Translated from the french name: "Galeries de la Capitale".  It's a 1,360,000 sq.-ft. mall that opened in 1981 in the middle of nowhere north of Quebec City.  Back then, the mall was anchored by Woolco, The Bay and Eaton's.  In 1988, the center added a large indoor amusment park with many rides including a ferris wheel, roller coaster and a carousel.  The park is also has a 17,000 square foot skating rink.

In 1995, the first IMAX theatre in theregion opens at the mall.  Other large malls in Quebec City were closer to downtown.  The Gallery is located in a large parcel that leaves a lot of space for future development.  On that parcel, a Quality Suites was built along with a RONA-Entrepot (homegrown version of Home Depot). Woolco closed in 1994 to become the first Wal-Mart in the region.

In 1999, Eaton's closed and the store became the third Sears in Quebec City.  Sears also added a free-standing furniture store.  Wal-Mart later moved out of the mall across the street.  Zellers moved into the vacant Wal-Mart.

Today, the center is a busy shopping area.  The mall has 280 shops and services.  Many free-standing stores opened all around the mall since Wal-Mart built it's own store.  Pier1 Imports, Krispy Kreme, Golf-town, and canadian stores of Arts & Crafts, books & music, electronics, banks and restaurants.

You can see the track along side the second floor.  It goes all around the park and at one point enters a tunnel in a wall over the stores.  You can hear the sound and feel the vibration in the store below the tunnel.

If Willy Wonka had a mall, this could be it.

True...!  Here is a less spectacular area of the mall: the entrance of the two-level "La Baie" (The Bay), a canadian department store chain.
