Title: Roy Rogers
Post by: amesman on January 09, 2005, 07:15:08 PM
Marriott owned owned Roy Rogers and Howard Johnson's in the 80's, and, they sold Roy Rogers, and gave up Howard Johnson's. I think they still own Big Boy.

Ironically though, the service areas that Roy Rogers restaurants are in, are owned by the Marriott affiliate, Host Marrott Service, or HMS.

Yeah, low-carbys.  I love their roast beef, even though they are expensive.  Actually, there is a Roy Rogers near me too, right off of Hwy. 84 in Sturbridge, MA.

Lucky, Roys was my favorite "fast food" restaurant until they sold them all in the mid-90's to McDonalds. They had locations everywhere in PA.  (McDonalds turned them into Boston Markets, which have almost all closed, a few became another failed McDonalds concept "Donatos Pizza", which are still open.) My local Roy Rogers became an Applebees around 1997.

The only time I get to eat there now is @ one of the Delaware travel plazas and it isn't exactly the same.
Yeah, I remember seeing many Roy Rogers in the past.  Now the only place I see them is in travel plazas off of major highways.

There are still a few free-standing ones left in MD/VA area and some other places.

Here is a pic of a new RR that opened up in September (Fredrick, MD)

I have heard that they are trying to expand the Roy Rogers chain once again with a new Franchise system.  Of course, FAI tried the same thing with Howard Johnson's back in 1990 and we all know how well that worked out.

There's a Roy Roger's in Newington on the Berlin Turnpike in Lowe's Center. There's so many restaurants around it, I'm surprised it survives. We used to go there sometimes.

Is that Roy Rogers sign in the grass (middle of the picture) actually setting inside a 1970's Howard Johnson sign?  Looks like that might be a former HoJo building in the background.
Does anyone know?
Title: Re: Roy Rogers

Very possible - it is a shot of a (now former) Roy Rogers on the Mass Pike (Marriott lost the contract to McDonalds a few years back, so now all the rest stops have been redone with McD's and their affiliates).  Check the page listed below - the picture there is larger and you can see the Mass Pike logo (hat) in the background.

http://www.geocities.com/roy_rogers_wb/history.html

Also from that page - this line:

1986- Marriott Converts 3 Old Howard Johnson's On Mass Turnpike To Roy Rogers (and this was probably one of the three?).

Mariott was responsible for changing many of the former HoJo restaurants into other businesses.  Then they themselves got out of the restaurant scene alltogeter.

Manchester CT was a former Hojos. And still operating as a RR. In fact they just remodeled and updated the location, so it looks less like a Hojo now.

Awsome fried chicken. :)

I remember very well. It is called the "Fixin' Bar" where you get everything for your hamburger, plus ingredients to make a nice salad. The Newington Roy Rogers I bet still has it. It was there as early as 1992 and even before that. I always looked forward to going there after Bradlees or Ames when I was small.

That's on the New York State Thruway mainline(I-90 portion) between Syracuse and Rochester. All the service areas on the Thruway between Albany and Buffalo used to be Howard Johnson's in the early 80's. Now, the buildings are owned by ethier McDonalds or Marriott(as well as the ones between Albany and NYC). And, only two original mansard roofed Hojo buildings remain, and those are at the Iriqious Service Area near Little Falls, and the Scottsville Service Area near Rochester. All the others have ethier been remodeled extensively, or demolished. Before being Howard Johnson's, they were something else, but I can't remember the name of the company(s). The service areas between Albany and New York City, were owned by The Chefs, and the one west of Buffalo(Angola Service Area) used to be owned by Interstate United.

There is a great stand alone 1980's vintage Roy Rogers on route 5 in North Haven, CT next to the Holliday Inn. Both inside and out it looks like nothing has changed in the past 20 something years. Double-R-Bar burger, fixin's bar, holster of fries and all. Next time I'm near it I'll try and snap some photos.

Roy Rogers is a chain whose largely left behind a lot of their stores in the early 80s. I'm pretty sure the Newington location is from the 70's, having received a few paint jobs at best.

I went by the North Haven, CT Roy Rogers over the weekend and I'm sad to say it's no more. I was just there in December and it was alive and well and fully decked out for the holidays with no signs of iminent closure. It's also been removed from the Roy Rogers website.

We used to have a Roy Rodgers here in Middletown, NY but it's a Boston Market now. I remember when I was little one of my friends had her birthday party there and I wouldn't go because I didn't like the food, and when my mom called the girls mother to decline the invitation, she said no one had said they were coming. :( So then I felt bad. She was a very nice girl. Well, she still is. She still says hi to me whenever she sees me and we haven't been friends since elementary school (we're in our early 20s now). But I still think that was an odd place for a birthday party. Most people who had their birthday parties at a restaurant had them at Pizza Hut, McDonald's, or the Ground Round.

Roy rogers of newington has officially closed. I just realized it today, I work right across the street. Dang Man! What the heck? :-( Arby's ain't even that great. When my mom was working at a client's house in Plantsville she stopped at that Arby's a few times and it was blah. I like my own roast beef and cheddar sandwhiches better.

So now the only Roy's left in Connecticut is the one in Manchester. Their website says they're opening new restautants and look for franchisee's so why are they closing them down?

Roy Rogers of Newington closed? That one's an oldie; must've been built in the 1970s. This follows that one in North Haven on Rt. 5 Loki was telling us about. Is the company in some trouble now?

After viewing their locator, the last remaining store in the state is the one on the Tolland Turnpike in Manchester, CT. In New York, there seems to be a remaining quantity in the upstate realm travel plazas.

I'll have to get down there and take some shots myself... if you see a black Honda around as much as the Newington Fair does, you'll know it's me. That's a prime location for a business... I bet McDonalds is pissed they just rebuilt their store...

I remember the location on Route 40 in Baltimore very fondly and loved all their food.  Sadly, once we moved to other states, we were never able to find them and I always make sure to visit one when I visit MD as they still seem to be alive and well.

I, for one, do not care for Arby's roast beef at all, but I do like some of their chicken items.  They are no match for Roy Rogers.

328 Queen Street Southington

The Bristol location is now Boston Market. The Southington location is now Wendy's. Not sure what's at the Wallingford location, but it's in Kohl's Plaza I believe.

That makes sense, since the current owner of the brand was formerly a franchisee and happened to be located in Maryland.  Apparently it did well enough for him to buy the company outright.

Elsewhere, the majority of them do tend to be in service plazas, but there are still a (very) few others.

They do pretty well here they opened 6 freestanding restaurants since 2011 with 2 being in VA and the other 4 in MD and they opened 2 of their express locations in NJ so maybe they will make a comeback in the future. Their roast beef kicks the hell out of Arby's it taste like real meat unlike the fake rubber deli meat that Arby's has and their gold rush ham&cheese and chicken is delicious but you need a sweet tooth to eat it.

I had a friend in grade school whose dad would always hold his birthday party at
Roy Rogers on Green Tree Road just outside of Pittsburgh.  The location was there
for many years, but is now an Einstein Bros. Bagel Shop.

There was also a Burger Chef restaurant tucked into a little cubbyhole in the basement
of the Cathedral of Learning at the University of Pittsburgh.  When Burger Chef went out
of business in the 80's it was converted to a Roy Rogers.

Roy Rogers was still alive at the time, and to mark the occasion, he was invited to be
Grand Marshal of the Pitt Homecoming Parade.  This brought out protests from the usual
left-wing campus types who complained that the choice was "too commercial".

I wish there were more free standing Roy Rogers restaurants and have the restaurants that aren't in a highway service station/plaza would have the food prepared in front of the customer, but the burgers and other sandwiches would served without toppings (except for cheese) and they will still have the Fixin's Bar with a selection of fresh produce and condiments. If I was the head of the Roy Rogers restaurant chain, I would just leave the "cafeteria style" with the pre-made stuff under a heat lamp to the highway services station/plazas locations!

As long as it is profitable they will probably continue to do things that way since it's cheaper and easier and their is less of a risk than investing in building a whole restaurant.

Here's a vintage Roy Rogers in Milford, OH. A few years ago, the restaurant changed its name to Roney's after losing the franchise. Although the original "covered wagon" sign was modified to reflect the new name, it was saved from this former location and installed at the new restaurant a few miles away.

It appears to be in very nice shape. However, the vintage Frisch's Big Boy right across the street was demolished about a month ago...hopefully this little jewel will find a happy ending.

Here is the new location for the restaurant shown above.  They did one hell of a job recreating a Roy Rogers - it's hard to tell at first glance that this wasn't one to begin with.  They even saved the sign from the original location. (And yes, the food is just as delicious.)

I always did like their roast beef better than I liked Arby's.

The former Roy Rogers in Green Bay, Wisconsin located on Shawano Avenue is being used as a makeshift storage shed for the KFC next door. It still has the door handles for Pizza Hut on the side entrance of the building from when it was a Pizza Hut delivery/carry out location in the 1980s/1990s. The building is located across from Subway and Motel 6 and sandwiched in between a busy McDonald's restaurant and KFC.
