Here comes the shitshow for the proposed East Patchogue location...now.

http://www.newsday.com/news/local/ny-liwalm1612552059mar16,0,7323815.story

*Yawn* Losers. Get a freaking job. Find a boyfriend (or girlfriend). Get a pet.

To be fair, it is in a pretty terrible location. It's at the intersection of a one-lane road that leads to a hospital (Hospital Road) and a highway that always chokes at that point (Sunrise Highway). Hospital Road and the two-way service road that would border Wal-Mart are both residential neighborhood roads.

The looming Walmart has also caused two stores (Shoprite and Walgreens) to scrap plans of building new stores in a nearby shopping center.

I would support Wal-Mart if they found a better location than where they're picking (there are a few abandoned sites available), but as of right now? No, not a good idea.

Given this information, it does seem like a logistics issue more than, say, an ideological one.

I know it's easy to slam people who 'protest' this sort of thing, as it were, but often there are legitimate and logical reasons for their doing so. And of course, on the other side of the coin there are people that immediately hear the name "Wal-Mart" and start foaming at the mouth and brandishing figurative torches and pitchforks (or perhaps real ones, even) simply because of who the retailer is and what they believe they represent, which, IMO, is kind of silly (as I believe I mentioned earlier in this thread, or perhaps another one related to Wal-Mart, I personally think the best way to express one's dislike for a retailer is simply to not spend one's money there). Nevertheless, it's easy to therefore overlook the people that have concerns about it for realistic and legitimate reasons, such as possible traffic or zoning issues, or, even (though I know a lot of people like to scoff at such things), environmental ones. Certainly there are enough empty big-box corpses floating around that a retailer like Wal-Mart could refurb or expand one of those versus simply producing new construction. I'm currently seeing it right now in my home city. There's often really no need to build on a brand-new site. Sometimes there is, but I suspect this is the exception rather than the norm.

I'm not defending Wal-Mart protesters per se. I have never been one myself, though I was personally against their building a new Supercenter in here primarily because I really did not feel that it was necessary, and that they could easily have occupied, for example, the now-vacant Home Depot building that was abandoned when they decided to build a bigger building (and I was against that as well, as I also felt it to be unnecessary). However, I also don't think it is right to immediately dismiss people who do protest the construction of new big box stores, regardless of which store it is, as "losers" and so forth. It's best, I think, to examine peoples' motives and learn more about why they feel the way they do before pigeonholing them in such a disparaging way.

This is exactly the situation in the area here. There's half an outlet center a mile away they could use, and a site of a former movie theater a few miles away on the LIE, across the road from Sam's Club.

But from what I hear, they don't want to cannibalize their business by putting Wal-Mart near Sams Club (although that Sams Club is actually next to a Target, lol). They also want to lease undeveloped land to tap into public funds. That way, they get their money and their tax breaks, and when that store no longer becomes useful, they desert it for greener pastures - though that's not really a smart idea on Long Island, where land is EXPENSIVE.

Heres a picture from my cell phone of the Walmart at Franklin Mills Mall (just got a new sign last month) also the letters are a royal blue (I know they appear whitest since its at night and the light shows up much brighter on the cell phone pic)

This store was built as a CARREFOUR.

Southington, CT Remodel Update:

Remodel Begins July 09

Food Dept will move to where the Toy Dept is currently located. Food Dept. will be comparable in size to the new Target.

Electronics Dept will move to where the Infants Dept is currently located.

The Vision Center will move to where the Men's Dept is currently located (next to Subway, which is not scheduled for a remodel. If they want a remodel they have to pay for it themselves).

The Toy Dept will supposedly move to where the Vision center is currently located.

The Craft Dept will supposedly be down-sized and we will no longer be selling fabric.

No word yet on where the Men's and Infants Dept will be moved to.

The Newington Wal Mart just got new carts this week. Was surprised to see them all today. They are SO much better than the old ones. They are all metal with a blue stripe across the handle and it has the nice new logo on it and the "protective crash guards" as I call them along the sides of the cart are blue too. The one negative thing about them is that they are a bit smaller than the old ones. It's hard to fit bigger items in the cart now as well as on the bottom. They even got new blue hand baskets with the new logo.

Any news on any other CT Wal Mart remodels?

As we all know, Wal-Mart has phased out "Smiley". Not long ago, they wanted to trademark the smiley face. Well I was at Sears, and I saw a Joe Boxer display, with Wal-Mart-like smiley faces. So here I am at Sears, looking at a Kmart product line, with a symbol of Wal-Mart?

Looks like a nice walmart, with crappy carts. lol

The Walmart in Wethersfield,CT near the Silas Deane Highway (near the big Dakota sign with the surprising still existing Ames sign underneath.) has the new logo. I saw it while we were heading home from Red Lobster on my birthday. It looks nice.

Hate to be a nag, but the Wal Mart off the Silas Deane is actually in Rocky Hill CT. It was the old Caldor and is steps away from the former Rocky Hill Ames. Nice to know that it has the new logo.

Went to the Walmart on Farmington Ave in New Britain with Rodent on Tuesday. Worst Walmart I ever been too. Small, cramped, and outdated. Anyway I heard they're getting a remodel later this year too.

Marc82

Okay. From what I hear, the following CT Walmarts (in no particular order) will be remodeled in 09.

Queen Street Southington

Berlin Turnpike Newington

SuperCenter Wallingford

Farmington Ave New Britain

The worst Wal-Mart on Long Island that I've been to is Riverhead, although the consensus is that the worst in all of LI is Valley Stream (where the employee got trampled to death).

Marc82

We're not doing much better in Southington. Yesterday an elderly woman ran over an employee who was walking back to the store from the parking lot after her break.

AmesNewington

According to a Monthly Report from the Town Manager of Newington CT, apparently the Newington Wal Mart on the Berlin Turnpike is going to get a remodel. Wal Mart supposedly applied for a permit to conduct a "general remodel" of the store, whatever that means.

The clothes and shoes area is quite new from a slight upgrade in 2006, but the rest of the store needs a facelift. They need new registers too. Hopefully they will get the things they need.

Well, it should look nicer, and if it's like the walmrt they renovated at franklin mills here in philly, there will be more blue stuff inside.

hehe  the walmart i go to in oxford ma has been appoved to become a super walmart. to become one they will have to remove  a   stone wall next the store  add an addtional 30 tousand square feet to the bulding and tare dow  ther gas station wich ther in the prograss off

AmesNewington

Went to the Newington Wal Mart and within a week since I was last there, they tore up the store. They repainted sections of the store light blue (it makes the store look brighter) and it looks to me like the store will be overhauled completely. It looks as if the Pharmacy will be moved to the checkout area. Right now, there is just no rhyme or reason to the store at all. I really don't even recognize the store anymore.

There's signs on the doors saying that the store will have a Grand Re-Opening on/around July 8, 2009. So, they will probably work fiercely every night until then to complete it. I can't wait. For one, the store was in bad shape in areas from so much traffic and secondly, I was getting tired of the layout. It was a maze and I hope they can change things for the better.

Coincidentally, their grand re-opening will likely coincide with the Grand Opening of Sam's Club down the road in Newington. As far as Sam's is concerned, there are signs indicating the gas station portion of the store will open in a few weeks.

Marc82

July is gonna be here soon. I'm not looking forward to working in the middle of a construction site. *Groan*

The North Attleborough Wal-Mart is being converted into one of those gigantic Super Wal-marts. It is weird because the store is open but has chunks taken out of it and all the stock shuffled around. This Wal Mart even pre conversion remains rather skanky, which surprises me because it is not like it is one of those nasty inner city ones. Also the Sam's Club in Seekonk is also having some sort of construction going on, are those being "biggie sized" as well?

I just heard today from a friend of mine that the old Wal-Mart on Rt. 37 across from the mall in Massena NY is no more.  He told me that when he and his wife drove by yesterday morning, they were tearing down the roof.  When they went by later that day, the entire building was gone, with just a concrete slab left.

As for the Ogdensburg (NY) Wal-Mart, a friend of mine that works there tells me that the SuperCenter idea on Rt. 68 is dead.  The company is now planning to add onto the existing store on Ford Street and rearrange the departments (yet again).

wwefan101

our walmart in oxford ma wont becomea super center until next year this year they spent a lot of money tareing down a gas station and makeing it in to an addtionall  50  to 100 parking spots  wich they need

momof3

Went to the Newington ct walmart today and saw firsthand the remodel.
I fist want to say that even though I live in newington CT I always shopped other Walmarts, I found ours to be cramped and messy.
I get the impression that they are working hard to compete with the soon to be open Sams club Like Ames Newington said.  The remodeled areas were very neat and the registers were much more efficent.  The pharmacy was in the front of the store and the isles certainly were different.  I am going to go out on a limb and say I may really like this store if it continues this way.-

Hi momof3:

Let's face it, the Newington Wal Mart needed this remodel. The original set up of the store didn't fit well with the traffic patterns rotating throughout the day in the store. The aisles were TOO SMALL and after 8 years, were unkept and dirty. I love witnessing the transformation every week. The remodeling crew works awful hard day in and day out. In certain areas of the store, I stand there and think twice if I'm actually in the same Wal Mart. Unlike their little remodel of the clothing area in 2006, they are just about moving/shifting every department to a new location. They even moved the opening to the restroom area farther down to where the layaway/Site to Store area is. I couldn't tell you where everything used to be.

I do kind of like the Electronics where the Men's department was right when you walk down the aisle from the entrance. You automatically see the TV's going in the back of the store now. I also like the sleek new display for the cell phones.

I do think by July, the Newington store will be ready and ready to compete with Sam's.

Walmart already owns Sam's Club since both were started by Sam Walton, hence the names for his stores.

I went to my Wal-Mart which was just remodeled a little while ago, and it is so dark in there! I don't know if it is the chinese light bulbs or what, but it is awful. The Kmart and Targer are 5x brighter. (This Wal-mart doesn't have the warehouse style ceiling):o

WOW THATS A FIRST A WAL MART WITH NO WAREHOUSE CEILING!:holysh::o

Sorry this is an old post, but only the newer Wal-Marts have warehouse ceilings (excluding Sam's Club)... how could you not know that?!! I was shocked when I discovered one WITH a warehouse ceiling!
