McCrory historically had many connections to its siblings in the variety store industry.  In its final years, it swallowed all of its major competitors except Neisner's (acquired by Ames) and Woolworth (shuttered by its corporation).  Though the stores became known as lower end variety stores in the 1980's and 1990's, in the golden era of variety stores they were a formidable competitor.  They had many downtown locations, most often within a block rather than on a corner like many of their competitors.  The company retained its namesake downtown stores much longer than most of its competitors, and they often chose the McCrory location downtown over one of their acquisition's locations.  The downtown Miami store survived well into the 1990's as a very vibrant downtown merchandise mart with a brisk food service business and leased check cashing and mini food-mart businesses.  It annexed an adjacent W.T. Grant store and added its food service operations to its own.  This store even boasted an escalator, a rarity in McCrory stores.  McCrory ultimately became the graveyard for such well known variety store banners as McLellan's, H.L. Green, J.J. Newberry, S.H. Kress, V.J. Elmore, Silvers, Britts, Kittinger, TG&Y, and G.C. Murphy.  Their last sigh was the Dollar Zone chain that flared briefly and brightly in the early 2000's.  I have hundreds of stories about my visits to McCrory and sister banner stores to shop and eat at their food service areas.

At Bauger's in Maryland, in a lot behind the restaurant, I saw a McCrory Store trailer with lists of 7 or so Maryland locations!

I remember there was one located in the old Naugatuck Valley Mall in waterbury (walmart, Stop and shop, Bobs) are there now) they used to have a snack bar like woolworths.

I found this label scar on a trip through LaVale, MD today. My friend was showing me around, being I've never been to MD before. This is on an Ollie's Bargain Outlet store.

I feel sure that I am the only one here who fondly remembers shopping in all these stores as a kid.  As I grew up and moved around, it was always comforting to move to a new place and find the nearest GC Murphy, Murphy Mart, etc.  The stores were always well-stocked and clean with friendly employees (usually older women) and had the best counter food in town.  (Since this was way before McDonalds sprang up on every corner, it was the one place to go for a fountain Coke and french fries!)

Former home to McCrory's, the building once again has been subdived into 2 store fronts.
McCrory's occupied both spaces and had huge cranberry and white awnings that rolled out during the summer months.

I'll try and get picture when the location still had it's sign up.

McCrory's on South Salisbury Blvd. (US 13 Business) Salisbury, MD, shortly after it closed. This has been redeveloped but I can't remember for sure what is there now-maybe an AutoZone or Advance Auto?

Ollie's site suggests they started in 1982 and doesn't mention any connection.
