It looks as if the Walmart stores had shot themselves in the foot, efficiency-wise. I really hope their competition can learn from Walmart's mistakes. (Yes, I'm talking to you, Kmart, Meijer and Shopko!)

Very good topic Kmart4life. This proves that what I have put in past posts here on the forum is true. Wal*Mart does want 100% of the business here in America and worldwide given the fact that Wal*Mart is worldwide and it is the Wal*Mart consumer giving them the money to do this because the Wal*Mart consumer is who pays Wal*Mart the money for their products and services. This is why I refuse to shop there, because I do not want to give them my hard earned money for them to use to contribute trying to gain 100% percent of the marketplace as well as kill jobs.

Personally I can't stand Wal-Mart..especially at Christmas Time...we need to go to mom and pop stores...(even if it is more expensive!)
I go to my local IGA Stores and I love shopping at them for groceries. I've been shopping at my local IGA Stores almost my entire life except for July of 2001 through March of 2012. I tried giving my Giant Eagle Stores a try after they took over most of the IGA Stores in my area. They were nice at first, but went downhill quickly after just eight years. By April of 2012, I started going back to my local IGA Stores even if I do have to travel 15-20 miles just to go to one. That's why I agree with you completely JimSawhill. Shop at your locally family owned and operated stores. They offer better quality and customer service. Last, but not least at least family owned and operated stores put their customers first which is something Sam Walton's kids' have never done since taking over their father's Wal*Mart chain which is why I believe they are going downhill so quickly here all of a sudden. You reap what you sow and what Sam Walton's kids' have been sowing is finally what they are starting to reap.

Just saw a Walmart commercial and it's funny because they can't keep product on the shelves and now they are hyping their newest product line, Snapper Mowers.

Sam Walton must be rolling over in his grave... He wanted AMERICAN MADE PRODUCTS... in his old stores, he used to promote American made products, not Chinese JUNK!!

Yeah, I wonder what the "Everyday Low Price" those will be!

They will begin the expansion of the Newington, Connecticut store soon. They acquired The Basset Furniture Building adjacent to the store and will knock it down in order to expand the Newington store into a Supercenter. Basset is moving to a new plaza near Sam's Club and Stew's.

They were just waiting or Bassett to move and try finally did. That's going to be a nightmare over there since they are going to knock down the old Bassett building to add another 25,000 sf

Our local Walmart was getting the new logo put on two nights ago. When I stopped in after work, they were fastening the "W" of the new logo to the front of the building, and had put a new facade over the existing entrance, hiding the labelscar of the old "WAL*MART Always" sign that it used to have.

The grocery side has been opened up, in such that the ugly fake wall has been taken down, but it's just a shell at this point.

Our Walmart (Avon, OH) is coming along nicely. The food side is slowly transitioning into being operational. They're likely going to take out that one remaining freezer case from the old food section (which is now Shoes), since they started filling the new cases with product. The Dairy coolers are operational. The Bakery area is actually where the baked goods are. The "Food Entrance" is open, as is the rest of the parking lot AND the back entrance. All 26 register stations are up and running. The back restrooms (by the old Layaway counter) are closed off to the public "temporarily", but we'll see if they reopen.

All that's missing, besides the majority of the food and employees to run that side, is the full new interior sign package, and they'll be set. The planned opening is August 2nd, but it will likely open sooner than that.

I can confirm, the Walmart in Bennington, Vermont really is tiny.  Really tiny.  It seemed to be so much smaller than even the tiny Walmart in Berlin, VT.

The first Super Walmart in Vermont should be opening soon in St. Albans, and hopefully another soon in Derby.

Maybe soon it won't be quite so small - I knew that the voters in Bennington had approved several years ago to allow them to expand - apparently there were several appeals by other groups in the area, but I founf this story from May (2013) which looks like they are OK to go:

Yeah, I had to make sure I went before they expanded it.  ;)

Growing hostility to big box stores in tony Portland suburb might have been a factor

why?
The reasoning behind all this opposition to big box stores like Walmart in the suburbs is obvious. Walmart has been known to kill off smaller business in the past. I also think groups like Sprawl Busters are behind this hostility as well.

I guess the expansion of the Walmart store in Newington is not happening?

Wow. I bet Basset Furniture is pissed.

Ames Newington

Why would LoopNet post this if Walmart was supposed to take the Bassett building over? I hadn't heard any new developments with Walmart expanding, so maybe this is true. Nevertheless, Bassett has a nice new showroom down the Pike.

TRU7536

I wondered what happened? I haven't heard anything from the town of Newington regarding it.

As for Bassett, they are still in town and located in a new building/plaza that has become very popular now.

If you look at the Loopnet website, they state the building was built in 1990, lol... Which is incorrect.

According to the property owners, Vornando, it's still going to happen. Wal-Mart is expected to be over 178,000 SF.

They're finally going to remodel the Bristol, Connecticut Walmart after the first of the year. It was four years ago when Walmart began the remodel process in Connecticut. Not counting stores that are going to be converted to the Supercenter Concept I believe Bristol is the last store to get remodeled. The reason they waited so long to do the Bristol store is because they had a mini-remodel about 2 years before they began remodeling the other stores. Bye-bye Blue exterior, Hello Brown Exterior. Bye-Bye to the old Walmart logo with the  Star in-between the words Wal and Mart, Hello to the new logo with the Walmart Spark.
