What store was previously in the Hyde Park, NY Stop & Shop building?

That would have been a ShopRite - they built it new to replace an older store across Route 9, in the plaza with the (still empty) Ames.

This was not too long before Big V (the then-owner of the ShopRites in most of NY outside the city area) went into bankruptcy, and they closed several stores in that area, but the others were all older (Quonset style) buildings, which were probably expensive to maintain, being as old as they were.

It seemed kind of odd that they closed this store, being both fairly new, lacking much competition (the only other store in Hyde Park at the time was a small Grand Union, though the Poughkeepsie stores are not far), and also the fact of being the closest store to at least one, if not two, colleges.

[Update. I went to the Pine Street S&S today and they were taking the sign off the building. It was really neat how they had all the letters piled on the ground. The Stop & Shop banner was hanging above where the sign used to be. Apparently they also plan on remodeling this 15 year old store as there was a guy walking around with rolled out blue prints with the Stop & Shop logo on them. I don't know if they ever remodeled this store aside from adding the Dunkin Donuts about 8 or 9 years ago.

Update #2: I went there tonight to pick up a few things and also noticed the other signs are off the building as well. The ones that say Fish Market, Peoples Bank, etc. Also I gassed up my car there for $2.39/gallon. Not bad considering the going price in that area is $2.69/gallon.

They took the sign off the 5 1/2 year old Farmington Avenue  Bristol Stop & Shop today. The store was built where Bradlees once stood. S&S was originally at the other end of the plaza, which is now a 1 year old TJ Maxx and a vacant store. The TJ MAXX relocated from the old D&L last September. That spot is now a 1 year old Job Lot. (The had moved from the old Stop & Shop).

I have a picture of The Forestville Stop & Shop with its new sign lit up in the dark from last night. I will post it as soon as I can find my the wire to connect my camera.

Also The Farmington Avenue Stop & Shop in Bristol bought the abandoned gas station adjacent to the Ocean State Job Lot store and will begin selling Stop & Shop gas there soon.

The new logo on the 14 or 15 year old Stop & Shop located in The Forestville Commons in the Forestville section of Bristol,  Connecticut - 747 Pine Street. Picture taken by me on 11/12/09. It looks really nice all lit up. Sorry it's a little blury the batteries in my camera were dying.

Marc82

The Gas Station at the Forestville Stop & Shop. Again sorry about the blurrieness.

AmesNewington

The Newington S&S still doesn't have the new logo. Maybe they will make their way to this area soon.

None of the stores in the Poughkeepsie area have the new logo yet either.

Keeping with that particular area, neither does the relatively new one on the corner of Farmington Ave and Lower Lane in Berlin.

Update: Yet another S&S with the new logo. I went by the S&S in New Britain at the West Main Street/Corbin Avenue intersection and they had the new logo on their building. We're getting closer!

My uncle works at a Stop and Shop either in Dartmouth or New Bedford Mass. I can't remember... anyway here's what the new outfits look like as well as a rather awesome cake he custom did for my cousin :)

Here is the listing of all the Stop & Shop locations in 1986, from an old Stop & Shop New England Map.  I thought you would be interested.

Marc82

Very cool. The one in Bristol, CT became a Super Stop & Shop in the early 90s.

Marc82

The 5 1/2 year old store on Farmington Ave in Bristol now sports the new logo. :-)

The one in Simsbury, at that time, was still attached to the Farmington Valley Mall. Was torn down and rebuilt about 150 feet further back as a Super around 1992.

I'm surprised they had a location in NY at that point. I know they had tried and failed an expansion in NY and NJ in the '70s, but they didn't really try again until the mid '90s, at which point Ahold bought them and converted the proposed S&S's to Edwards (only to reconvert them a few years later).

I can't figure out where that address is - the current Poughkeepsie store is 2540 South Road, the Price Chopper (across the street) is 2585, the CVS (opposite side, just a bit south) is 2503 and the Shop Rite (in what was the South Hills Mall) is 1895 - so 483 would be quite a bit farther South than that.

However, Staples (which is just South of the South Hills Mall), is listed as 1849 South Road, Wappingers Falls.

Unless there was a change in the number system at some point?

This one is another one still sporting the old school logo. Scot Haney from Channel 3 was there this morning collecting turkeys for Food Share.

I remember seeing that store more than 20 years ago.  It was an old store next to Bradlees.  Does anyone remember whether the new South Road store replaced the Bradlees store?  Maybe the street numbers had changed.

Hamden, CT 's Stop & Shop at 1245 Dixwell Avenue will have its grand re-opening on December 11.  This store, which opened in 1989 had the honor of being next to an Ames for a few years.

The switch from the red and green to purple is quite drastic.

The S&S in Clifton, NJ was torn down for a new store. Oddly enough the new store is not a Super S&S. The old one was a former Grand Union and Penn Fruit before that. Apparently, the first Linens 'N Things was in this small shopping center. In pictures: http://acmestyleblog.blogspot.com/2009/12/update-to-former-acme-style-bonus-store.html

Marc82

There's no such thing as Super Stop & Shop any more. That name was phased out when they began phasing in the new logo.

Anyway the store in rural Granby, CT still sports the old logo as of 12/24/09.

Does Stop & Shop have any stores in South Jersey?

They did for about one year, 2005-2006? They were formerly Super G locations. The one in Sicklerville, NJ is now a Shop Rite, and the one in Rio Grande, NJ is still vacant.

I ask because I think there might have been one next to the Bradlees across from Shore Mall.

That was lastly a Ross clothing store, but I don't know what it was originally. Where did you hear that?

Right next to the Bradlees? I just assumed. That might not have been an original Bradlees. Maybe Stop & Shop pulled out of the area when Bradlees closed.

Stop & Shop on North Main Street in Southington has shut down the in-store Dunkin Donuts permanently. I don't shop there regularly, but I know it had to have closed fairly recently because my mom was at the store before Christmas and it was still open. The store is now offering fresh hot coffee free of chage for it's customers until 4PM.
