Just a few more comments on the newer photos:

Latham - This location is unusual in that it had 3 completely separate stores in the plaza - the original is what is now the Marshalls, then they moved to the far left end (now Raymour & Flanigan) and then a couple years ago to where they are now - also the store directly to the left of the current PC was a Bradless then Ames.

Pittsfield - Their former location was in a plaza closer to the Rt 8 & 9 intersection - in this they were located next to a Kmart (another example of this co-location) - this plaza had (has) other stores also, but they are detached from the Kmart/Price Chopper building.

Saratoga - The plaza there had been Ames (as you mentioned) but was previously a Kmart (with auto center that operated even when it became Ames, though independent of the Ames) - the Kmart moved across town to become a Super K and was closed in one of the first batches of Kmart closings.

Lenox - Suprising that the Price Chopper didn't move while Ames was vacant - that store appeared larger (maybe it wasn't) and also would have been easier to add to (probably).

It seems that a price chopper would be right next to a k-mart

for lenox, maybe they felt the store was stil big enough. Sr weiner page said it is 33,000 square feet. the ames was about 60,,000 square fet and half of it is marshalls.

one in keene nh opens next month and will be 74,000 square feet. one that is 54,000 square feet will open in Derby Vermont (near newport) soon.

One in Springfield vermont closed a couple years ago it was in the same plaza as Shaws and was a small and rundown store.

There's a store in Lake George, NY that appears to be Price Chopper's kis sister, or something.  It resembles an old Price Chopper and is -very- tiny by today's supermarket standards.  I've shopped there before when I lived back east and visited the lake in the summer but, I never thought to take a pic.  I thought you guys would appreciate hearing about it, though.  Maybe someone in the area can find the store and snap a photo.  Anyone even remotely familar with Lake George Village would know where it is!

1988 saw the opening of a store in Wilkes Barre PA, another in East Greenbush, NY and a Mini Chopper in Lake George, NY.

Yup - that was a Mini Chopper.  They used to run some of those in small buildings (areas) where there wasn't space (or demand) for a larger store.  

The other one I know of was in Chatham - it was right in the main street and was a former A&P store from years ago (A&P left in the early 80's at the latest).  It had about 4 (maybe 5) aisles, pretty much all the grocery basics (meat, produce, dairy, bread, dry stuff) just in limited varieties/quantities.  The Mini Chopper was there until about 8-9 years ago when the company closed them all down (said they weren't cost effective) and still had the old orange digital screen registers without scanners!  After that it ws a locally run store for a short time (the owner and his relatives had stores in several area towns and had financial/legal troubles) and is now a dollar general (and not  the biggest one of those I've seen, either).

Price Chopper has since aquired the Grand Union in Chatham (which is still on the small side compared to some of their superstores).

Also of note in the small markets - Chatham also had a Finast at one time which is now a (smaller than the new ones) Eckerd.

Our Amherst, MA store opened in 1980, and in 1982 we entered the Scranton, PA marketplace with units in >>Dunmore<< and Oak Street.

Since this store opened (as a Price Chopper) in 1982, I wonder if it was something else (also in the aerial shot, you can see the "domed" roof, which I've not seen on any other Price Chopper store).

Shortly before his death in 1930, Lewis Golub merged his company with one owned by Joseph Grosberg so his sons Bernard (Ben) and William (Bill) would be part of a larger, stronger firm.

Two years later, Ben and Bill opened the area's first "one stop shopping" outlet in Green Island, New York. It was called the Public Service Market and introduced to this region the forerunner of the supermarket.

After selecting groceries, the shopper took them to one of the grocery checkers in a big square in the center of the store.

The bill was added on an adding machine and the tape then brought to a cashier. The shopper paid the cashier, had the tape stamped and took it back to the checker counter to claim the groceries. A $5 order was too big for one person to carry out alone!

The paragraph with >> << makes it sound kind of like an early version of a Super Center!

Hopefully this works - here goes!

Top Photo - Current East Greenbush Price Chopper - Built in 1988, since remodeled and expanded (original aisles were parallel to the front, now they run front to back - the part on the left where the white part stops was added on).

2nd & 3rd - Current stores at the former Mohawk Mall and in Rotterdam (Corner of Curry Road (Rt 7) and Altamont Avenue - both new buildings both within the last 5 years - the Rotterdam one had a store at this plaza that ran perpindicular to Altamont (this one faces Altamont).  Price Chopper also had a store in Mohawk many years ago that closed.

4th - Former Price Chopper (I think) next to old Jamesway on Curry Road - closed and empty since the 80's - see Jamesway post for more info & pix.

5th - Old Crosstown Plaza store - this was closed when the Mohawk Mall new store opened.  Currently Price Rite (Shop Rite version of an Aldi style store) - this is moving to the old Caldor/Ames spot Sunday (3/5).  Different style in that the left part of the windows (to 3rd column) is an Eckerd - the rest is the grocery store - all with one overhang roof!

6th - Watervliet Store - Older store in the city - fairly small  with several stores attached (former Eckerd next door, then the plaza makes a 90 degree turn and there are 4 or 5 small storefronts - it makes it a reverse L shaped plaza).  Interesting elevated sign tower.

7th - Old East Greenbush store - Next to Kmart on Routes 9&20 - was closed when current store (Photo #1) opened, empty for a while then became Big Lots as it is now.

I did this separately for a reason.  This may be an unusual set up in that Price Chopper has had three SEPARATE, DIFFERENT (not expansions/remodels) stores in the SAME PLAZA!

The first photo is the original location just to the left of the GEM?/BRADLEES/AMES/BONTON - now it is Marshalls (You can see a hint of the other building on the far right)

The second is the next location at the opposite (left) end of the plaza - this was one of (if not the) first stores that Price Chopper called a "SUPERSTORE" - it is now Raymour & Flanigan (after being several other short lived things)

The last photo is the current store on the right end of the plaza - newly built next to the BonTon a couple years (3 or 4 maybe?) ago.

The first photo is the old Price Chopper in Hudson (Greenport) on Route 9 - this is their 2nd store - the 1st one has been torn down and is an empty lot (see Jamesway for that shot).
The store went from the left end of the building to the corner toward the right of the shot - the portion under the Aaron's sign had doors at each end, the rest of the front wasn't enclosed (as it still isn't) - the part with the Aaron's sign held the Price Chopper sign, the rest of the roof was just slanted (the Cinema sign structure was added).

The second is the current Greenport store (across the street from the 1st photo) - that plaza is Price Chopper, Fashion Bug and WalMart - all built new.

The 3rd photo is the Catskill store - this was also newly built and has a small building off to the left of the shot with 3 or 4 small stores.

This is an older Price Chopper on Delaware Avenue between Madison & Morton in the city of Albany.'

As you can see, they are in the process of remodelling it and enlarging it a bit (about where you see the sliding door to the right is the new part).  Apparently they do a lot of business in returnable bottles, as the new bottle room (behind that sliding door) has at LEAST 8 machines (more than many of their "superstores")!

Years ago, there was also a gas station in the front of the parking lot (which would be just to the left of the bottom 1/2 of the shot) - they closed (or leased) all those a few years ago - just before most of the store chains started adding them.

First shot is the Glenmont store - newly built after demolishing a Grand Union & CVS that had been vacant for many years (they moved across the street (sort of).

2nd & 3rd shots are the plaza on Route 4 across from Hudson Valley Community College in Troy - 3rd is the current store (built about 3 years ago +/-) and the 4th is their previous store in the same plaza.  This plaza also has quite a few smaller stores, an Eckerd, freestanding Wendy's and used to have a Bradlees (in the 3rd photo, see the corner of the white building at the very left?  Imagine a building starting there and coming straight toward you (at a 90 degree angle) - that's where the Bradlees sat (it faced to the left of the photo, creating a U with the rest of the stores (See Diagram)

4th is the former store in the Troy Plaza on Hoosick St (Route 7) in Troy - it had a fire several years ago, was closed for a year or so, reopened (as Price Chopper) for a few months, closed again, sat closed for a few months again then finally opened as Midland Foods - they disappeared suddenly (all of them in the area) then was taken over by Save a Lot and Salvation Army (who had, and closed a store in a former GU up the street a mile and a half or so).

5th is a store on Route 4 in North Troy - it (and an Eckerd) are the only stores in the building.

6th & 7th are in Bennington, their former location (which is now a PART of the Home Deopt) and their current location in the plaza with the mini Wal*Mart.

The first shot is the Saugerties store on Route 32/212 from a ground level perspective.  A newly built store.

2nd is the store on Madison Avenue in Albany, this is an older smaller store like Delaware Ave - this one is also getting a bit of work (which you can't see under the awning) - looks less intesive than Del Ave though.

3rd, 4th and 5th are all on Western Ave in Guilderland.  The 3rd is a former GU that PC bought during the bankruptcy - they have since remodelled with the "mini tower" and blue roofing over part of the glass.
4th is their old store that they closed when they took over the GU - this store had been there a long time (had the fence so you couldn't take carts out at one point).  The sign frame is shown to the left.
5th is the store in 20 Mall (just above Western & 155).  This has been expanded/redone over the years as well (I think there may have been a smaller store where Eckerd is now) and has a small amount of parking UNDER the store at the far right.  No idea why they had the two store so close (#4 & #5 can't be more that a mile, mile & 1/2 apart) - at least they are better spaced now with #3 & #5.

#6 is the store in Westgate Plaza in Albany - a newly built store (after tearing down the former Woolworth, Wheels/Paper Cutter (which had been something else split into 2), and several smaller stores.  It sits a bit farther back than the old stores did.  They moved here from the Caldor plaza up the street.

#7 is the Lenox (MA) store on Rt 7/20 again.

#8 is the Pittsfield (MA) store on Route 8 - the left hand is the older store next tot the (former) KMart (the familiar arch design) and the right is the newer store down the street.

#9 is a former store in North Adams - the whole plaza is basically vacant - I don't know what else used to be in there (never saw it).

#10 is a second store in North Adams, this one on Route 2.  This isn't a huge store either - they kept this one - guess it was better located or something.
