Most of the names above don't mean much, at least to me.

I live where they run Strawbridge's (they only have about 20-some stores), and the only kind of people it attracts is the old grandma type.

Strabridge's (a.k.a. Strawbridge And Clother before 1997) was once a full scale department store, but now is pretty much nothing except women's clothes, a mens department, and home stuff.

I also don't like May, because instead of buying the very successful discount chain-"Clover" (was owned by whomever owned Strawbridge and Clothier at the time), they let it go out of business.--This is a chain that would have given Target a run for it's money if it was still around.

Actually, the May Comapny stores that will be bought by Federated, would ethier be changed to Macy's, Bloomingdale's, or Burdines. Also, Lord and Taylor is closing most, if not all stores.

Wouldn't it make more sense to keep the stores open and rename only a FEW of the stores so people don't get confused?

Sheesh if you decide to rename the majority of the stores then you have to buy new signs,change the logo,replace all the stuff with the former name,get new bags,completely renovate the store etc. etc.

Marshall Field's and Lord & Taylor are more established names throughout the country and not just regional names.

This outrage is somewhat amusing.  When May Co. was out buying up stores all over the country and renaming them...they were doing exactly what Federated will do now.  This is not a new thing.  In Buffalo, Associated Dry Goods (ADG) in 1959 closed J.N. Adam's because they also owned The William Hengerer Co.  Then in 1981, ADG merged the Hengerer's operations with Sibley's in Rochester.  When May purchased ADG in 1986/87, they kept the Sibley's name for about 3 years and then merged the entire chain into Kaufmann's from Pittsburgh.  Two years ago, May shut down the corporate offices in Pittsburgh and merged Kaufmann's into Filene's.  The only difference is the name on the outside of the stores.  Heck, when you use your Visa card at Kaufmann's, the charge comes from Filene's.  

My point it, this is not a new phenomenon.  The major chains have been doing this for decades.  In the long run, it's much easier and much cheaper for Federated to operate under Macy's, Bloomingdale's, Marshall Fields, and maybe, Lord & Taylor versus twenty different brand names.   I don't agree with it, and I miss the local flavor, but it's the way retailers work.  Besides, for years, there has been no difference between a Kaufmann's, Filene's, Hecht's, etc...  They're virtually all the same stores with the same inventory.

I could be wrong, but I think one of the retail sites states that the "Mays" on the door push plate posted on  this board is for another unrelated Mays Department Store rather than the St. Louis based "The May Company".  Generally, The May Company has emphasized just "May".
I'll do some research and report back.
