Wal-mart will not be going away anytime soon!  :o

LazarusFan

Wal-Mart.  Most of the business these days are mostly food.

Wal-Mart doesn't have all the great deals it once had.  Now Kohls they have some good deals and their stuff is higher in quality.  I compared a Kroger's and Wal-Mart grocery department and they were both the same.  I don't usually buy stuff at Wal-Mart anymore unless I have a gift card, I need jugs of water, or something I need at the last moment.  That's it.  I think the Chinese workers are striking for more pay and that what's causing the trouble.:insane:

I know its tough facing another future with a familar store gone. But it happens all the time in the retail world.

So based on what you know about a store what store do you believe is going to go out of business next?

Wal-Mart:P

Sears isn't going anywhere. They're the ones who bought Kmart remember? It's Kmart thats going out. And Toys R Us is staying too. They're Christmas sales were pretty good.

storehistoryguy

Toys "R" Us.

KMart? What are you talking about? And Sears? I'd say Kmart before they imerged with Sears, but now they are doing much better. Sears is also my favorite department store. (Not counting discount department stores.) I'd say Strawbridges and Clothier before Sears and Roebuck.

Yeah, they could always come back online, but it doesnt really mean anything. the new Montgomery Ward website is operated by Fingerhut, another catalog company and Service Merch. is just some private company using a Yahoo! Store

And what probably happened in these cases, is that a company bought the name and rights to Wards and Serv. Merch. to launch an online business now way related to the original chain stores.  Even Hechinger is back online!! http://www.hechinger.com/

Let's get some things straight here. Stores with household names like "Toys R Us" will live on even if the store's themselves die out. Personally, I don't believe Toys R Us will ever die because the name is synonymous with the American toy. Even if the stores ever die out, the name itself will be bought and carried on by someone. I believe this is why Sears purchased Kmart - because Kmart is one of the longest running mid-grade department stores. I think this is why Ward's still exists in some fashion... the Ward's name was like Wal-Mart back in the mid-century.

I find it odd how Hechinger's is now branded as some "unusual" tool store though...

*Shakes Head* You think that Sears is gonna make the same mistakes that Ward did. Wouldn't it make sense that If Sears goes out, that it would drag K Mart along with it?? Like I said before, the Sears- K Mart story is a lot different than the Wards-Lechmere one. Expect Sears to be around for a while yet.

Sears is not the next store to go out of business.  Eddie Lampert has a game plan for his company and he's not the kind of guy that wants to lose, especially lose money.  I don't think he will let Sears or Kmart gob.

Maybe he will sell some stores for their real estate value but now that the companies are profitable, they won't close in a near future.  Sears Holdings has 4 divisions and in recent news they have a cash surplus that could be invested in a new acquisition...

I agree with powersbt. Montgomery Ward's mistake was not expanding out of the downtown areas when they should have. They waited until later in the game. That, and the purchase of Lechmere paved the way for failure. Sears is FAR from making those mistakes. Sears is out there, and they have a gameplan. They know what they're doing. They bought Kmart for a reason, and they aren't about to let it fail and falter. I know I've said that Kmart would be going away, but that's just my opinion. I think that Kmart is too far gone to last, but I could be wrong. There's no way to tell. But Sears is definately a strong player.

Crawford

I agree, Sears gave K mart a badly needed influx of cash. I know the Kmart near me is not as grubby as it used to be. The Little Caeser's restaurant leaves a lot to be desired but on the whole the store was cleaner and had decent stock.

I would think the next stores to close would be the little niche stores like Strawberries (cd's are lot more expensive than Best Buy) and Kay Bee Toy Works. I don't think Barnes and Noble is doing all that great, their selection pales in comparison to Borders/Waldenbooks
"Through the millennia, the Time Lords of Gallifrey led a life of ordered calm, protected against all threats from lesser civilisations by their great power. But this was to change. Suddenly, and terribly, the Time Lords faced the most dangerous crisis in their long history..."--the Doctor

I agree with that.  Today, only two or thre strong players dominate each niche, the rest is facing stiff competition.  Best Buy and CircuitCity have a large chunk of market in electronics.  Bed,Bath & Beyond and Linens'n Things squeezed out smaller chains like Bed & Bath and Kitchen Etc.  Dick's and Sports Authority are doing well while smaller Decathlon USA closed almost all of it's stores...

Look for smaller, regional chains or stores surrounded by other retailers offering the same stuff for less...

Sears just cant really play wit discounters liek wal mart or target and there nothing really upscale like JC Penny Macys ect ect they have also had to close alot of stores in the past 5 years alone im not saying there going to go out right away but i say there just think thjere going to fall apart slowy from what i know kmart is doing well and as long as kmarts doing well sears is to but i just see many  simalers with them and montgoemry ward just that sears expanind in malls and wards dident

sears has more of a chance than wards, they have good name brands, updated logo, are in better malls than wards (Wards was in malls that have since been demolished and rebuilt into a big box plaza) and their stores are larger than montgomery ward. SEars has adatpted more. I have noticed Kmart doing good.

I suspect: TJ Maxx. Think about it. How many ads do you see for them? And usually there are no more than about 7 associates and 10 customers in the store! Oh, and A.J. Wright, too. My last nominee is: one of the discount dollar store chains. There must be at least 10 different ones!:exorcist::barf:

I have noticed Kmart doing good.

doset make sears any difrent its just a lager version of wards there ya go but not all stores are great and just because they have  anew logo dosent mean they wont go out and what about sEARS Essentials they dident do so well and idk why there tunringt hem into sears grand stores when most of the old kmart locations were small and they ddinet change much to the old kmart locations also outehr then do a paint job and swtched things aroudn inside

I realized that like I went into sears essentials in bethlehem pa on 9 am and I was the only customer in the store nad the ones I have been to in nashua, keene and londonderry did not seem to be do that well. how much different will Sears grand be? people were saying different store name, same store.

the only thing diffrent about a sears grand is t hat they sell food but how are u going to make it a grand store in such a small store

they can make a smaller format like said.

I also wnder if tower recorids is next since they filed and you can only file once every 7 yrs

and is suncoast next? lets think about which mall stores are next?

how many times has tower records been ni bankrupice any way and i dontt hink a smaller formatr would work for sears graran cause a sears grand is sopost to be huge not small

I hate to agree, but I think that either the days are numbered for both JC Penney and Sears.  While I love JC Penney, they just don't seem to offer anything new or different-but they are the only ones left in this area to offer size 5 shoes and they are one of the few left with a catalog which is nice to look through.  I guess the new wave will be for more stores to rely on their websites for orders.

I can't figure what is going on with Sears as the one in the mall down the street from us just looks junkier every day.  I used to love their "petite" clothes, but the variety and selection just gets nastier every time I go in the store.  (Where, or where, is a 5 foot person to go to find nicely made petite clothes if JC Penney goes now that the Petite Sophisticate chain is gone???????)

The only thing that remains true to Sears is their entire Craftsman and tool line which always seems to be the busiest section of the store!  Maybe they should just drop all the clothes and everything on the first floor and just handle home entertainment, vacuums, appliances and all the tool lines!
