The Portsmouth store managed to survive for a while in between two Market Baskets, Hannaford, McKonnon's (and two Walmarts, one Target and Bj's) all around it!

That space could be a good spot for for Big Lots. It needs to relocate its Portsmouth store.

I was in the Portsmouth area a few weeks ago after not visiting for a long time. Retail development has stagnated in the Newington/Woodbury Ave area and Route 1 South is seeing the bulk of new activity. North Hampton used to be a sleepy place for underperforming outlet stores, but things have definitely changed. In addition to Shaw's they also have their own Home Depot (which also has a location nearby the soon-to-close Woodbury Ave. Shaw's.)
