BOARDMAN, OHIO. Taken March 17, 2008.

The store was kind of old inside -- had yellow stripes on the walls, no ticket slips for video games like Clay and Horseheads. I didn't take any indoor shots.

A vacant Kids "R" Us. I saw in Dan's pictures it was recently used by Petco -- apparently it was short-lived. I wonder if Babies 'R' Us will move in soon?

It had the old school pastel sign. I love these old brown signs.

I took many more of Boardman, I will post them up soon. Here's the vacant one in Columbus on Broad St. Broad St. is a very distressed area. I almost fainted when I found out there's a dead mall across the street, a vacant Kmart, a vacant Child World/Media Play AND A YORK STAKE HOUSE STILL IN BUSINESS NEXT DOOR!

Took these on March 17, 2008. The weather was lousy in Columbus for my stay.

nah there is a BAbies r us down the road. there are no Brown Toys r us' in Columbus.

COLUMBUS, OHIO / vacant one on Broad St.

It had the old-school pastel sign all the way up until its end. This one closed in early 2006. My girlfriend's roommate says this area is a ghetto and the locals often refer to it was "little Tijuana."

Facade is heavily damaged -- probably due a hurricane that hit Columbus a few years ago. It's now been vacant for two years. The Kids 'R' Us next door was recently occupied by a junk furniture store.

SAINT CLAIRSVILLE, OHIO. Taken yesterday.

Thanks to Dan finding this one. I decided to take this way on my way home from Columbus. It ended up costing me about $15 in tolls ($8.75 for I-78, $4.50 for the Tappan Zee)! Oh well... I was joyed when I saw this one coming off the highway.

No Jeoffrey again but an old pastel sign! I wonder when it was repainted?

Weird pick-up area with typical old doors. I've never seen a pick-up sign like this one (usually the older ones are orange).

I wanted to take pictures inside the store but the staff usually watches closely -- it had blue and yellow stripes on the walls and old multicolored checkout signs. They were all across the ceiling, expanded into the R Zone where there were no counters.

No ticket slips, or Exit Only sign, just like Boardman.

SAINT CLAIRSVILLE, OHIO. Taken yesterday.

Old-school pastel sign. This store was oddly built on an uneven parking lot, near a hill. It reminded me of the Waterford, CT one. I went up the hill to get some great "aerial" shots.

COLUMBUS, OH / Morse Road, taken 3-19-2008.

This store had a long hallway to the entrance and warned patrons not to bring firearms inside the store!

It was raining hard only to snow later on. It was sunny the next day! Very unpredictable weather I say!

Are you freaking kidding me? That's the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. Is crime in that area really that bad?

Columbus never struck me as an area marred by crime but I do know the city has a problem with illegal aliens. People in the area seem very regular, laid back middle American/caucasians. West Broad St. (where the vacant mall, vacant TRU is) is known as a distressed area with many retail places having pulled out, moving to other parts of the city. I was all around the city, all I can say for W. Broad's ordeal is that the city itself is heavily overmalled with shopping centers almost everywhere. Living in Connecticut, I'd say I would still shop around here rather than most of Waterbury and especially Bridgeport and New Haven where I will not go.

Yonkers, NY opened in 1978. There's an old commercial on YouTube that claims "now open in Yonkers" and is dated 1978.

I think Carle Place also opened around this time -- that was another 70's store and probably one of the first of Long Island. The last brown one on L.I. was in Stony Brook near Smith Haven Mall, it's been remodeled since.

Here's a small list of Toys "R" Us stores in California by...

1970

Van Nuys (Sherman Way)
Torrance (Hawthorne Blvd.)
Covina (Azusa Ave.)
Anaheim (South Harbor Blvd.) -- possibly still vacant
Ontario (North Mountain Ave.)

1972

Sunnyvale (East El Camino Real)
Pleasant Hill (Contra Costa Blvd.)
Serramonte-Colma (Serramonte Blvd.)
Hayward (Hesperian Blvd.)
Almaden-San Jose (Blossom Hill Rd.)
Arden Fair-Sacramento (Arden Fair/Mall)

I have looked them all up on Live Maps and all of them have been remodeled extensively. Notice how these early 70's stores have stripes/lines on the building.

Sunnyvale used to have a very old Jeoffrey sign left on the store up until the early 2000s. Here's what it looked like in its last years before a huge remodel.

TALLAHASSEE, FLORIDA!

WOW! It's an oldie, still has the stripes! It's the only store in the area for many miles. This one must've opened in 1986.

GAINESVILLE, FL

ANOTHER OLD ONE! This one looks very oddly placed.

The town assessor says it was built in 1978. Looks like it's been remodeled maybe 10 years later? I might be seeing this one in August!

Boise, Idaho.

An oldie, seemingly repainted roof but still has the rainbow stripes. Idaho is a lame duck market for Toys R Us, there's only two in the state! I'm guessing 1989 for year built.

I was right, according to the assessor (http://www.adaweb.net/body.asp?SN=Assessor&url=http%3A//www.adacountyassessor.org/propsys) it was built in 1989. Was probably repainted or remodeled after or around 2000.

Here's a ground level shot.

Not all towns have detailed online assessor databases/property search databases and some do not feature online access. The easiest way to find out is to enter the town name in a search engine, and type "town property assessor search" and you may come up with results.

Dan, I heard you just came back from another trip! I hope you saw the York, PA store and hope it was not repainted.

ROANOKE, VA.

It was been repainted to blue since. It was built in 1987, according to the town assessor. I asked a fellow mall blogger of mine who lives in the Roanoke area to get me some 2008-current photos.

Picture is from the town assessor website.

Here's my recent shot of the Woburn, Mass. store. Dan visited late 2006 to find it was repainted. Taken today 3-30-2008.

The Exit Only sign has been removed! I still love this store!
