Any one out there remember the Methuen Mall ? Original anchor stores were Sears & Howland ( A CT based dept store )
The location of Howlands was going to be Sutherland's (a Lawrence based dept store ) except a failed attempt at the just built Newington Mall in New Hampshire Tanked the store an Sutherlands Closed forever in 1976.

Yes.  Jordan Marsh was the other anchor*, at the opposite end from Sears.

*At least it was from 1978-1986, when my grandparents lived in that area.

Speaking of the Methuen Mall, does anyone recall the name of the restaurant that was at the Sears end, in roughly the same "block" as Midland Records, circa 1980?

 Some of the original restaurants were......... Papa Ginio's (Stayed to the very end)  Friendly's, Deering Ice Cream (Friendly's Knock off) Orange Bowl (in center heading to Sear's)  Patavina's Itallian & York Steak House (both located in rear wing near the Dream Machine Arcade)
Arter the Renovation in the 80's they added a Food Court.

Oh yes, that was quite a shameless Friendly's knock off!  They even had the same weathervane with the removable slats for the ice cream flavors.

Spent many a weekend at this mall and loved it.  Hard finding pics of the insides though.

Deering Ice Cream (Friendly's Knock off)

Oh yes, that was quite a shameless Friendly's knock off!  They even had the same weathervane with the removable slats for the ice cream flavors.

They may have "borrowed" some design elements from the golden-age Friendly's (not 100% sure about that, though) but Deering traces its roots back to 1886, while Friendly's was founded in 1935.  Charles Stickney Jr. owned the operation during its post-WWII growth spurt; his retirement coincided with the chain's downward spiral. Mr. Stickney passed away back in November.
