Walgreens seems to me the classic American chain drugstore. It has much more of a drugstore feeling than some of the other chains, though CVS is making progress in that area. I still miss the wonderful Walgreens restaurants, coffee shops, and Wags family restaurant chain. Also, the liquor stores. Their house brands are excellent in quality and the selection is comprehensive.

This is the store in Poughkeepsie (on Route 44). It is (mostly) free standing, although there are a small laundromat and hair salon in the right end of the building.
It is, however, an older store without a drive-thru (which could be added to the right end easily, and that's where the pharmacy is anyway).
First shot is the "new" free-standing store.
2nd is the "old" in strip store.
Both are in the Kingston Plaza (which is just off Exit 19 of the NYS Thruway and about the only "plaza" IN Kingston - most are out on 9W.
Here's the newly constructed Walgreens in Albany, on Central Ave at Route 155. It should be opening within the next month or so. As BillyGr points out below in correction to a previous mishap of where the second new loation was to be, the second Albany Walgreens is being built at the corner of Western Avenue(U.S. 20) and NY 155, about a mile away from this location. Albany has been without a Walgreens since the closure of the downtwon location in the 70's.

There is a second location under construction, and you probably didn't realize how close to it you were. If you had taken a left off Central (heading toward Schenectady) onto 155 and driven over to the corner of 155 & Western you'd have found this one (as seen below). Obviously this is in an earlier stage of construction. Should be interesting as CVS is on the opposite corner, Rite Aid is up a 1/2 block on Western and Eckerd (still in a plaza, not freestanding) is about 1/2 block the opposite way on Western! Of course, if you're checking to see the best price it will be rather convenient.
These were the 2 locations proposed when Walgreens first announced moving into the area (which seems like it was a LOOOONG time ago). I have heard of a proposal for a store on Hoosick St (Rt 7) just past the top of the hill in Troy (this is in the preliminary stages) - haven't heard of any others yet, but I'm guessing they don't plan to have just 3 stores in an area.

This Walgreens looks very similar to this one built last year in Webster, MA! Here's a picture I took right after the construction, there's no equipment inside yet...

Here is a store in the East Brunswick NJ area - it is off Route 18 a couple miles toward South Brunswick.
P.S. - Both Albany (NY) stores are now open.
Walgreen's opened in Southington, CT last year. They ripped down the old Police Station to build it. It's right at a fork in the road. Go right and you continue on Main Street (Route 10). Continue straight and you're on Old Turnpike Road. Continuing down Old Turpike Road you'll drive past WXCT Radio (The old WNTY sign is still on the building) where I used to intern and even had my own show for a while. (Another story for another day). This Walgreens is across the street from a CVS and walking distance from an ancient looking Rite Aid.
In Bristol Walgreens in on Route 6 in a location that was years and years ago was Mott Shoprite. (I think when Mott ShopRite was there dinosaurs and people co-existed). A new Walgreens with a drive-thru is supposed to be built in downtown at the intersection of Main and South. They razed the eyesore buildigns that were there - an abandoned night club (The Stadium Night Club - Once referred to on-air by DJ's of WNTY in their hip-hop days of having a dance floor the size of the top of a coffee table), a pawn shop which, relocated to a much larger location in Route 229 (Middle Street), and an abandoned Mexican Restaurant, which mysteriously burned down not long after they opened. Surprisingly there is not a CVS across the street. It seems like lately most Walgreens have opened across the street from CVS's.

I like Wal-Green's the stores are designed perfectly with the customer in mind. The stores are clean and the employees friendly.
I however do not like their photo prices but I have wal-mart for that!

The second Walgreen's in Bristol, Connecticut finally opened last week. It's located on the corner of Main Street and South Street. It has a drive-thru, but the store is not open 24/7. My digital camera is dead, so there's no chance of me posting a picture. (That along with the fact that I never go to downtown Bristol. I barely go anywhere besides work).

New Walgreens coming to Coventry RI. So now there will be a Walgreens, CVS and Rite Aid all on the same road less that 3 minutes apart. I do have to say they are knocking down 2 unsightly bulidings to put the Walgreens in and 2 houses behind the property. I will post pics when completed.

Thats stupid. Why? 3 Pharmacies so damn close. Are they all 24-hour too? :mad:
I don't know if the walgreens will be 24 hrs. CVS is 24 hrs, and Rite Aid is not 24 hrs, now they are buliding another CVS about 10 min from the other one in the same town, so I don't know if they are closing the main one or if they are trying to compete with Walmart, it is located right off Exit 7 on RT 95 South, we will have to wait and see.

The Medi-Mart chain was taken over by Walgreens in 1986. I know the former Medi in Darien, CT (right next to Stop & Shop) switched over to Walgreens.

Walgreen's is going to be demolishing its 22 year old Farmington Avenue Store in Bristol, CT at the end of the year and will be replacing it with a new store with a drive-thru that should be open by the end of 2009. In the mean time a trailer will be put on the property to serve prescription needs and over the counter medication.

The owner of a nearby Liquor Store is fed up with them blaming them for the dramatic drop in sales between 2008 and 2009. The new pharmacy has a drive-thru and that took up some of the parking in the small strip mall where the liquor store is. And they closed the main access road to the plaza for quite a number of weeks.

A 2nd Walgreens for Southington is rumored to be built on the site of the former Erika's Diner on the corner of Queen Street (Connecticut Route 10) and Loper Street. I was just wondering what everyone thinks of Walgreen's new in-house brand "NICE". To me it's as cheesy of a name as Target's "Up & Up" brand and Target's "Pfresh" concept name.
The "NICE" brand of soda taste better than their previous "Walgreen's" brand of soda.

It's a silly name, but the packaging change was necessary to communicate the upgrade in quality and encourage sampling thereby improving private label penetration. Keep in mind that by and large retailers make more money on private label than national brand merchandise.
I've read that Target is de-emphasizing the PFresh label for its enhanced grocery remodels. That label was always narrowly intended to communicate the concept internally to the organization and to shareholders; the remodels were communicated to consumers as "now with fresh grocery." Somehow the corporate PFresh label entered the public consciousness through extensive coverage in the consumer press. Just goes to show you how important branding is.

It's OK, just like Up & Up, Delhaize America's "My Essentials", SuperValu's "Essential Everyday" and A&P's "America's Choice". A&P was the ones who started with having 1 in-house name back in the 1990's.

Another honorable mention goes to the North Creek store across from Tops. I assume this too was an independent that became an Eckerd and later Rite Aid. I did not enter this store as I took this photo half an hour before the store opened and left for a store in Speculator immediately after.

Interesting building. CVS had a store like that in my old neighborhood in Pittsburgh until eventually they moved out to a new one built to spec.
Yes, Eckerd (in particular) did buy out locally owned stores over time.
There was one in Rensselaer, NY - they eventually moved to what had been a Rite Aid that had closed up the street, before building a new building out on the main road (that, of course became Rite Aid and now Walgreens).
One in Wynantskill NY that stayed as an Eckerd for a time but closed before the sale to Rite Aid.
Also, one in Saugerties NY right in their main street that also eventually closed (I think there they combined with an existing store on the southern end of town that dates back to Fays days).
Interesting to see that they actually kept some of them, but that may simply be due to the areas that they are in being smaller towns and maybe just not enough demand (or maybe issues getting permission to build a store as well, as often happens in these types of areas).
When a big chain buys out a local independent drugstore basically all they really want are the patient prescription files. My uncle had a friend who was a pharmacist who had his own small drugstore. Eckerd bought him out for a huge amount of money and immediately closed the store. They got the files which is what they really wanted. Plus there has been on ongoing shortage of pharmacists so in addition they offered him a part-time job at Eckerd paying $70K per year. So he got to semi-retire with a big nest egg at around age 50. What a deal!
My grandfather was a pharmacist and in business he really struggled. He was born a few decades too early it seems.
Walgreens has announced that they are closing 150 store locations by next August.
They will also be reducing store hours to cut costs.

A Walgreens near my home recently closed and is in the process of being converted into a Dollar Tree location.
