Title: Unknown closed chain quiz
Post by: Zayre88 on March 02, 2006, 10:48:57 PM
I often notice details on stores, signs and buildings.  Lately, i found out that two stores (Ames in Winsted CT and former Ames in Farmington ME) had the same building style.

I recently found two new pics of Ames and a Kmart posted in the message board with the same building style again.

Put together, it's easy to notice the same style of doors, walls, bricks, and shape of building.  They all have the same strip of small windows running in the middle of the front wall (even if they've been covered on some stores)

Then i remembered that Staples in Biddeford ME had the same style too with the brick and windows.  They only added a big top over the entrance. (They are using 3/4 of the space with a small section with the original color and windows left)

So here is the game:  These stores were obvously part of a chain years ago.  What do you think it was?

Could they possibly be former Grant's stores (or Grant City as the larger ones were known as). Here is a pic from discount stores of the 60's and the signage part looks similar.

It's also a possibility because there are six places for single letters and "Grants" would fit there.

It could really be that !!  The Picture of Grants also shows a similar strip of windows...  My guess was King's.

The chain must have been something, unknown what. the Staples in Biddeford was Rich's. maybe it was Grants.
