I wonder if FD are building stand alone stores in East Hartford? I think FD East Hartford stores  are in shopping centers on Main Street and at School Street Square...

Family Dollar in downtown Southington has rebranded as Dollar Tree. My Mom says the Family Dollar sign is still up, but there is a banner that says "Dollar Tree Grand Opening". And Dollar Tree's website now lists 200 Main Street Southington as a store location. This is Dollar Tree's second location in Southington.

It will be interesting to see what happens with the Berlin Family Dollar. There are hardly ever any customers in the store. They should turn that one in to a Dollar Tree or move FD to Farmington Ave. Plenty of possibilities.

They did the same (other than that the store sign has been changed) to the Family Dollar in Rensselaer (NY).
This store was a fairly recently opened one (maybe 2 years) in part of an old Grossman's (and for those who know the area next to what used to be the Joy store).
It is also the only store of this type within city limits (there are a Rite Aid and Aldi as well), which makes it seem like the Family Dollar model would have fit better (as many folks could access that that may have less access to a Walmart or similar store) with it's more variety than a Dollar Tree.

Also that there are two other Dollar Tree stores outside the city in a reasonably close proximity, but no other Family Dollar in the area anywhere.

This actually survived the Michael Brown Riots as a Family Dollar. I saw it on the ABC News. Some of the strip malls surrounding it, however, were victims of looting.

Family Dollar's replacement store on East Main Street in Meriden, CT has opened. It replaces the one in the dying Lowe's Plaza. Lowe's remains empty too.

From MYRECORDJOOURNAL.COM

Family Dollar opens on Meriden’s east side

MERIDEN â€" A new Family Dollar store opened on East Main Street this week.

The store was previously located in the former Lowe’s plaza, but closed so that a 9,000-square-foot standalone building could be constructed at 1324 E. Main St. Kevin Curry and Kevin Danby own the 57,000-square-foot property.

“They want more visibility,” Curry told the Record-Journal in July 2015 when the new Family Dollar was proposed. “When going into existing space, you’re trying out a market. Now that they’ve been in there and know what their sales are, they know if they go into a standalone location they could see an increase in business.”

The standalone store opened for business on Wednesday. While the store is new, plenty of customers were coming and going on opening day.

Curry and Danby considered other uses for the property before Family Dollar. About four years ago, they received site plan approval to build a 13,000-square-foot Hunter’s Ambulance Service facility. But several months later the ambulance service backed out of the move for financial reasons.

There are two other Family Dollar locations in Meriden , at 311 W. Main St. and 560 W. Main St.

In 2013, a developer submitted plans for a Family Dollar store at the northwest corner of East Main and Broad streets. The state Department of Transportation rejected the plan because of traffic concerns.

Economic Development Director Juliet Burdelski has previously called the standalone Family Dollar on East Main Street a “good fit” for the area. Several other developments are underway on the city’s east side, including a new restaurant operated by the owners of Taino Smokehouse in Middletown.

Family Dollar closing six stores in Wisconsin

by FOX 11 News

Quote(WLUK) -- Six Family Dollar stores will be closing throughout the state, including one in Northeast Wisconsin.

The Family Dollar store location on Northland Avenue in Appleton is scheduled to close.

Other stores to close are:

3048 E. Layton Ave., St. Francis
2621 N. Clairemont Ave., Eau Claire
627 W. Historic Mitchell St., Milwaukee
    4412 W. Capitol Dr., Milwaukee
    4130 S. Howell Ave., Milwaukee

All six store locations are set to close on or around June 30.

The Department of Workforce Development says approximately 50 employees will be affected.

Dollar Tree will be opening in the same plaza that Family Dollar is located in Berlin, CT. There has been no indication that Family Dollar will close. I'm assuming since both stores are now the same company, both wouldn't operate in the same complex.

Family Dollar is building a brand new store in Philadelphia, PA.  It is located on Kensington Avenue, across from the former PRT/PTC Kensington Shops, on the site of the former Kent Theatre.

We have a family dollar in a old 70's plaza, with a Ocean State Job Lot and a BJ's, and a independent Family Dollar built earlier this year just east of the Frog Bridge. (In Willimantic)

The Seaford, DE store was destroyed this week by arson. The rumor mill says this kid was soaking cotton balls in nail polish remover and setting them on fire in the store. Hard to believe a Family Dollar could be worth $3m  :-)

I suppose (if it was badly damaged, as the story seems to suggest), by the time you add in the costs to remove what's left after the fire and build a whole new building, you could get to $3 Million for all the costs, not just for the stuff that was in it.

If you drive through Charlotte at certain times of the day you are quite literally
navigating a convoy of Family Dollar trucks out to make deliveries.

The Matthews distribution center isn't closing, which should cushion the blow somewhat.

200 jobs will be eliminated, and 700 relocated. Obviously those jobs won't be in Matthews anymore, and a number of employees will elect not to relocate to Chesapeake. In fact, I'm reasonably certain DT is counting on a certain number of people from Matthews not relocating.

Keeping two headquarters functioning, with duplications of functions and cost, does not make business sense.  When I was with Ames we bought Zayre.  We had tried keeping both Ames and Zayre office facilities up and running to avoid the negative blowback about cutting jobs.  It didn't work.  It just made things more complicated at store level (we had to sort mail to figure out what got sent where), added expense, and ultimately hastened the demise of the company.

You are absolutely right about that. When one company is bought out by another company the first order of business that needs to be done quickly after the sale is fully completed is to consolidate the headquarters of both companies into one as quickly (But it needs to be a real thorough process) as possible even though they will be some negative blowback regarding the jobs that could be lost.

So lets start saying what locations we think should be on the list...

Ill start.. Ours in Portland IN is very trashy and you barely have enough room to walk around inside with displays on top of each other and very poor service.. It should close, be torn down and rebuilt, or turned into dollar tree which would be nice for our community

TheFugitive

Oddly enough they just opened a brand new Family Dollar store in Pittsburgh's Carrick neighborhood.  It was new construction too.  Odd they would spring for that if they were
about to start downsizing.

They had a really crappy store a couple of miles away on Warrington Avenue.
That closed, but it has now been taken over by Dollar General.

In my area, there are two Family Dollars in Newington and Berlin, CT. The Newington one is on the New Britain town line (Family Dollar has 2 locations I believe in NB and they are newer, nicer and larger). This one is small, old and rundown. The plaza is the same. However, I believe a Dollar General or new standalone FD would be great there as the area doesn't have much for the neighborhood which is very walkable. As for Berlin, this one stumps me. Family Dollar has been in the Webster Square plaza for nearly 20 years. In October, 2017, Dollar Tree opened and took the remaining space of Job Lot/old Foodmart at the other end of the plaza and FD did not close. This FD is similar to Newington. It's old and rundown. It's rarely busy, especially with DT across the plaza. In fact, I never see many customers in and out of there at all at times. However, it's still used by many as there is only one full service grocery store in town and 2 CVS stores and a Walgreens for everyday needs (and they are not cheap). I believe a relocated FD or new Dollar General on Farmington Ave would work with the same employees especially with the new development by the train station. Of course Berlin could use another grocery store too.

There is a Family Dollar in Philly that opened a couple of years ago on the site of the Kent Theatre, across from the former Philadelphia Transportation Company's Kensington Shops for trolley repairs (this is now at SEPTA Woodland Heavy Shops)

Of course, when you have around 8,000 stores, closing 400 (or 600, if you count ones changing brands) isn't nearly as big a deal as it is with some much smaller chains.

Most likely they are just getting rid of stores that don't do well, or older ones that don't really "fit" the current designs where they can't remake them easily.
