That's some fantastic research!! I remember when the Zayre then Ames store closed in Manchester back in 1993, I've been on the hunt for a picture of that store since the plaza was torn down for the new Verizon Center.

I also remember that Ames verrrry vaguely. I would love to see a TON of old pictures of Manch-Vegas during the early 90's. The Kmart in Manchester during that time was the only vintage K-Mart I can vividly see in my memory (low ceilings even as a little kid!), ohh going to Chuck E' Cheese, Kmart, Toys R Us and the Mall of NH was like THE TRIP back then. I remember the excitment as you started to enter the outskirts of the city and things started looking real "ghetto". I took a trip to Manchester for the first time in several years back in 2005 and we all loved visiting the Toys R Us again for the first time as a kid (at the time we were all 18), it was fully unremodeled with a decrepit looking closed Kids R' Us next to it. The way the store looked at that time in 2005, I thought it had a good chance of closing. I went again last month and (sadly?) the entire Toys R Us has been remodeled with new logos and a Babies R Us instead. The store looked similar to the one that currently still exists in Nashua next to the Fox Run mall.

I feel like I never saw a non-white employee at Ames, this is true, but the area I live in was dominantly white up to the late 90's/early 2000's too...

I also remember that Ames verrrry vaguely. The Kmart in Manchester during that time was better though, ohh going to Chuck E' Cheese, Kmart, Toys R Us and the Mall of NH was like THE TRIP back then

CONCORD - October 22, 1995 An Ames Department Stores security guard claims the company practiced racial discrimination when it refused to promote him to several job positions for which he believed he was highly qualified.
Audu J. Hamed, a retired Nigerian Army captain, alleged in a suit filed last week in U.S. District Court in Concord that he was bypassed for white candidates who were less qualified than he.who worked in Ames stores in Massachusetts and Manchester, Salem and Seabrook

I feel like I never saw a non-white employee at Ames, this is true, but the area I live in was dominantly white up to the late 90's/early 2000's too...

October 18, 2003,  Ocean State Job Lot to open NH store
New Hampshire's first Ocean State Job Lot store plans to open Nov. 6 in Peterborough Plaza, off Route 101, in space formerly occupied by Ames.

November 1, 2002, Shaw's Supermarkets plans to buy control of 18 former Ames Department Stores in New England, including sites in Peterborough, Stratham, and Woodsville and convert them to 70,000-square-foot grocery stores. This is the Ames I got my red shopping cart from. It feels like it's been an OSJL for ages now, and it's really only been slightly over six years

Getting our family NES at that Manchester K-Mart....one of the very earliest memories I have...was either 1990 or 1991. At this time many Kmart's closer to where I lived already had the updated logo and were brighter, larger stores. This one seemed bizarre, compact, and orange lighting.
The thing that confuses me though is that article says Manchester lost its last downtown dept store with the Early 1993 Ames closing, did the Kmart close before that? I thought that location was around longer than 1992 but maybe not....heck probably not. Where does time go?

The article is correct Ames department store that closed in downtown Manchester on Elm Street was originally a Zayre. This entire complex is now gone replaced by the Verizon center. The only Kmart in Manchester that I know of was located on South Willow Street across from the Mall of New Hampshire now a Burlington Coat Factory, it's about a 10 minute drive from downtown shopping district.
There is a lot in store for you where clean, fresh and good make a GRAND UNION.

Ohh they don't consider that downtown...haha ok. Yes I'm familiar with usually entering Manchester past Jordan Marsh and onto S. Willow street.
