I was just saying that Wal-Mart isn't full of nothing but cheap crap. Some of their products, like the Mainstays lamps, are actually pretty good quality and last for a good handful of years. That's ALL I'm trying to say. I think Kmart/Target are just as good and I do shop there. Sorry if I offended anyone with my opinion because I can see that a lot of people are opposed to it.

Will everyone stop hounding me for my opinion and please stop giving me 10 thousand reasons why I'm wrong. Let's get back on topic. Thank you.

Looks like you stirred up a hornet's nest there my friend. Don't show any fear. They'll give up in time. I shop Wal-Mart all the time, got a great deal on some smoke detectors as well as ice melt.

No offense taken here, if it's any consolation to you...

I don't care for Walmart as a whole, so I get just slightly agitated when I sense someone putting forth the notion that it's the be-all and end-all, and when people say they refuse to shop elsewhere. Of course it's their choice... what can you do?

1. Walmart is a business not a living thing.
2. Walmart has done an excellent job in promotion themselves as the price leader with good quality.
3. Walmart is the largest retailer in the world thus can dictate a wholesale price for their lines from their suppliers. Suppliers can choose not to sell to them, some have refused in the past.
4. Walmart has "replaced" many smaller retailers, as those retailers replaced those who came before them, it is a cycle.
5. Walmart is in the business of making a profit from volumn sales not quality of products.
6. Walmart did turn its' back on the Buy American campaign but did so to remain competitive with other reatailer who had shed their suppliers in this country when it served the bottom line. (Shame on all of them but that's another thread)
7. Walmart has a poor history of labor relations but so do many non union and union companies.
8. Walmart has cultivated the market place because it is not only smart in its product lines but in creating the illusion of great value for the asking price. Their current buying power is proof  on most items.
9. Walmart recognized that moving gradually into the urban areas would stimulate company growth. Yes their growth was large, rapid but it was measured and sustainable.
10 Walmart carries the majority of goods that Americans want to purchase or they would not be a success.
11 I am 53 years old or young but do miss the Wooolworths, the counter, the grilled cheese and fountain Cokes my grandmother would buy me as a child. But the emotional attachment is to my sainted grandmother not the store. The store was the physical location of those fond memories.
12 I am positive that in the future Walmart will fall victim to the next big thing in retailing, which I predict will be online shopping that delivers to your door step everything you might need.

Great post. Probably one of the most objective offerings I've seen from anyone on the topic of Walmart, EVER. *applauds* :)

With that said, I, personally, am not a fan of Walmart, and avoid shopping there as a general rule, but at the same time I think a lot of folks waste a bit too much energy hating it. I don't like it -- for a variety of reasons -- so I don't spend my money there. Statement made. Done.

Worth noting, though, was, as someone pointed out a few posts back, Walmart's prices are not always the cheapest. They are on some of their products, sure, but those are the ones to get you in the door, and they jack up the prices on other things to make up for that. It's a standard procedure and everyone does it, not just Walmart, but I did want to emphasize that statement that was made earlier, as it it correct. It depends on what you're buying, though, I suppose...caveat emptor, or whatever, at any rate. ;)

Layoffs Hitting Bentonville. Over 800 Walmart employees from their corporate office in Bentonville, Arkansas will be losing their jobs. Meanwhile the company plans on hiring more than 1000 workers for their stores and clubs nationwide.

I liked my Walmart before it became a SuperCenter, it kinda made things a little complicated.

To my surprise there are still Regular Walmarts in Norwich & Groton, you'd think they'd be supercenters by now.

I doubt that online shopping will will replace regular shopping. I would like to see what I'm purchasing up close before buying it.

I dislike wal-mart just as much as the next guy, but you have to admit, somehow we end up there every once in a while. But did anyone notice the theme change? At my Wal-mart it is now back the the tan and brown like in the early 90's, the interior is redisigned with sections slightly moved around, and new wood stlye floors here and there. Doesn't really even feel like WM, but they can't try to hid under their new image, I still don't like em.

I know this is an old post.

This sounds a lot like the Safeway "lifestyle" remodeling program which was first launched in 2005.

There are tons of old Walmart carts behind the Walmart in Keene, NH (as well as a Brooks cart)
This cart was different than all of the others back there

Now I'm hearing July is when renovations will start at my Southington, CT store. So far all I can confirm is the FOODS section will move to the back of the store where the TOY DEPT is located currently and it will be much larger than the existing FOODS section.
