Demolition work began at the site of the old Ames store Monday morning, in spite of the gray skies and rainy conditions. Yellow backhoes with large claws from Manafort Brothers Inc., Plainville, were tearing down the northern side of the Ames store building, located at the northern edge of the Torrington Parkade. Ames and the part of the building complex that used to house Jo-Ann Fabrics are being torn down to make way for a Super Big Y Supermarket, a future Lowe's and a revamped shopping center, City Planner Martin Connor said in early May.

I'm sorry to see another store go and sorrier still that we keep tearing down history in favor of generic big boxes.
