I live in Southington, Connecticut. Here's some of the dead stores and what's there now in my area.

BRISTOL:

Bradlees - Torn Down in late 2003/early 2004. Replaced by Super Stop & Shop. (Moved from the other end of the same Plaza).

Old Super Stop & Shop in that Plaza - Job Lot moved in November 2005.

Caldor - Big KMART opened in Summer 1999, closed in 2002. Price Chopper opened January 2004.

Waldbaums on Rte 6. - Closed in 1998 or 1999. Big Lots opened in February 2003.

Rickel closed I don't remember when. The store was subdivided into a Pergament Home Improvement Center and a vacant store. Pergament closed and Sears Hardware moved in. Salvation Army Thrift store moved into the other half of the old Rickel.

PepBoys - They only lasted a couple years. Rumor has it the employees were robbing it blind.  Now its a Harley Dealership.

SOUTHINGTON:

Caldor - Walmart.

Big KMART - Closed in 2002 when Bristol Store Shut Down. Price Chopper opened January 2004.*

Zayres/Ames - Bed Bath Beyond/Bob's Discount Furinture now share the space. Once these tenants moved in they renovated the entire plaza.*/**/***

*Lots of people in Southington were disappointed Shaw's Supermarket didn't take either the old KMART or old Ames spot. As the Southington Shaw's is small and outdated.

**A friend of mine who is friends with the owner of the ShopRites in Bristol and Waterbury told me that they were looking at the old AMES Store to open another ShopRite. They decided against it as they thought the new store wouldn't do as well as the Bristol and Waterbury stores do. That would've been funny if ShopRite had taken the old AMES becuase the TJ Maxx in the Plaza was once a ShopRite.

***This Ames was supposed to become Bed, Bath, Beyond along with Bob's Clothing. However shortly after Bob's announced they were opening they announced they were bankrupt and sold the company to TJ Maxx.

New Britain:

Caldor - Became the new Walmart. The old Walmart was in former Price Club location in a bad neighborhood, where there wasn't any other retailers. It was mostly a residential neighborhood. The old Walmart is now a Webster Bank Training Center.

They closed that Wal-Mart? I used to go to Price Club all the time. Are you sure that was a Caldor (before Price Club)?

There is a great site (not mine) that has made an extensive list with as much information as he can get about old stores and what they are now in the Framingham/Natick MA area (menu of stores on the left:

Hi.  I live in Ogdensburg (Northern New York) and we have a lot of good stores that have closed.  Here's a sample of Ogdensburg's retail landscape:

Ames, Park Plaza (1971-96): Still vacant.
Kmart: Park Plaza (1976-90): Still vacant.
Gateway Plaza: Closed 1997; demolished 2004 for Lowe's.

Fay's Drugs: Park Plaza (1971-91): Still vacant.
Gateway Plaza (1991-2000): Became Eckerd in 1997, closed in
2000.  Became Dollar Tree in 2005.

Jubilee Foods (IGA): Park Plaza: Closed 1996, still vacant.

Great American: Park Plaza: Closed 1992, still vacant.

We used to have a few supermarkets in our downtown area in O'burg.  The original old A&P is now a workshop, as is the downtown former Chicago Markets, which coincidentally, was preceded by A&P.  The old Loblaw store later became a workshop, too, before becoming our post office from 1989-99.  It's been vacant since the post office moved out and is up for sale.

As for department stores, the Newberry store is a combination bar & art gallery, the old Woolworth later became The Surprise (a locally-owned department store) and the old Empsall's (another North Country store) later became a bank, and is now an accountant's office, with apartments upstairs.
