So-called music in 2008/2009 has no rhythm. Just an electronic beat. Music in even the late 90's was better than this. Is it a sign of the times?

And if you want an example look at the new Geico commercials. They ruined a Michael Jackson song. What happened to the gecko or even the cavemen? What is cash with eyes supposed to mean?

While my musical tastes range over many decades, I maintain that there is indeed plenty of good music being made today, it simply is not being made by the artists that receive radio play (which generally has more to do with money and label backing than any level of talent, it's nearly impossible for a DJ to 'launch' an artist now whereas virtually every song and every playlist is decided for them). The Top 40 is rubbish, and it was in the 90s as well. That's no exaggeration. It's horrible and inane. But there certainly is quality music being made right now -- you just need to dig a little deeper to find it, unfortunately. I credit the years I spent hosting a radio show on an open-format station to opening my ears to a lot of great stuff -- both past and present -- that I wouldn't have encountered otherwise.

I have about a thousand of my CDs in an Excel spreadsheet, and, after sorting them by year, was kind of surprised to find that the greatest number of discs that I own were released in this last decade. Certainly some of them were reissues of great albums from the 70s and 80s, but most of them actually were released in the 2000s.

Granted, I don't have a column in my spreadsheet for "Appeared On American Top 40 Radio,"** but it's safe to say that the number meeting that qualification would be pretty low. :P

**(I make this distinction because some of the albums I own from this decade may have appeared on the UK Top 40, where evidently they actually like bands with guitars and decent songs.) :bounce:

Too many covers and remixes.

What I hate is how so many hip hop songs today "sample" (as in plagiarize) old songs. Sampling has existed since the 60's, but it has become much more common, and the new songs often add vulgar lyrics.:exorcist:

There's one that just came out a few weeks ago. They took the old-time classic "What's Your Name/Who's Your Daddy?" and remixed portions of it into a hip-hop song.

Are you talking about "Time of the Season" by the Zombies (the original track, I mean)? Rod Argent + Colin Blunstone = Awesome. :yup:

Too bad most of the kids today will only know this "new" track that you speak of (I haven't heard it myself)...I hate it when folks do that, as it's one thing to sample something obscure (the Beastie Boys did it in 1994 with the track "Flute Thing" from The Blues Project's seminal but often overlooked 1966 release Projections, for example), but entirely another to butcher a track that charted in another decade and is still fairly well known to people. It's too bad hardly any decent acts have the money or record company support to make it onto the charts these days...if they did, it wouldn't seem like there was such a dearth of quality music.

Yeah that's the one. Time of the season. Um if you can stand the music for a while go listen to Hartford's HOT 93.7 online: http://www.hot937.com/ The song is in heavy rotation so you should hear the song fairly quickly.

Oh, I hate what they did to that song. The regular "new" version is alright, but when they play it on the mix shows and chop it up even more, it's more of a repeat of the same few lines and it just annoys the heck out of me.

I pretty much despise all modern music (well except for maybe Weezer, they're pretty good), and only listen to rock from the 60's through 90's.

Weezer is still making music in 2009?

Yes. They released their sixth album last year, if memory serves.

I don't have it, but a friend said it was very good.

Muse is a really good band, imo.

I REALLY liked their first two albums (Showbiz and Origin of Symmetry).
