A lone upsidedown K Mart carts sits by an abandon K Mart waiting to be taken away by crazed teenagers.

It doesn't really make sence. The K Mart name has only been around since 1972, but the company was still around. They were just called Kresge. Also K Marts still alive so it doesn't need a gravestone yet.

Wow. Even before it closed it came along way with looks. Look at these photos I posted on page 16 of the same store, taken in the early 90's.

the saginaw news says kmart is closing in bay road in the Saginaw county in michigan and only one store will be left in the saginaw county. the store closing will close march 21 and was 109,000 square feet. one in sagniaw closed 2 years ago because of the lease and one closed in 1993. the store was going to be expanded from 109,000 square feet to 180,000 square feet (To a supercenter), but the bankruptcy stopped it.

read the article http://www.mlive.com/business/sanews/index.ssf?/base/business-1/113586961449010.xml&coll=9

I know that them filing for bankruptcy stopped them from building a store in WAshington DC. just before they relocated one in Cranston Ri and opened one in New Vails new york. and upgraded some to supercenters (Store within store conversions) and most of those store within a store conversions closed in the spring 2003 rounds (1.3 years after they were upgraded and this probably happened because they were spending more than they were making on those stores and among them was in UTica michigan and this angered michgianers

Kmart reins supereme around Michigan. they closed the supercenter in detriot that opened in 1998. THAT angered K-mart fans and they promised it would stay open until AT LEAST when the lease was up in 2023. the one in dearborn michigan closed that time and fans were mad

Kmart closed a store in west virginia that made people mad as it was the only store around and it was a big store. they same deal was in exmore virginia. they were newer stores and newer stores cost more. just before bankrupcy kmart wanted to convert as many as 1300 of its 2100 stores at that time and said as many as 1300 can be turned into super kmarts.

They closed the only supercenters in new england: new haven connecticut and wallingford connecticut!!!!!!!!!!!!! They relocated existing stores to those stores. one of my college friends from new haven told me that there was a lot of shoplifting at the kmart in new haven (no surprise here!!!! and new haven bears the brunt of store closings, about all KBs around there closed, the bradlees in east haven closed in teh first wave, toys r us in east haven closed, kmart closed etc and new haven is crime ridden) those 2 kmarts will be wal-marts and the wal-mart in wallingford relocated to the super kmart building.

the only super k I have been to is in Queensbury/GLens falls new york and it was like a super wal-mart. they closed half the supercenters in teh 3rd round. I guess it is not uncommon to close newer stores!!!! the older stores have more of a tendancy to stay becuase of lower rents and they have stayed long enough to built and ammas customers over the years. another problem with more recent stores is that it did not work out.

I have said this before. K-mart pulled out of several markets in texas: houston, fort worth, san antanio, sherman, tyler, waco, galveston, odessa, san angelo, austin, dallas, beaumont, amarillo, witchata falls, texas city, and closed 80 of their 100 stores in texas, leaving only 20 and most of them are in smaller cities, THEY left all their stores in el paso and mcallen.

they also pulled out of these metropolitan areas, yuma arizona, lawrence kansas, lafayette and monroe lousiana, jackson missisippi, lincoln nebraska, mansfield ohio, richland washington and madison wisconson. they left in 289 metropolitan areas.

and they pulled out of oklahoma city in the first bankruptcy wave. they entered that in 1998 when they acquired former Venture stores.

When did K-mart do away w/ith Kmart foods. from the ones in Albany new york and BAngor maine and some others, I can tell there was grocery store next to them (K-mart foods). the ones in Albany new york and Bangor maine looked the same. the k-mart in milford massachusetts (has a store next to it to the right and that may have been a k-mart foods).

they closed 110 stores in early 1995, 72 stores in fall 1995, 20 to 30 to 40 here and there from 1996-1998, 72 in fall 2000 (They said many of these stores were marginally profitable, and they did not justify for investments adn closings were factored among things like location and being able to be expanded, like some stores could not be expanded and among those were north conway new hampshire and one in chicago and middletown rhode island and the super center in amsterdam, alot of those 72 stores were not big K yet, and at the time they were converting the last remaining un-Big-K stores to Big Kmarts, and alot of those stores were older and smaller, like palmer, westfield, great barrington, haverhill, acton, newburyport, and springfield (teh store was big, but old and it had a funny smell) massachusetts, portsmouth and manchester new hampshire. in 2001 they closed 4 (probably due to lease and the kmart in gilford closed then and I WAS NOT SURPRISED the store was dirty, not well stocked and junky and trashy and never saw its chance of being a big Kmart), in 2002 they clsoed 283 stores and 6 stores due to leases expiring, in 2003 they closed 316 stores, and in 2004 they sold 18 stores to home depot and 50 to SEars (Which they acquired) and closed 8 due to leases going otu and some in San Jose california to Kohl's. in 2005 they closed maybe a few due to leases expiring. they seemed to have closed some in the 1980s, they closed ones in Chelsea, Clinton, Natick, Hingham and Woburn massachusetts.  in the 1990s they expanded some stores, remodeled some and relocated some to bigger stores and changed the logo. the stores in new hampshire untouched at that time were in Gilford (54,000 square feet), North conway (40,000 square feet), portsmouth (probably like 72,000 square feet), and manchester (72,000 square fet) new hampshire, south burlington and bennington (56,000 square feet) vermont. it seems that ones below 80,000 square feet are undersized. the untouched ones had the old logo, wooden cash registers and service desks, black and sometimes marble floors, orange walls and the departs would be labled on white lettering on the orange walls and they would ahve a sign hang in isles not near the walls. now they have a new logo. kmart was big time going strong in the 1970s and at that time target had 52 stores and wal-mart had 153 and now they caught up!!!!! they had blue light specials from 1965-1991.

http://www.angelfire.com/mi4/forgottenmi/fortsaginaw.html says the kmart that closed in 2004 in sagniaw. it was like 110000 square feet. this is probably what the kmarts in bangor maine or ones that look like bangor look like. but bangor store opened in 1972. the one in albany new york looked like bangor, but I do not know when it opened and it probably looked like this. the kmarts that i knew that were built in 1972, Salem new hampshire, and the kmarts that i knew that were built in 1971, manchester connecticut, fitchburg, swansea and pittsfield mass, did not look like this. maybe the early 1970s was transitions of those formats. LOOK AT THE KMART SIGN AT THE VERY LEFT END OF THE PHOTO. IT says the store was built in 1966, and 110000 square feet.
