It's official...All P&C stores will close permanently on February 15, 2010.  It is rumored, however, that Price Chopper will buy out those P&C stores where a Price Chopper store is not currently located.  Here in the North Country, that would include Canton, Potsdam, Gouverneur, Massena and Carthage, plus Pulaski down in the Syracuse area.  Malone currently has a Price Chopper, but tneir P&C closed years ago.  Ogdensburg and Watertown would most likely lose their P&C stores since Price Chopper already has a store in each of those cities.  (P&C Foods:  1942 - 2010).

P.S. You can check out a video about this from News 10 Now's website, www.news10now.com.

THIS P&C is still abandoned: http://www.flickr.com/photos/drpep1024/832804672/

it replaced this store: http://www.flickr.com/photos/drpep1024/855448866/

another former P&C: http://www.flickr.com/photos/drpep1024/3270985706/

I suspect lots of P&Cs will become independent markets like IGA, Great Valu, Thriftway, ShopRite, etc. Or what about Big Lots? :flaming:

Hello. I found some of my P&C flickr photos linked from this site. I want to point out the the first link in the above post stating "this P&C is still abandoned" is longer true. It is now a Harley Davidson dealership.

  A better view.

Feel free to look around my flickr pages. I have many supermarket and other retail photos and even some empty Ames on there.

I was there August 2008, and it was vacant then. That store reminds me of mid 90's Super Fresh and Grand Union stores.

I don't know about NH.  I only heard that all P&C and Quality Markets stores in New York State are definitely closing, along with their warehouses.

ALL P&C stores that have not been sold will close in February.

There was mention that Price Chopper would acquire some locations where they currently have no stores. Price Chopper is in Keene and West Lebanon NH already, maybe they will move into the Lincoln store.
There is a lot in store for you where clean, fresh and good make a GRAND UNION.

Yes, Price Chopper is making the bid for 22 soon to be former P&C stores in central New York(as well as some in NH and VT). The article is to be found here: http://blog.timesunion.com/business/price-chopper-makes-bid-to-take-on-wegmans/16506/

Many speculate this is leading to a competition battle with Wegmans since they are entering a piece of their market that they haven't had an aggressive presence in beforehand. That, coupled with the long held belief that Price Chopper won't let Wegmans enter the Albany market which Price Chopper has held their grasp on for so long, may change the game a little bit. I myself hope Wegmans opens stores on this side of the state. We could use them.

Don't count on it. I work for Wegmans in PA and the only place they are expanding is what they call "new markets" (PA/NJ/MD/VA..), places where they can make money on higher end goods. It is unlikely they will add any new stores (although they do usually remodel/expand a few a year) in NY anytime in the near future. I'm worried actually that Wegmans is expanding way too fast...moving into new areas, places hit hardest by foreclosures, job losses, etc. I have already noticed at my store people aren't buying the higher-margin goods anymore (overall) and are sticking with the very basics.

According to my local newspaper today, Tops Markets has offered Penn Traffic $90 million to buy the entire P&C Foods chain.  This is compared to the $12.3 million offered by Price Chopper, who only wants 22 of the 79 stores.  Tops offer would keep all P&C stores open, plus P&C and Tops have the same union.  I hope Tops buys P&C because if Price Chopper gets it, our P&C would close.
