I needed something to take up my free time on winter break and thought I'd whip up a history of Eastgate Mall just outside of Cincinnati.

Eastgate Mall opened in 1980 and was renovated in mid-2003.  It is owned by CBL.  Using web.archive.org's saved mall directories dating back to 2001, I was able to make note of which stores were in which spaces in the mall as of the end of that year.  I created a spreadsheet with all of these, sorted by year and space number.
Different colors denote different tenants.  Red means that the tenant was the first in the space (as of 2001), orange means the second tenant, yellow the third, and so on.  In other words, the farther down the rainbow a space is, the more tenants it has had over the past fifteen years.
Recently, new tenants have elected to take over smaller spaces and mash them all into one space.  This means that some spaces listed on directories in previous years are gone with the wind.  (Eastgate played with the space numbers a little during the 2003 renovations, when the southernmost end of the mall was changed from a flat entryway to a circular food court.  Several spaces were created in the process that did not exist prior to 2003.)

The whole reason behind creating this spreadsheet was to see if I was just biased, or if the mall really was doing worse than it had been a few years ago.  In short, it is doing worse, although it isn't as bad as it was during the recession.  Again, the number of spaces in the mall is important - and it should be distinguished from the number of tenants.  At the bottom of the sheet, I calculated the occupancy percentage per year.  It is pretty much what you should expect, given that foot traffic in most malls has died down recently.

Nicholas Eckhart also created a similar spreadsheet for Midway Mall in Elyria, Ohio.  Apparently this mall has been through three different owners since 2001.  Notice how much longer the tenants last in Midway compared to Eastgate, and compare the colors...
