Judge orders run-down Chicago-area mall closed

A judge has ordered Lincoln Mall a run-down Chicago-area mall closed.

And here's a description and history of that mall.

Lincoln Mall is an enclosed mall located in Matteson, Illinois, located 27 miles south-southwest of the Chicago Loop. It was opened in 1973 by the Randhurst Corporation, anchored by Carson Pirie Scott, Montgomery Ward, Wieboldt's and JCPenney. Wieboldt's was the first original anchor to fade away, closing sometime in the 1980's. The mall underwent a renovation in 1993 and two years later, Sears opened in the former Wieboldt's space. Montgomery Ward later closed in 1999, shortly before that chain went bankrupt. A year later, JCPenney moved out, only to move back in in 2007, at the same time Target opened a store in Lincoln Mall, which itself was partially demolished.

The loss of two major anchors turned things around for Lincoln Mall and customer traffic declined and vacancies increased. On May 11, 2012, Sears began a store-closing sale at their Lincoln Mall store. A short time later, on June 1, a court-ordered auction sale was supposed to take place at Lincoln Mall, which at the time was in the midst of a $115-million remodeling project that included a multiplex movie theater and a four-lane road that would connect the center to the major roads serving it, Cicero Avenue and Lincoln Highway.

In October 2013, representatives from Matteson attempted to sue the mall's owners to get the mall closed. Looks like this may have finally worked today.
