Does anyone remember these "yellow" roofed restaurants and motor lodges from the 60's and 70's.  The had their own unique looking buildings and colors as did Howard Johnson's.
Does anyone know if any of them are still open?

A Hornes in Port Royal, VA still operates.  It looks just like it did back in the day, yellow roof and all.  I'll write more about Horne's later.  I experienced many of these over the years.  The Port Royal one does have a website.  There is more about Hornes on stuckonstuckeys.com.

How many Horne's locations remain in total?  Will they end up outlasting Howard Johnson's?

Has anyone seen the new "Old Navy" commercial?  At the very end they show a pristine Horne's restaurant with its bright yellow roof.  I real treat to see! :P

Along Highway 99 near Bakersfield Ca there was an abandoned Horne's, the sign was still there but the building was pretty well trashed. When I was last down that way about 3 years ago the sign was gone but what was left of the building was still there.

HoJofan206

If you are back up that way anytime soon please try to get some pictures of the old Hornes sight before it is gone forever!!

HoJofan206

I think that any Horne's that are still in excistance are very much so like Howard Johnson's restaurants....pretty much on their own.  I know at least 1 or 2 still in excistance.

Does anyone know if Horne's used yellow tiles on the roof buildings or what was the "yellow" substance made of?

HoJofan206

They had Horne's locations in California?  I didnt realize that they were that abroad the US.

dooneyt63

I believe the roof tiles were a metal material with a yellow baked enamel finish.

HoJofan206

Does anyone know approximately how many locations Horne's had at the height of their business?  I know the 1970's oil/gas shortage didnt help the business.

dooneyt63

I believe there were around 120-130 locations.  Some were just the souvenir shop/coffee shop/gas station locations, others were motor lodges, and some had more advanced restaurants called Crown Rooms.

HoJofan206

WOW, I hd no idea that the company was THAT large.  I thought is was a lot smaller than that.

HoJofan206

I guess Horne's is no longer serving Old Navy jeans as a food item.  I havent seen that commercial for a few weeks now.
