the seldom-visited sears auto center.

Heres a remodeled former Jenns.

Jag67

It was a regional (Buffalo-Rochester area) Department store/clothes store that closed in 2001. They were more on the "upscale" side and kinda expensive, which is probably why they closed.

Whats is Jenns?

Jenss was a very old school department store originally started in Lockport, NY.  They later expanded through the northern areas of WNY and had locations in Niagara Falls (downtown), Tonawanda (they had a large store called Jenss BIG Twin-Ton or something like that right along the canal until the Boulevard Mall came around), Amherst (Boulevard Mall), Wheatfield (Summit Park Mall), and Clarence/Williamsville (Eastern Hills Mall).

Eventually, the locations were pared down to Boulevard, Eastern Hills, and Summit Park.  By 2001 when the department store business finally closed, only Boulevard was still in operation.  Jenss was definitley upscale and not for the bargain hunter.  But it was a true old-style dept. store experience to go in there.  Only at Jenss could you go in and get one-on-one service with a salesclerk who would help you out with the perfect Christmas gift for your girlfriend.  When they closed, it was truly the end of an era locally.  Even once AM&A's changed to The Bon-Ton, we still had the locally owned and operated Jenss.  Service, quality, and selection at Jenss was far superior from Lord & Taylor or Kaufmann's.   Unfortunately, it is nearly impossible for stores like this to maintain profits and still compete with chains like May Co. and Federated.

Jenss does still live on though and is still operated by the Dautch family (who helped develop and open the Boulevard Mall in the early 1960's).  Jenss, through a partnership with Niagara Falls based Reed's Jewelers (not the chain of Reed's down south), has been opening Reeds-Jenss Decor stores for a few years.  They have a store near in Amherst, Rochester, Erie, PA and Ohio.

In the tradition of their old department store, Jenss Decor offers high quality, and typically high priced merchandise, with incredible levels of service and assistance.

More Kaufmanns

I have to say, I love Kaufmann's, but I absolutely despise the Eastern Hills location.  I don't even care that it hasn't been remodeled since it was Hengerer's, but their selection, especially in the Men's department, is just horrible.  They have three times as much even at the McKinley store.  And I won't get into how sub-par it looks when compared to the selection at Boulevard (with the separate 40,000 sq. ft. Men's Store).

I know I know lol..I put that that there to compare the old (unremodeled) EH Jenns store to a remodeled one.

The EH Kaufmann's is in sorry shape. The inside is sooo dated. In fact, if you just threw some funky wallpaper on the walls, it would look just like it did when it opened!! It would be nice if it was remodeled. Same as for penneys..and the EH Penneys looks worse than Kaufmann's.

True but even the selection at that Kaufmann's is abysmal.  It would be amusing if Macy's just changes the name and leaves the inside the same.  That would be the FOURTH name on the wall at that store since the last time it was majorly renovated (read: when it was built).

That store is sort of historic though, so I hope Macy's remodels it and keeps it open...of the five Wm. Hengerer Co. stores that were open in 1981, it is the only location still in business.  The other three current Kaufmann's, and future Macy's stores, all opened during the Sibley's era (with the exception of the Men's Store at Blvd. and Home Store at McK).
