Title: Vix Drugstore
Post by: Jag67 on May 08, 2005, 06:15:54 PM
my mom once worked for them as a pharmacist. All their stores closed on Sept. 15, 2003, including this one. This store was built in the 60's as a Tops (a VERY small Tops!!) and became a Vix in 1984. This store is in horrible conditon and is actually going backwards (what i mean is, you can see a lot of the orginal 60's decor under the remodels done later thinks to missing ceiling tiles, floor tiles, etc.)  After tops sold Vix to Drug Emporium, the maintainence of this store really went down, and it became a pigstye by it's last years. This place is in BAD shape.

Wow, the inside looks as beat up and unclean as my local closed Drug Emporium store. (This store was in a 50's Acme Market). It was a temporary book store a few months back, and Rite Aid is now trying to buy the property.

Drug Emporium/VIX/F&M (F&M Being once owned by the Pathmark supermarket chain) were all owned by Snyder's drug, which went into bankruptcy and dumped the three chains

yep, like I said this store really became a craphole after Tops sold them in 1999 or 2000. I can't believe Tops' stores were this small. In the 60's this was considered a supermarket!! What's funny, is when I was peeking thru the front enterance parts of the ceiling were missing exposing the orginal ceiling underneith and this really really ugly tile pattern on the wall. It was kinda funny.

Surprisingly most of the former Vix stores are still vacant even after years after Vix went out business.

If I remember correctly, I can think of two Vix locations that were in the Cleveland area. One was at State & Brookpark Roads inside an old Pick-&-Pay grocery store. It was a decent-sized building, and the store survived from the original "Vix Deep Discount" branding to the "Vix/3D Deep Discount Drug" branding. It closed when, I guess, the entire chain did, and is now home to a car dealership.

The other one was inside an old Finast store by Parmatown Mall. The Gold Circle-turned-Hills store closed, so Finast moved into the building, renovated it, and reopened as "Finast Super Store." The red-awning'd Finast next door became a Vix/3D. Later, it would become a Circuit City. Now, it's that one that got razed to have a new Giant Eagle built on top of it.

I can think at least four former Vix stores in the Buffalo, NY area off the top of my head

. Amherst, NY (Sheridan Center Plaza) - Was Freddy's Drugstore before it was Vix, Now Dollar General
. Williamsville, NY (Maple Road near North Forest road) - abandoned? (I didn't see any for lease sign on it)
. Williamsville, NY (Transit Road near Wehrle Drive) - Now Big Lots
. Cheektowaga, NY (Garden Village Plaza) - abandoned except for a Dollar General along with the rest of the plaza (there was an Ames store in there ;))

Where was the Tops/VIX pictured in this thread? Also what happened to it? It now has been over a decade since the store closed, so hopefully it isn't still vacant!

I think that Tops/Vix store was in the old Garden Village Plaza, I think it's been demolished. They had an Ames in there and that plaza was vacant for years.
