Post by: HoJofan206 on June 27, 2005, 10:55:43 AM
As the Dixie Square Mall was a great conversation peice (and had great photo's attached by many) does anyone have any pictures or comments on any other malls/restaurants/hotels, etc that we can discuss and have pictures to view?

Is anyone in here old enough/or have visited the "Boardwalk" In Ashbury New Jersey.  It is a huge piece of history as well rotting away.  It was shown in the 1989 movie "Beaches" starring Bette Midler.  Does anyone have any current pictures to post of Ashbury?  I think it is home to one of the last surving Howard Johnson Restaurants as well (open seasonally)

Oh..Asbury Park. Home of the boardwalk, Southside Johnny and The Asbury Jukes...and Tillie. Palace Amusements. This place was to Hew Jersey as what Dixie Square is to Chicago. This place opened in 1888 and closed 100 year later, on November 27, 1988. The park was demolished on May 26, 2004. This building was built in 1956.

Asbury is pretty much a ghost town, and so poor that there's the skeleton of an unfinished condo tower sitting abandoned since 1994 due to the city running out of money.

Another pic. For some reason Tillie is liked very much. So much that almost every trace of him has been removed from palace by "Tillienthuisiasts". Even from the side of the building itself!!! Noticed the caved-in roof.

Here are a few sites about Asbury for more info:

http://www.asburyboardwalk.com/
http://asburypark.net/home.shtml
http://asburypark.net/news/columns/anewday/index.html - (This one is from the site above but has a series of articles written by a (then active) council member on a variety of topics about the current revitalization going on there)
http://www.asburypartners.com/archive.htm - The group that is coordinating the restorations
http://www.homestead.com/savetillie/Home.html - The group that tried to prevent the demolition of the Palace.

Actually, the city wasn't the one that built that building - it was a development group - the problem occurred when that group went bankrupt and the city hadn't written into the contract any way to take back or regain control over the properties.  The group had taken over most of the boardwalk and even kicked out the few remaining shops - after they went bankrupt the whole thing was tied up in court for years - if they hadn't had that problem all the renovations happening now could have taken place years ago.

There was an abandoned building right next to our airport...the Westinghouse building. It was built in 1942 as a Curtis-Wright aircraft plant for WWII. In 1946, after the war was over, they Sold the plant to Westinghouse. Westinghouse stayed until they closed the plant in 1984, A year later, The Buffalo Airport bought the property and renamed it "Buffalo Airport Center" and made it into a business park. It was abandoned in 1990 and was very quickly vandalized and deteriorated, I mean QUICKLY. Within 3 years of it's closure it looked like it had been closed for 13. It was demolished in Spring of 1999. There is still debris from the plant visible today, near where the back of the complex was, right in front of the Flying Tigers Restaurant (A now-abandoned restaurant right next to the runway that closed in Oct. 2004).

I only remember seeing once (I'd passed by it many times before, but never paid attention to it and was too little to remember) around 1997, and the place looked horrible. Smashed windows, weeds on the roof, WIDE OPEN, and weeds taller than a van. I mean it was ROUGH

This was the only decent pic I could find. It was taken in 1998. I know it doesnt look too bad here, but up close it was ROUGH

Nice pics caldor..I cant believe they legally let people into an abandoned building!!

Flying Tigers, like I mentioned earlier, was an awesome restaurant. It was RIGHT next to the Buffalo Airport. You could watch the planes land/take off while you ate. Ther was also a hill in front of the restaurant that you could see the planes from..really up close. I was at FT just days before it closed and it was bustling, as usual. I was absolutely shocked when I heard on the radio on my bus that it had closed for good. Oh well. I plan on going to the vacant FT to look at planes (If it's not fenced off) I'll try to get pics. I'm sure the weed are pretty high by now, unless the property is still maintained. They were high when it was open!!

Does anyone else seem  to have a large quantity of abondoned/out of business gas stations in their town?  I bet we have over 30 emtpy stations here in Evansville.  Most were called Tobacco Road, Bigfoot, and Marathon's that all went out of business and no other chains moved into the buildings.

You should come to Pennsylvania. Tons of out of business gas stations. Sometimes they re-open or get knocked down for something else. Alot of gas stations near me are also changing there names. Like Amaco is BP now and Mobil is turning into Lukoil (which is a dumb name. I don't know if you pronounce it Luke-oil or Luck-oil. Just stick with Mobil!)

Don't forget Texaco! They either have all converted (or will convert) to Shell, will be abandoned (several former Texacos already are), or will become an independent.

I've got a great one to report and I will try to send in pics as soon as I can.  We have a Crosstown Sears building that has ben abandonded since before I moved to Memphis in 1994.  Apparently. as the company changed gears, they decided to close this great multi-story building that housed offices and some catalog areas as well.  It has been named the "worst eyesore" in Memphis and has some fabulous architecture that so dates it back to around the 50's.

There's been some talk of trying to reconvert it somehow to creat condos, but there's got to be tons of asbestos and who knows what in it and I can't believe that it can be refurbished in any way.  When I've been taking pics, there is alot of evidence that the building has been broken into many times and there are various notices of "do not enter" and "danger" and I'm sure that the flooring would easily give way if anyone tried to enter.

Has anyone else seen this building besides me?

Great Asbury photos - I have a few notes for them:

The shot - Another old Building (which is next to the Casino) was a power plant years ago.
Casino - The plan is to tear down the part of the building which is over the sand (in the photo it's to the left of the Boardwalk) and reconstruct it historically similar to match.  The rest of the building (over the boardwalk and out to the street) will be restored.
The shot of the pavillions (buildings along the Boardwalk) - a couple years ago some of those looked just as bad as the other buildings, so they have done a good renovation on the one with the green awnings.
People - Again, a couple years back you wouldn't have seen more than 4 or 5 people in any of the boardwalk shots.
Lastly - The "new" hotel in the one shot is the Empress - it isn't new (was probably one of the newer buildings in town - which still makes it 50's/60's vintage) but has been completely remodeled.

Now, back to topic - Here's an abandoned house just off Route 7 in Latham (behind the former Edwards store site - now medical buildings)

The town next to me has so many empty spaces :(

*A closed Eckerd, later a dollar store, now empty
*Empty Silo Appliances (a 2-floor store) --> i goldberg --> some independent furniture store, now empty
*Empty Coconuts Music store, closed a month or two ago
*Empty Caldor/Ames/Burlington Coat Factory (closed a year or two back)
^all the above are in the same shopping center too
:o

*An empty OfficeMax (closed in March, 2004)
*An empty Pathmark (closed in January)
*An empty Rickel Hardware (pathmark owned)-->Staples, closed 3 weeks ago.

Plus some smaller shops in the many shopping centers

Both of these are in Hudson (Greenport) on Route 9 - The first two pictures are right next to the McDonald's (in the 2nd you can see a piece of their parking lot) - the building housed several things over the years, I just happen to remember the cleaners.  There was a fire there about, I'd say 10 years(maybe a couple more) ago, and since the building has sat as you see it.  I don't know why the car and dumpster are there - there aren't any other buildings in front of it (it sits back a bit from the road) and I'm sure no one is using either building.

The 3rd shot is a former single screen theatre, which looks like it sits in the middle of nowhere - it doesn't really as to the left was the site of the original Hudson Jamesway/Price Chopper complex and to the left the original Hudson McDonald's (now a church after being an Italian restaurant that was always getting bomb threats!).  The theater has been closed for a good 10-12 years, but was open after the rest of the buildings had been vacated.

The first shot is a former Agway-style farm supply store on Route 9 in Southern Columbia County (never knew why it was considered Germantown Co-op as G'Town is more along Route 9G, but anyway...)

The 2nd (large) photo is old gas pumps (and part of a small building behind them) also on Route 9 - in that area there are at least 3 similar buildings, however this is the only one that has the pumps as well.

The mini photo stuck in is the cold storage warehouse in Albany (just off I-787).

The next 3 shots are all on Route 23B coming into Hudson from Route 9H.  The big and lefthand small ones are parts of a former plant property (a part is still used today by ADM) - this property stretches to the Claverack Creek (if anyone is in/familiar with the area, that's the creek where there was a landslide a month or two ago - there was a previous slide that swallowed one of the buildings on the plant property many years ago).  The 3rd is a house that sits on the "point" where 23B bears right and a street goes left toward Columbia Memorial Hospital.

The last two are of a building labelled "Lindy's Lunch" - this is on Route 9W South of Port Ewen, NY (which is just south of Kingston) - it has been abandoned for (I'm guessing here) a minimum of 20 years (I never remember seeing it in use, and it seems the first time I did see it it was already in a deteriorating state).

Going back to gas stations...
We have one abandoned BP that is one of the new ones, with the curved side of the roof over the pumps, an abandoned Marathon which still has the signs and is in the process of being gutted and has no pumps or pump-roof, another abandoned Marathon, which only has the building and entrances (no pumps), an abandoned Shell which is vacant, and yet another abandoned Marathon, which has turned into a BMW service center, and may be the only remaining one around here on which you can see the slogan "best in the long run".

That Caldor in Newington, CT is going to be a Stew Lenoards. They hope to open in Januray 2007.  As for abanadoned Gas Stations there's an abandoned one on Riverside Avenue in Bristol that the city keeps talking about buying. I think there's one abandoned gas station in Southignton. Over in the area of Meriden Avenue.

Here is an abandoned former IGA supermarket.  It closed a year ago.  It was a very old and small market.  It used to have an entrance in front of the building.  The modern one was added in the 90's.  The owner started to strip the building but went bankrupt !!

Mobil is still around, they never changed their name to lukoil. Lukoil bought all the locations in NJ, NY and PA.

We have a Lukoil on Route 229 in Bristol, CT next to Exxon. It used to be a Texaco.

Originally it was Karl's Mobil. (Gas Station and repair place). Karl retired and shut the place down. It was ripped down and replaced with the Texaco Station.

I didn't know Lukoil bought Mobil; last I heard about Lukoil is that they were rebranding Getty stations to Lukoil.

They didn't. They just bought a bunch of Mobil locations, not the company itself.

I got lots of pictures of Asbury Park, as I stayed in Ocean Grove for the past week.  I found out that the building to your left as you enter the Casino was a black-run concession stand.  And yes, they tore down the part of the Casino on the sand.  They have also torn down that arcade building with the creepy clown face and built a cafe meant to replicate it--complete with the face--on the same location.

I gotta get up to Asbury Park someday, especially since I live in NJ and I don't have to travel too far to get to it.

Lukoil only bought the PA NJ & NY Mobil locations from ExxonMobil.  ExxonMobil, as a result of there merger, had to sell or rebrand all the Mobil stations on the East Coast to Exxon, and sell or rebrand all the Exxon stations on the West Coast to Mobil.

Thank you!

A tannery, basically, is a place where leather is made.

Sadly, we can now add Value City Department stores to the list of those that have come and gone.  Can anyone give a someone detailed list of department stores that have gone under since the 1980's??  :huh:

Just happened to spot this post, and wanted to add:

Actually, the building that now has the clown face (AKA Tillie) IS a bar (Wonder Bar), but that is NOT the site of the original Palace (the arcade building), rather a tribute to it.

The Palace building was across a couple streets from the Casino, just behind and to the left (looking from the Boardwalk) of the Empress Hotel.

Most of the area by the Casino had been paved and turned into a parking lot as of last summer (this had been an empty triangular lot which was between the Palace and Casino), and between that and the fact they re-routed the streets a bit - the one that runs along the lake no longer goes right in front of the Casino, rather you have to cut over in front of where the Palace was (Kingsley St) - makes it harder to place lots exactly.

The Old Bristol Press Building 99 Main Street corner of School Street in Bristol, CT. After Michael Schroder bought the paper from JRC he moved the paper to a vacant store front on Main Street. JRC owns the building. The paper hadn't been published on the property in years so they didn't need that big building any more.
