainly a lot of underutilized big box retail space in Maine. The Kmart in Auburn and the Lowe's in Windham spring to mind. The section of Payne Road in Scarborough by Cabela's could use a real shot in the arm, too.

Yes.  Will Biddeford be the first Market Basket in a big box shopping center?  I haven't seen them all but they usually are in smaller traditional strip centers.

Kmart or the former Home Depot in Bangor would be nice.  There is a spot for a Stop & Ship at the Augusta Crossing.  We all know that Stop & Shop gave up on Maine so MB could jump in. In Lewiston there is the former Sears.

They are really expanding fast and furious. I hope they don't expand themselves out of business.

With the amount of business they're doing, they have enormous cash flow and a huge cash hoard. The only limiting factor for them is their distribution center capacity, which will keep their expansion at a manageable pace. They appear to have the management depth to handle the pace of expansion they have undertaken, which is a key advantage over Wegmans. MB will be well-positioned to pick up the pieces when Shaw's does the inevitable mass closures under Cerberus.

This older, smaller store was the odd store out as MB prepares to open just up Amherst Street in the old Sears Essentials in Somerset Plaza (which Market Basket's real estate arm owns.) This would be, IIRC, only the second MB store to close in the chain's history.

They had to renovate it or close.

Keeping a large brand new store that close to an older smaller one would not have been good for the second store.

Wonder what will happen in Seabrook where two stores are also very close and only one is large and more recently renovated.

why did you say Kmart?

why did you say Kmart?

Kmart(Sears) appears to be ready to sell any of their leases to the highest bidder or to close stores whenever a lease ends.

Is Market Basket is ever interested in moving to Bangor, that space could be a prime spot for them and maybe if they place a offer, Kmart will take the money and run!

Bangor is pushing it, unless they develop their distribution infrastructure. Auburn or Augusta is about as far north as they could go at this point, I think.

Any official opening date for Biddeford?

That was the store in May:

The latest I've heard is that it'll be open by the end of August.

The greatest threat to Market Basket has never been rival supermarkets or Walmart or warehouse stores but the Demoulas family itself.

This could get ugly...they may have to sell if they need to finance a $1.5B payout
