JC Penney pulls the plug on appliances, furniture

They're going to focus on their core offerings going forward. Appliances go away completely, and furniture will go online-only.

I also read that it wants to downsize stores as well, which appears compatible to losing appliances, and furniture.

I could see in A malls in good locations, where it might operate at two levels with parking lot exits and mall exits, it leasing or selling it's space on one of the levels, so that it just operates on the remaining level. Maybe it will look to follow Kohl's, or Burlington/TJX/Gabe's strategy of success with smaller stores. Apparently shoppers like the treasure hunt like experience of going into Burlington and Marshall's and sifting through various garments to find a good one that is low priced.
