champlain centre mall (South and North)

The Champlain centre mall south was built in 1987 with a 50,000 sf Steinbach, a 53,000 sf Service merchandise, a 84,000 sf Hill's department store, a small Jc penny, and a sears smaller than others. The has 60-80 stores and is 600,000 sf. Hill's became Ames in 1999 and that closed in 2002. Steinbach and Service Merchandise closed in 1999, due to the companies problems. in late 2002-mid 2003 the mall had 3 vacant anchors. Toys r us opened in 1997 in a 17,000 sf space in the mall and closed in february 2002 when the mall terminated its lease to give way to Borders Books, that opened in summer 2002. CVS closed and  became another store, this happened 2002. there is FYE and vermont store. Old navy came in the early  2000s. the waldenbooks closed when borders opened. Dick's sporting goods replaced stienbach in 2003 and gander mountain replaced service merchandise in 2004 or 2005. REx appliances closed in 2005 and a 20,000 sf Best buy opened where REx's was in February 2006. the mall has a food court with burger king. Ames, still vacant as of late 2005, is rumored to be demolished and rebuilt into a 126,000 sf Target, but this has nit been confirmed. this mall hurt the mall that opened before it -champlain centre mall.

There was a mall across the street called Champlain centre North that opened in 1975 with Kmart and a smaller 31,000 sf Price Chopper. Montgomery Ward was in the mall. the mall had smaller stores, but I do not know much about the older mall. the wards closed in late 1997 and the mall died. The mall was torn down in 2000 and in 2001 Lowe's opened where the old mall was. Kmart was all that was left of the old mall and got another facelift. Price chopper moved to larger quarters in the complex and bed bath and beyond and petco opened in the old price chopper, and a few more stores opened where the old mall was and Applebee's and Friendly's are on premisis.

You got the names mixed up..hehe. Champlain Centre South was built in 1975 with Kmart, Montgomery Ward and JCPenney. Then, in 1989, Champlain Centre North opened, and killed off the older mall. The North mall has JCPenney, Sears, Gander Mountain(former Service Merchandise), Dick's Sporting Goods(former Stienbach), a 10 screen Regal Cinema, and a vacant Hills/Ames. There is also a Borders. The older mall was demolished, and then Price Chopper came in, as well as Lowes, Petco, and other stores. The old Kmart is still there.  Both malls were built and owned by the Pyramid Mall Company.

Hey guys, i need more information about shopping centers and restaurants in Plattsburgh.  I looked up the area with google maps. I saw Champlain centres, Plattsburgh Plaza, an Ames plaza and Consumer Square: i would like more details, thank you!

PLATTSBURGH -- Demolition of the former Ames building at Champlain Centre mall is paving the way for construction of the new Target store.

The new store will be about 126,842 square feet. By comparison, the former Ames building was 80,939 square feet.
