What does everyone think of the self-checkouts (also called "Fastlane" by NCR, "U-Scan" by Fujistic) that seem to be popping up in stores lately??

When they first came to our Kroger stores, the Union put a fight because they thought it would negatively impact the need for cashiers...

Anyways, just wanted to know what everyone thought of them... feel free to compare and constant different systems at different stores...

They're pretty decent at some stores, but so sensitive at others it's not even worth it.

I never had a problem using them, I go to them first, usually no one is at them and I get in and out and the people that were in line are still waiting to check out

I like them, the only problem i ever got was when i used pennies at a Wal-Mart Self-checkout, they got stuck in the slot... i wanted to get rid of my spare change and pay the exact amount... i ended up with even more change because i had to add a dollar.

I agree there, especially when you use them at Wal-Mart.

Our Wal-Mart took out their U-Scans after they converted to a SuperCenter... worst idea they ever had. I NEVER used a cashier at Wal-Mart, just the self-scan and was out the door in a few seconds. Now I have in line for 10 minutes just buy a bottle of water, the express lanes aren't helpful because they stick newbies on them.

The only problem with Wal-Mart U-Scans is writing a check. Unlike Kroger, where you simply present the check to the operator, at Wal-Mart you have to wait for the operator to come, suspend your transaction, go the operator station where you had them a suspect receipt. Then they have to un-suspend it and go through the whole check writing process... needless waste of time...

I usually use the U-Scans to rid of change... I once paid a $15.00 bill with nothing but change... it took me awhile to pay for it...

I find them very annoying especially at Stop & Shop with all the computerized voices telling customers instructions over and over and over again.

I can take em or leave em. The Walmart I work at doesnt have them. And when I worked at Price Chopper I used to enjoy operating it.

WE NEED THEM in our local wal*mart. I know they wont put them in even if I got the CEOs number. The "express lanes" suck. 2 people and they lanes split by NO WHERE near the door.

I love the self checkouts, but in CT, only supermarkets and Home Depots have them. I use them when I go to A&P in Berlin. They give me no problem, but I hate that you must bag everything (even a soda) or the transaction won't go through.

The Waldbaum's in West Hartford where I work has 4 of them, but I don't think they have a regular express lane. That means I may have to start as a cashier with large orders. I really don't know if I'll enjoy that!

Big orders are fun...as long as you have a back belt, just whip the crap through. if you don't...then...egh. it's a pain in the tushie cuz you'll have to bag everything right then. And I love self checkout because I bag better than the people that work there. I've been doing it for pay since I was 17, and before that, my mom made me bag her stuff all the time since I was tall enough to reach it. Good luck.

I ran into a problem with them a while back at Home Depot and Wal-Mart...  Usually when I shop I grab a soda or something if I'm with my girlfriend (its going to be a while).  When I was cashing out, the weight scales are pretty sensitive, and the half drank soda always messed it up!  :insane:

the ones at my walmarts up here have the option to press "skip bagging". After like 5 times of pressing it, it will say please wait for assistance. but if it's just one time, it won't ask for assistance. I love self checkouts. No one is ever on them, I don't have to wait, and I don't have to deal with the cashiers that always seem to be in a crappy mood. At least they have jobs. They should be happy about that. I don't have a real job, just an independent contractor. So cheer up!!! hehe

I like how they take your gift cards the first swipe. OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOR you debit cards for that matter. Yeah the S Bagging feature is annoying, just ran into that today at foodtown.

They suck IMO and were put in place way too early. I don't think I have ever gone through a self checkout line without some kind of error.
My old Wal-Mart had them, but it is now a Supercenter and they didn't include them (huge source of theft).
Home depot has them and they work okay.
my ShopRite has them but there is always random bagging errors and coupons don't always scan.
BJ's are pretty good, since I can "borrow" a friends membership card since nobody has to check it, but they are always filthy so nothing scans on the first try.

My husband is a supervisor for Kroger and we laughed when they first brought in the u-scan years ago as a test.  Everyone "heard" that it would mean the end of the need for checkers and that everyone would be out of a job.

All it meant was that fewer lines would be open and you could always choose to go through u-scan when you were in a hurry.  No jobs were ever lost and I love it!

I do like how this way you don't have to worry about some moron putting your bread or eggs in the same bag as a bunch of 3 litre bottles of pepsi.
