Monroeville Mall, a large and storied mall east of Pittsburgh, has been listed for sale by it's owner, CBL Properties of Chattanooga, Tennessee.

The mall opened in 1969 in what was then the rapidly growing community of Monroeville.  I have not been there for many years (and despite living in Pittsburgh for most of my life have rarely visited as Monroeville is an absolutely brutal drive from the southern neighborhoods where I've lived).  Apparently in recent years it has been on the decline for the same reasons that initially shoved Century III onto the slippery slope, that being incidents of crime inside and adjacent to the mall.

Movie fans around the country may recognize Monroeville Mall as the setting for George Romero's Dawn of the Dead.  It also appears in Kevin Smith's Zack and Miri, and the ice skating sequences of Flashdance were shot in the mall's former ice rink, which was demolished shortly after filming wrapped to make way for a food court.

This is a large mall and if it cannot be stabilized it stands to become every bit the headache for local officials that Century III has been.
