Kmart Canada was sold in 1997 and back then, the company that acquired it said: "We are committed to rebuilding Kmart Canada into a strong, national retail business".  In 1998, the stores closed.

Back then, Kmart President and CEO Floyd Hall, said the sale "is in keeping with our commitment to focus on our core U.S.-based operations and continue improving our overall financial performance. We appreciate the support of our Canadian customers, vendors and associates, and believe that the investor group will create a strong Canadian-owned business that will be competitive and profitable." In 1997, Kmart had 2,122 stores and today less than 1500...!

Here is a canadian Kmart that became a Zellers.  This store had the same look found on modern U.S. stores.

Cool. I never knew of any stores that had "The Saving Place" slogan on the building.

And here's a Kmart Brand (KMC was their house brand) smokeless ashtray from the 70's:

One of my K mart used to have that slogan, but they took it off. Also, I believe KMC stood for:

Kresge
M?
Company

I cna't remember what the M was though.

Hey, I was a teenager as well as an adult in the 80s but I actually looked more 70s then and I still look 70s today.

News reports say that Kmart layed off almost all full-time staff from it's stores today with no notice. And I thought they were understaffed as it is:o I also read they are not opening any more "Sears Essentials" stores.

I have been to Cromwell K-Mart last month. Little Ceaser's Pizza closed and was converted to a seasonal/special sales area. It looks tacky since they have buckets in two different parts of the store to collect rainwater. They still have many of their DVD's locked up to prevent shoplifting but most people like to read the back of the DVD before they buy it and its a pain to have to ask someone to open up the case. They converted the old Auto Service area to a seasonal area which was a good move. They gained some room in Health and Beauty Aids when they closed up the pharmacy. Still has room for a lot of improvement. For starters, they could get a power washer and wash the floors and dust off the shelves.
