JCP shuttering some stores this year

JCP has announced they will be closing some stores this year. Particularly small-market stores.

Small market stores? They have one in Torrington, CT that is under 30,000 square feet. That's around the size of an average TJ MAXX or Marshall's.

Small market stores?

In Maine, JCP in Waterville and Rockland come to mind for me.  They're smaller stores in small shopping plazas, not malls.

JCP at Maine Mall and Bangor Mall are probably okay but Auburn Mall could end up on the list.

In NH, North Conway, Rochester, Keene and West Lebanon are in smaller markets.  Salem, Nashua, Newington, Concord and Manchester are possibly safer.

REALLY dead!

The entire upper-end is now vacant as Sears is gone.
About the same time that happened the Philip Pelusi hair salon, a charter tenant,
moved out to a nearby strip center.

The mall is basically vacant from the former Sears and Lazarus stores all the way
down to the food court.  The food court just lost Italian Village Pizza, another charter
tenant.  I think it may be down to two restaurants.

The lease was up at FYE and they were not planning to renew from what I heard.

Macy's closed last year, so now Pennys is the only remaining anchor tenant in this huge mall.

Rumor is UPMC wants to buy it, tear it down and build a hospital.

how many stores left and what of hte retail near the mall

Retail near the mall is doing somewhat better.

There is a Super Walmart and a Sam's Club up the hill directly behind it.
Also a Big Lots store in a former Ames location that appears to be doing well.
And a new Lowe's is under construction there next to a Dollar Tree.  Plus an
old movie theater was refurbished and reopened.

Down at the bottom of the hill the Southland Shopping Center is mostly filled.
This was the area's major shopping hub before Century III was built.

Looks like around 50 stores remain, with JC Penney and Dicks Sporting Goods being the largest.
Seems like a lot, but the mall is massive.

That seems strange (the fact that that mall has issues, not the stores in particular), given where it is and the lack of similar options in quite a wide area around it.
