CRANSTON TO PHASE OUT U.S. MANUFACTURING OPERATION

Cranston, the textile division of the 185 year old Cranston Print Works Company, announced it will immediately begin to phase out its Webster, Massachusetts based printing, finishing, and engraving operations. Currently 75% of production occurs at the Massachusetts facility; by June 1, 2009, 100% of all production will be outsourced. A phase out also will occur at the Cranston, Rhode Island light packaging operation with most functions absorbed by the Webster location. In total, approximately 75 jobs will be eliminated. Remaining at the Webster location will be approximately 50 people in the Distribution Center, Put-Up/Packaging, Administration, Customer Service, Marketing, Sales, and Supply Chain/Global Sourcing. In addition, Design, Sales, and Executive Offices will remain in New York City.

"Our traditional over-the-counter fabric market continues to be highly competitive and over supplied," said Andrew F. Sylvia, president, Cranston. "The market place has become more customized and less volume driven, causing excess capacity and increased costs. Moreover, as we have successfully launched new product categories to expand our business, many of these products can not be produced in Webster. All of these factors coupled with the dire economic environment made it necessary to change our business model."

An integral part of Cranston's new business model includes increased emphasis on textile related finished products that leverage the strength of their licensing partners. Their primary focus, however, will continue to be providing creative product for the over-the-counter fabric business through its well-established worldwide distribution network.

"This was a very difficult and emotional decision," continued Mr. Sylvia. "Most employees are veterans of this company, with many over 30 years of service. The Webster plant is a premier cotton print plant known throughout the world for its quality and cutting edge technology. This reputation was built through the dedication and commitment of all the many employees who worked here over the years and gave their best every day. I have never been associated with a finer group of people."

Cranston has become proficient in global sourcing during the past ten years and will continue to provide the highest quality product and service. This transition will be seamless to our customers. Our manufacturing expertise in printing and finishing will remain in our global sourcing capabilities. We will continue to provide innovation and creativity through our V.I.P, Quilting Treasures, and Cranston Home brands."

Thats awful.  I know a few people in town who have already been shafted by CPW after years or service.  Not to mention the mill is historic not just to the area, but to American industry.  It was one of Samuel Slaters first mills.  Another thing is his house was torn down to build the Exxon across the street.  Way to go Webster historical society.
