So a friend of mine who is still a subscriber to the paper version of the Waterbury newspaper told me the article said the store is closing because sales have been slow and that no other Connecticut stores would be closing. (Where have we heard that before?)

I think why the store closed is since Waterbury is a lower income city, the donations weren't coming in like some other locations. Without donations, you cant sell stuff aka leads to poor sales.

Wolcott Road (where the Savers was located) has been really going downhill since Caldor and more importantly the Naugatuck Valley Mall closed down in the late 90s. The Kmart just left there on the 11th of November as well. Sucks, Wolcott Rd. used to be a really great place to hang!

Wolcott Street in Waterbury isn't too bad.

The old Caldor on the corner of Lakewood and Wolcott is 1/3 occupied. It's Planet Fitness. Nothing ever moved into the old Bernie's after that chain went under in 2010. Jump Zone which was also in the old Caldor closed reportedly because of high rent. There is also a Goodwill Store in that plaza in a separate building. The other part of the building where Goodwill is is vacant. There is also room to build 2 PADS.

Shoprite Plaza has only one vacancy. A 3624 spot that was last a Casual Male XL store. They (along with a bunch of other locations after the Big and Tall Shops Merged). Shoprite has been in this location since 2008 after moving from The Mattatuck Plaza on the opposite side of Wolcott Street. Stores include: Shoprite, TJ MAXX, Sleepy's, Royal Buffet, America Steak House, Petco, Game Stop in a separate building along with the former Casual Male Store, and a PAD Site where a new Taco Bell is located.

Across the street is The Naugatuck Valley Shopping Center, which was built where The Naugatuck Valley Mall used to be. There are many businesses there including Staples, Stop & Shop, Walmart, Panera, Bob's Clothing, and more. The 2 largest vacancies are a 35,000 space that used to be Linen's N Things and a 20,000 Square Foot Space that was The Rag Shop. Things might get interesting when Walmart moves to the other side of Waterbury in 2015. DDR is currently selling the plaza!

In back of The Naugatuck Valley Shopping Center is Mallview Plaza. Ridiculously this plaza has an address of 117 Sharon Road, but there's no access from Sharon Road. Right now there's just 3 tenants - Mr. Wok Buffet, an Italian Restaurant, and Waterbury Public Access TV Channel 13. Emoty includes the former Creative Cinemas. They just should rip this down all together.

KMART Plaza is a mess. Although the landlord - Tartaglia Properties is fixing up the plaza it's still blah. A vacant KMART (though part of it may become Christmas Tree Shop), Joanns, Modell Sports, AAA Travel (in the old Friendly's which was The Pie Plate), and a daycare that takes up 5 store fronts.

Mattatuck Plaza was making a comeback until Saver's closed.

What's with Waterbury not getting any electronic stores?

No Best Buys, I don't think Circuit City was there either. No PC Richards and son and don't expect them there ever. They have said they aren't opening anymore stores in CT and seem to regret a few (Enfield, North Haven, Milford to name a few).

I think that electronics retailers might fear a high theft rate if they open in the Waterbury area.  The last electronics retailer that was in Waterbury was Bernie's I believe.

Another thrift shop is moving into the old Saver's at 650 Wolcott Street in Waterbury. It's called The Red White and Blue Thrift Store. They have 20 locations and currently have a location in Colonial Plaza on Thomaston Avenue in Waterbury. No word if they will keep the Colonial Plaza location open or not.

The website doesn't mention the move to 650 Wolcott Street, but my friend's wife told me she saw the signs in the window when she was shopping at Big Lots next door.

Saver's changed the pricing on their books. I made out really well with books at their Meriden, CT store on Friday. Also of note although the Meriden store is larger than their Bristol store, they very little in the way of Halloween costumes. Bristol has a large selection of Halloween costumes.

Saver's in Meriden, Connecticut closed at the end of 2019. Part of the space is about to become an Aldi.

Saver's in Bristol, Connecticut closed on March 16th, 2020 the day before everything closed due to the pandemic. They didn't reopen and in September 2021 the space became a Burlington.

I was at the Bristol one on March 1, 2020 (16 short days before it closed for the final time)

I am lucky to have a store like this in Manchester, CT that is still open today.
