Visited the now Big Kmart (formerly Super Kmart) in Rome Georgia yesterday on my way home from a family reunion and got some pics that I will post later on. I also filled up at the Kmart Express gas station there and received 5 cents off for being a Shop Your Way Rewards Member. ;D

The Super K-Mart in Moon Township, PA closed last year.   It was recently demolished.
The property had been sold to Chevron which had planned to build a large office complex there
to serve as it's headquarters for natural gas shale drilling operations.

I found out the other day that Chevron has halted construction on that site.
Everything is on hold, pending the outcome of this fall's Pennsylvania Governor's Race.
Democrat Tom Wolfe has proposed an extraction tax on gas drilling.  My sources are saying
if he wins Chevron will abandon the site, and may pull out of the state all together.

So it looks like the former Super K-mart site may remain empty for some time.

Just to remind you, I'll be back at the Southgate, Michigan Super Kmart to see how much has changed during the first couple weeks of liquidation.

An update to the above post, showing the current state of store #4995.

The following was taken on July 28, the second day of liquidation.


The next nine were taken today.

What you will currently see to your left when you walk in through the grocery entrance. Sometime between July 28th and today, the appliance and outdoor furniture departments were moved respectively from the back-center and front-right areas of the store to the front right, in the exact spot formerly occupied by the fruit-and-vegetable area and part of the "dollar aisle".


Similarly, the candy aisle was relocated during that same timeframe from the "dollar aisle" to where the bath-ware aisle used to be.


This used to be the appliance department.


(Almost) completely bare shelves in what used to be the appliance department. The plushies on the left were moved there from (probably) the toy department.


This used to be the pharmacy. It closed on July 28th and all prescriptions were transferred to local Walgreens stores, including one within stone's throw of the store at Fort Street and Pennsylvania Road.

The magazine racks (which also sold candy, VHS tapes and other miscellaneous items) were removed permanently (either by people who bought fixtures while visiting or sent either to Hoffman Estates or to other stores) sometime since July 28th, giving the checkouts a somewhat barren appearance.


This is at the eastern back (Pennsylvania Road) entrance into the store.

Here's one last picture (by Rob Imes) showing what the store looked like on a typical day in early 2007. The then-still-operating cafeteria was originally a Little Caesar's (which, like Kmart, was founded in Garden City) outlet.


Also, the stacks of toilet paper that was in the center of the corridor separating the grocery and general merchandise areas that was there when liquidation began was no longer there...I didn't even see Prefer.

And to prove how behind Kmart really is on technology-this store had a couple television antennas (alongside a couple satellite dishes) on their roof! Do you know of any other Kmart stores that had TV antennas on their roofs? Reminder: this store opened in 1999, long after cable had started to dominate.

I wouldn't use the phrase "gutted" when referring to Elyria's Super Kmart. Sure, the Litehouse side was built out of the existing Super Kmart, but they still have the Garden Center entrance in use, as well as the occasional use of the actual Garden Center. As for Bargain Warehouse, it's like they just opened the doors from when it was Super K back in 2003 - coolers/cases, signage, and all - and said, "here, open a store, but we won't provide utilities beyond electricity." They didn't paint the Litehouse walls. They didn't paint ANYTHING. The Kmart signage - what's left of it - is still hanging in most areas on the walls. They're using Kmart's old fixtures as displays - the jewelry counter, the produce cases - and, while I haven't dared to explore it, the dairy cooler itself is probably still there as well.

Now, Elyria's old actual Kmart - by Midway Mall - was GUTTED and subdivided into three stores: Marc's took the majority of it and even added onto one side for extra space, with Bed Bath & Beyond taking the old 'main entrance' section, and Family Christian Store taking a small portion out of the portion occupied by BB&B.

The store originally included an attached Wrigley supermarket that closed in the late 1970's and that space remained vacant until 1997-98, when the store was renovated into a Big Kmart. It was the last remaining Big Kmart store in the area of Wayne County, Michigan bordered by I-94 to the north and I-275 to the west (and in fact, as of October 13th, there won't be any more Kmarts at all in that exact same area).

I haven't come across any news articles about that, so it's probably fake for now.

However, I will be visiting the Super Kmart in Southgate two more times-tomorrow and on it's last day in business, October 12.

Plus, there are actually no longer any Kmarts in Bloomfield Township, d_fife. The store there actually closed in December 2013.
