Title: auburn mall (massachusetts)
Post by: d_fife on January 20, 2006, 04:49:51 PM
this auburn mall was built in 1971 in a suburb called Auburn just outside worcester. the mall is old and has like 80 stores. the mall then had a 90,000 square foot caldor and a sears. The mall was expanded and renovated in 1997 and got a big 227,000 sf Filene's and the mall was remodeled and got a parking garage. caldor closed in 1999 and in 2002 became a filene's home store. filene's will become macy's. the kb toys closed a year ago. the mall has a good food court. man the malls around worcester are not that great, I guess because of when and how they were built and because of the salomon pond mall!.

This mall is only about 15 minutes away from my house.  They just built a huge strip center, "The Shoppes at Blackstone Valley (http://www.millbury.k12.ma.us/hs/mall/index.html)," in Millbury, a neighboring town, which is killing business here.  Stores come and go often.  Friendly's just pulled out of there and made way for a Hollister...  It was pretty cool until every name brand clothing store moved in.

Here's some history from my knowledge.  The mall was originally anchored by Sears, and Caldor.  Both were two stories and located at each end, with a large hallway linking them, which forms the rest of the mall.  In the mid to late 90's a two story Filene's was built in the center of the parking lot and linked to the center of the mall.  Filene's alone totals about 2/3's of the original mall size.  Two parking garages, one on each side, were built.  Filene's now is generally the only store that still breathes life into a rather small mall.  After Caldor closed, it sat empty for about a year, and the the space was turned into a Filene's Home store.  So now there are Filene's located at two ends of the mall, and Sears on the third.  I think it is going to be interesting when the Filene's close, to see if they convert to Macy's, or actually close.  Filene's is already holding liquidation sales.

I went to the shoppes at blackstone valley 2 years ago and it is a mega big box center and it had TArget, kohl's, a cinema, dick's, old navy, marshalls, tgi friday, applebee's and a section with barnes and noble under construction. the plaza was on a big hill.

I thought the auburn mall was dingy. but I heard it was renovated in 1997, but they did not do much except add Filene's and remodel some stores maybe. Maybe salmon pond mall also took business away. what is with the malls around worchester? greendale mall was worse and worcester commons was dead, I know I went to them last summer.

I have a ton of pictures fromt he Worcester Common Outlets, it's currently on the chopping block for demolition, they want to built a community center or something in it's place.  Nothing will ever move in there I believe, it's way to inaccessible.

Here's pictures: http://www.amesfanclub.com/imageserver/local/wco/

I don't have one. I only have a picture of them turning the building into Filene's home store. I am not surprised it had the rainbow logo and orange lettering because the mall except sears and filene's was outdated. but the mall had a parking garage. I was there in late august 2002.

Actually, from memory I believe it had the Caldor lettering(not the rainbow), and eventually changed to the new Caldor logo before close.

I remember the inside very well, it had that orange Caldor logo inside the mall, and outside, before switching to Caldors new look.  I remember the inside of the store having this odd mustard/brown type color scheme to it before they revamped Caldors look.  I'll have to scoot up there one of these days and get a few pics of what the mall is now for you guys!

No unfortunately I don't work at any retail stores...  I used to work in a chain restaurant, and I know that their development office took photo's of most locations at one point or another for insurance purposes.
