We rather slow tonight, and one of my managers came up with this topic, "If Wal-Mart, decided to go out of business tommorrow, what would happen?"

The manager believed that the economy would be GREATLY impacted by the loss of Wal-Mart, even enough to start a recession.  His answer was summed up by these points
1) People of "lower-income" would negatively impacted by having to shop stores with higher prices.
2) Land values would decrease because of vacant-property
3) Suppliers would lose a large portion of their sales because Wal-Mart's size
4) 500,000 newly unemployed associates would flood the market-place making jobs harder to find. Those who could not find jobs would be forced on the welfare/food stamp programs.
5) Taxes would rise to support the unemployed associates on food stamps/welfare. They would rise because of the added support of those who need to shop at stores with higher prices.
6) Smaller suppliers, manufacturers, vendors, contractors, etc. could be forced out of business.
7) Prices would rise because of the lack of Wal-Mart influence on "lower prices"
8) Remaining retailers would feel the windfall of affected vendors, suppliers, contractors, distributors, etc. Prices would rise to support the loss of business--> retailers would pass this on to you.
9) Smaller retailers could handle the higher prices and be forced out of business
10) It could lead to the end of the world (Joke)

So feel free to add your thoughts.....

What do YOU think would happen?

I would loose my job

millions or billions of jobs would be lost.

3000 empty spaces and they would be hard to fill

many towns without a store and many without anything for hundreds of miles

but I might find a better one as I hate how I am the only cartpusher left at my WAl-mart in Plymouth (one got fired for not showing up for 2 weeks without calling and one became a casheer).

Remaining retailers would feel the windfall of affected vendors, suppliers, contractors, distributors, etc....

...but they would be very happy to catch all the business that Wal-Mart had (billions in sales available for other retailers).

I would be out of work (again). And the world as we know it would come to an end.
