None have open or closed in the Philly burbs. I like their food, their menu selection is good and their prices are average. They do seem to have a problem with keeping things clean, everything looks dark and dirty in several resturants I have been to

The Friendl'y in Webster, MA just sucks.  Literally, every time I have gone there, something in my order is messed up.  I went there for lunch today, I never got a side salad but was charged, and my vanilla milk shake was not even mixed...  Most of the ice cream was still clumped in the bottom of the shaker.

Friendly's will probably end up going the way of Howard Johnson's in the near future if they do not change things.

On my last visit in Lewiston ME, it took close to 10 minutes to get the breakfast menu, then we waited about 20 minutes after ordering to get our orders.  Eggs, toasts, homefries, simple things to cook... The restaurant was half full

The food was good, but the service really bad, and there was an ice cream machine or something blowing air at out back...

My parents and I ordered a new thing called a "crowd pleaser" I think it was 12 scoops of ice cream

yum!

WE GUESS WHAT!

WE WERE THE FIRST ONES TO ORDER THAT IN THAT RESTUARANT

WE WERE THE FIRST CUSTOMERS TO ORDER THAT new 12 scoop ice cream thing

I belive if you check the website it'll tell the name of it I forgot what it was called lol:insane:

Many Friendly's restaurants have copied Hojo's design with the dormers, and cupola, etc. Just another reason why Howard Johnson's was the pioneer of the hospitality industry. Without Hojo's, there would be no Friendly's, Denny's, McDonalds, etc.

This is a former Friendly's in Pittsfield MA (on Elm Street) - don't know anything about it just happened to drive by while doing some of these other photos in the area

Note as an identifier that the sign (on the far right & hard to read) has been painted black and the word CLOSED under it just as in the photo by Caldor 1999 above

the drive through signs were still there and you could see the faint Friendly's Labelscar, but it was closed for sure...
it sat there until 2003 when it was demolished for a frickin Eckerd:flaming: (for god's sake's we have about 3 billion CVS' in this area already!!)

Columbus used to have some Friendly's restaurants.  My Dad worked at one of those restaurants when he was in college.  There's still a few holdouts in Ohio.

I went to two Friendly's restaurants on my Mid-Atlantic trip in 2002.  Their ice cream is very good.  They used to sell some ice cream at my now long gone Big Bear.

Two of my nearby Friendly's (Barn Plaza-Doylestown, and Warminster) both have the dumb clock thing in the middle too and they are always broken! I really don't like eating at either of these locations because they always seem so dark and "dirty-feeling", even though both were remodeled in the late 90's.

I like the new prototype they are using though (like the other Doylestown, PA friendly's by the Acme). The place is really clean feeling and bright.

No I've never been to that one, and thats really too far away, especially with the gas prices these days. I would probably eat there if I was going in that general direction though. We switch off between the Warminster Friendly's (very small and we usually have to wait), and the two Doylestown ones, depending on where we are closest to.

I noticed that Friendly's has had different building styles over the years, much like Howard Johnson's. There first was a Colonial that went perpendicular from the road(see BillyGr's shot of Pittsfield, Mass). Then there was a Mansard style in the 70's. Then they went back to the Colonial style, only this time it ran parrallel to the road.
Title: Friendly\'s
Post by: BillyGr on March 04, 2006, 12:47:21 AM
I didn't do this on purpose ( I swear) but it works for Amesman's post above:

1st Photo: East Greenbush location on Route 4 (1/4 mile from 9/20 intersection) - This is the colonial facing the road style
3rd Photo: Former location on State Street (Rt 5) in Niskayuna - now a sandwich shoppe (Same design)
2nd Photo: Latham location on Route 7 about 1/2 mile from Northway Exit 6.  This appears to be the mansard style.
4th Photo: Former Delaware Ave location in Albany - This sits in front of the plaza with the Eckerd/Advance Auto(former Wheels) - it would be the Colonial parallel to the road (Delaware Ave is to the left of the picture - I am in the plaza parking lot).  Of course, in this location that's the only way it would have fit anyway.  The still have a store on Delaware Ave in Delmar - my picture didn't come out though - but it's a Colonial facing the road (Style #1).

This one was damaged a few years back by fire, which was the reason for the remodel.  It still lokks similar (though the tower is something new).

The photo is an (admittedly bad) shot of the Friendly's in Troy Plaza in Troy on Route 7 (Hoosick Street).  This plaza also had an Ames (now Big Lots) and Price Chopper (Now Save a Lot).

There was also a Friendly's in Riverside, NY (near Corning) as well as at the Arnot Mall in Big Flats. I have many fonds memories of having lunch there with my folks. They used to have a kid's meal special that included a sundae. Oh.. those Reese's Pieces sundaes were soo good. And the peanut butter sauce.. *drool* :P

The first is the Bennington location - on Route 7 south of the main intersection - a smaller, road facing colonial.

2nd is the Western Ave location - again, just below Crossgates.  This is a parallel colonial.

3rd is the Wolf Road location - this faces the road.

4th is the Central Ave (Albany) location - between Everett Rd & Westgate plaza on the opposite side.  I guess this is a parallel, even though the door faces the road, the main building is parallel.

5th is the Lenox (MA) store - On Route 7/20 - it is a parallel building (the road is off to the right of the photo).

6th is the Pittsfield (MA) location - It is at the intersection of Routes 8 & 9.  Hard to tell, as roads pass at least 2 sides of this one.

Last is the North Adams location on Route 2 - another hard one - basically parallel but with the door on the front

I still wonder if friendly's will open one in the bangor area? now waterville is the northern most friendly's. nashua used to have 4 but now has one. it is amasing the one in manchester nh only has 1. there used to be one in the old newington mall in newington / portsmouth nh. they had a round of closings like 4 yeras ago.

it seems that there are more friendly's in springfield than any other area because that is where their headquarters and resturants are.

I do remember Friendley's fondly when we lived in FL, but we do not have any in TN.  For that matter, I don't know if we had any Howard Johnson's either since I've never seen any buildings that look like theirs did.  Too bad...........

This is the Friendly's in Newark, Delaware off I-95 Exit 1 on Route 896 - a former HoJo's of one of the more modern (which of course are still old) designs.

The hotel next door is still HoJo's and has quite a few old features - see the Hojo post for more.

Several Friendly's in the MetroWest area of Massachusetts have closed in recent years. The location near downtown Natick closed in the mid-late 90's, and has since become a Dunkin Donuts. The location in downtown Framingham closed several months ago, and is slated to become a mosque. Lastly, the location in Framingham's Saxonville neighborhood closed around 2000, and became a Chinese restaurant. Friendly's did open one new location in the area, last year, in what was the only Bob Evans Restaurant in New England. I've seen some interesting uses for former Friendly's locations, in Woonsocket, RI; one houses a daycare center.

Personally, I've never cared much for the food or the service; the downtown Framingham location refused substitutions of any kind, and the food took an hour once to reach the table. I did get the privilage to meet the guy who creates the horrible Friendly's ads several months ago: I had no idea what to tell him :).

Friendly's. Good Food, but high prices.  Back in the 80s Bristol, Connecticut had 3 Friendly's.  One on the corner of Farmington Avenue (route 6)and Jerome Avenue. One downtown on Church Street. And one on Enterprise Drive across the street from ESPN. The one on Farmington Ave is the only one in Bristol still opened. The vacant one downtown was torn down and replace by The Children's Imagination Museum. And a couple years ago the one across the street from ESPN was bought by the owners of The Pie Plate Restaurant in Waterbury. They opened a 24 hour restaurnat there called "Luiza's Diner". Pie plate sold their Waterbury restaurant to Friendly's.

Southington used to have two Friendly's right near one another. One on the corner of Route 10 and Spring Street and one next to KMART (Now Price Chopper). Not long after the one of the corner of Spring Street and Route 10 closed down they tore it down an built a Betuccis.

In Plainville Friendly's was on Route 10 (East Street). In 1993 My mom had lunch with the host of a very popular Public Access Cooking Show there. She got me to appear on one episode. This Friendly's closed after they built their a new location on Route 372 (New Britain Avenue)  in the Plainville Commons. The Route 10 location is now Farmington Savings Bank.

The one on West Main Street in New Britain was closed for quite a number of years. Something moved in there I think, but I can't remember what. Must not have been something that exciting.

The Friendly's at the Meriden Square Mall also closed a few years ago.

The last Friendly's I ate at was in Brattleboro, Vermont. I beleive it was in 1999. Like I said at the beginning of this post: Good Food,  but high prices.

I remember eating at the Friendly's in Chestnut Hill, MA not too long before they had a suspicious fire there.  Rumor has it it was really the Legal Seafoods next door that had the fire but blamed it on the Friendly's.  That former Friendly's is now conveniently part of the Legal Seafoods in Chestnut Hill.

I also remember eating at the Hampton, NH Friendly's before a basketball game in 6th grade.  A friend of mine who lives there told me that drugs were being sold out of the back door of that place, not to mention numerous health code violations ended up shutting them down.  That location is now a funeral home.

Hmm...

If I'm not mistaken -- it is now an office building. They were tryinng to convert it to offices. That Friendly's  was mostly for EHHS students and the old Silver Lane location (my hang out) was for the Penny High students. The downtown East Hartford Friendly was the oldest (and the first to close).

I went to Friendly's for lunch before work on Friday.  (The one on Price Chopper's Property in Southington).  It's nice and the food and service was good. I liked getting a free sundae with the purchase of a Turkey Club Sandwich. The Chickern Quesadia I had as an appatizer was good too. My only complaint was that the soda was $2.09!!!!

It's a common practice in restaurants to overcharge for ~5 cents worth of sugar/water. My suggestion: stick with water. Save the soda money for a sundae or something

Friendly's sells, leases 161 facilities

WILBRAHAM - Friendly Ice Cream Corp. has sold its headquarters campus on Boston Road and 160 of its restaurants.

But the company is now renting the properties under long-term leases, a company official said yesterday.

Friendly has sold the properties to subsidiaries of Realty Income Corp., a California-based company that specializes in buying retail properties and leasing them back to the original chains under long-term lease agreements.

I'm at a Friendly's at least once a month if not more. I've been to both locations in Kingston NY, 3 in Poughkeepsie NY including the ones that closed on Hooker Ave and at the 9 Mall (where Caldor used to be) and also Danbury CT and Middletown NY.
I like the food and the prices are decent. A lot of the chain sit down restaurants are a bit snooty and expensive.

We are only lucky enough to get there if we are visiting family in MD as there are none anywhere near us in TN.  Since we were just there in September, I have to agree that I do not think that they are expensive and you get a good deal for your money-along with some yummy food!

I have always made it a practice to check things on the check and it is always a good idea to point out something that does not seem "fair" and, in most cases, they will take it off or make it fair.

Two of the Friendly's in my area closed a year and a half ago. At the same time, they opened a new one.

The Granite Run Mall has an AMC theater with four restaurants attached to it. All have died but Friendly's. Pizzeria Uno closed, then became Red Lobster, also closed now. There was a restaurant called Newport Grille, closed and became a local chain called Kildare's, which did not last long, now closed. And now there is a junky computer repair shop in this plaza.:flaming::huh:

This mall opened in 1974 and this part was added in 1987 or 1988.

This former Friendlys on Enterprise Drive in Bristol (corner of Route 229 across from ESPN) was vacant for somewhere between 10 and 15 years before the owners of The Pie Plate Restaurant in Waterbury bought it and opened Luiza's Diner. Thanks for looking so quickly. I guess the one in Wilmington relocated from Concord Mall. Funny since Brandywine Town Center (which is a mall) opened in 1991. The Friendly's there never opened until 2007.

The one in West Chester might be under "Chadds Ford", "Glen Mills", or the shopping center, Painters Crossing. It should be in there since it opened in either 1984 or 1990.

The one at Granite Run Mall was built in 1987, and is not actually in the mall. The signs at this one read just "Friendly"! I think that changed in 1989.

I agree, I've had breakfast there in July 2008 when I took this picture.  Like I've read in one article, the place was "friendly", calm and food was good.  Nice to know they will re-open, but that feeling might not be there.

However, the new restrurantit will be the new Friendly's concept, so I can't wait to see what it is.

Sure looks like it was one (even the lane with the arrow pointing toward it).  I've never seen one with a drive thru though - only a few that have a separate area enclosed for walk in orders (ice cream mainly, but other items can be ordered for take-out).

Maybe this building was something else before Friendly's?

That is strange, however I have seen one Little Caesar's with a drivethru and never another, so I suppose there can be abnormalities. I find it hard to imagine it would be for anything other than ice cream, but who wants to eat ice cream in their car? Odd.

The Friendlys on Newport Avenue in Rumford RI had a drive thru when they first opened. One could order from the full menu then they cut it back to just ice cream and eventually did away with it.

Friendly's in Norwich just reopened last week.
The new decor and styling inside is great.  I haven't been in another Friendly's other than the one on the opposite side of town in close to 10 years though.  Maybe I'm just used to the local drab style.
Title: WSJ: Friendly's Restaurant Weighs Chapter 11
Post by: retailisking on September 30, 2011, 05:06:35 PM
A typical Sun Capital scam: take a company private, load it up with debt, collect huge management fees then go Chapter 11.  The more things change...

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052970204138204576601232726499962.html

By MIKE SPECTOR

The Friendly's restaurant chain is preparing for a possible Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing and potential sale, said people familiar with the matter.

Friendly Ice Cream Corp., which employs roughly 10,000 people and operates more than 500 restaurants known for sundaes and hamburgers, could seek protection from creditors as soon as next week, the people said.

The Wilbraham, Mass.-based company would then try to sell itself through a bankruptcy auction, the people said.

A slumping U.S. economy has forced many consumers to dine out less frequently, crimping Friendly's sales just as rising prices for corn, butter and other ingredients drained its cash.

The company's struggles are familiar to many restaurant chains, from Quiznos to Sbarro, that have endured a similar squeeze.

Friendly's, which carries more than $250 million in debt, is in talks with Wells Fargo & Co. for about $70 million in so-called debtor-in-possession financing that would keep it afloat during bankruptcy proceedings, the people said. The bankruptcy financing would consist of about $25 million in new funds and other existing debt that would "roll up" into the new loan, the people said. Wells Fargo declined to comment.

Sun Capital Partners Inc., the Boca Raton, Fla., buyout firm with a history of restaurant deals, paid $130.81 million in cash for all of Friendly's stock in 2007. The private-equity firm is also a Friendly's creditor.

Some of Sun's other investments include Boston Market Corp. and Real Mex Restaurants. Real Mex, like Friendly's, is pursuing a debt restructuring.

Sun could put in a "credit bid" for Friendly's by forgiving debt in exchange for retaining ownership, the people said.

A Friendly's spokeswoman didn't provide a comment. Sun Capital didn't respond to requests for comment.

Friendly's hired law firm Kirkland & Ellis and Zolfo Cooper, a turnaround advisory firm, to negotiate with creditors and prepare its bankruptcy filing, the people said.

Declining sales, meanwhile, have triggered a condition in a Wells Fargo credit line that prevents Friendly's from borrowing as much as it would like, the people said. Friendly's has about $3.5 million in available cash between its borrowing abilities and cash on hand, one of these people said. That is enough for Friendly's to operate in the near term, this person said.

Friendly's already owes another $30 million or so to Wells Fargo.

Separately, it also carries roughly $225 million in secured bond debt owed to Sun, its private-equity owner.

Friendly's began as a small ice cream shop opened by two brothers during the Great Depression in Springfield, Mass. It later added hamburgers and started expanding along the East Coast through the 1950s and 1960s.

By the 1970s, the company operated hundreds of locations in the mid-Atlantic and Northeast U.S. In 1979, the Blake brothers who founded the company sold it to Hershey. It changed hands again in the 1980s before Sun's eventual buyout in 2007.

We used to eat at the Seaford,DE location on a regular basis but my wife began to like it less and less. Not clean enough and the service wasn't what it should have been. They still seem to be doing well without us! I seem to recall them having had a drive through at one time. It was mentioned about a Little Caeser's drive through, and the LC in Seaford has one of those, as well.

Since no other suitors stepped forward (and why would they when Sun Capital had the inside track all along) the only restructuring plan on the table is approved by the judge overseeing Friendly's Chapter 11 case.  With the sham auction out of the way, hopefully Sun Capital will invest in the brand.

Glastonbury, Main Street

Manchester, Spencer Street

Middletown, Washington Plaza

The Friendly's on West Main St. in Norwich was the one they just remodeled after a fire had shut it down for a while.  Crazy.  They haven't even been reopened for a year.  I can't believe they would go through all that trouble to practically rebuild a whole new restaurant, then close it.

However, the one on the other side of town hasn't been redone in ages and has survived the closures.

I'd include those in the Albany area, but it seems interesting how they did the closings - closing all the ones closest to Albany (Central Ave, Wolf Rd, Colonie Center, Crossgates, 2 in Latham, Western Ave, probably one or two I'm forgetting also) and left only the more "outlying" areas you mentioned.

Even the property doesn't seem to be a factor, since Troy is in a plaza (probably leased?), while most of the closed locations (except the two in the malls) were free standing buildings.

The bankruptcy process, in part, enabled Friendly's to get out from under unfavorable leases. I would assume that the closed locations had unfavorable leases relative to the amount of volume they were doing. Were any of the closed locations busier than the ones that remain open?

Friendly's has a new CEO - from Panera Bread. He's a Massachusetts guy and grew up with the brand. I'm somewhat disappointed that Agadi stepped down in February; he was a hands-on CEO who took an active interest in turning the place around. Perhaps Friendly's PE owners thought he was too associated with the bankruptcy and closures (which, truth be told, were baked in the cake before he came aboard.)

As a sign that most of these closings were only due to their company financial issues (not that they were bad spots) - 3 of the Albany area stores are being re-opened by local restaurants.

The one you mention by Crossgates is becoming an Italian type restaurant, while the Albany one (Central Ave) and one in Delmar are going into Japanese sushi-type and tea house operations (respectively).

Here is an article from the Waterbury Republican-American newspaper.

Operator of 9 Friendly's in Conn. files for bankruptcy, plans to close some locations

Republican-American

The operator of 37 Friendly's restaurants in Connecticut, New Jersey and New York has voluntarily filed to reorganize under Chapter 11 of the federal bankruptcy code, the company said in a news release.

Long Island, N.Y.-based J&B Restaurant Partners filed the bankruptcy petition as part of a negotiated restructuring plan that includes closing some locations and remodeling 11 others. The company did not identify the number or location of stores that will close.

J&B operates nine Friendly's in Connecticut, including in Bristol and Southington.

Dawn Petite, J&B's chief operating officer, said in the release that closing some restaurants is "a very difficult but necessary step" for improving the firm's financial health.

The former Friendly's on West Road in Trenton, Michigan. Closed by 1998, it is now Charter One Bank (and will soon become Citizen's Bank).

I'm not positive if this was actually a Friendly's or not - I have heard someone say that it was once a bank, but someone else thought it looked like a Friendly's. Anyone seen one with a drive-through window before...?

This, on the other hand, is definitely a former Friendly's.

The first one does look like it was one (even the sign is the same size/type and has kept the similar color scheme and style).  Can't say I've seen one with a drive thru, but it might have been (or perhaps it was a walk up window for ice cream? they have those on several of their stores here) or perhaps added on to match the building (after all the one you say definitely was Friendly's has a window also in it's current usage).

I just found out almost everything in this article was a lie and they don't even own the locations in Bristol/Southington. Both are staying open and will get an overhaul this spring.

The Friendly's in Norwich CT is getting a remodel. This will be their first remodel in well over 20 years.

The other location in Norwich had a fire. They rebuilt the restaurant from ground up only to close 6 months later during the first round of CT closings. Its still empty to this day.

Yes, there are very few Friendly's in the Capital Region of NY now ever since the 2011 bankruptcy.
These are what the closed restaurants are currently now (not counting the ones in malls):
Colonie (Wolf Rd): Smashburger
Guilderland (Western Ave): Crispy Basil Artisan Pizza
Bethlehem (Delaware Ave): Tea House Asian Bistro
Schenectady (Altamont Ave): Still vacant
Saratoga Springs (Congress St): Still vacant, I think
Glens Falls (Upper Glen St): Still vacant
Albany (Central Ave): Hokkaido Asian Bistro
Latham (Route 7): Denny's
Latham (Route 9): Still vacant
Glenville (Saratoga Rd): Neon Sushi

There were also Friendly's in Schenectady that closed before the bankruptcy. One on State Street that became Maurice's Sandwich Shops, and another on Nott Terrace that became Denny's.

They are currently doing the same with the Newington location. I went by today, and the entire outside was repainted. They should be reopening next week. I actually like it. It does look like they are trying to go back to their roots. The only other Friendly's I visited recently was back in January, 2013 in Avon, CT on West Main Street. It was a nice one. Wonder if they are getting the same remodel.

East Hartford needs to tear down the whole plaza (Silver Lane Plaza) across the street... It looks empty. It was a nice plaza in the 60s when I went to either the Woolworth snack bar or JM Field's snack bar after I get my allowance. I wish Target would come in.

Yeah Jim, that area is an eyesore. I'd say the biggest problem is their close proximity to Manchester and the recent development of South Windsor. Hard to lure in a retailer when it seems just about every retail store imaginable is barely 10 mins down the road.

I believe since the outlet mall is being built and Cabala's open, I believe that the town will decide to tear the shopping center and build a town green - like they did with the old Grand Union Shopping Plaza/ADP on Main Street in the 80s. The old Showcase Cinemas should be a destination shopping place.  Like an Ikea...

Good question! The sale includes the rights to the Friendly's trademark, which the restaurants will use under license from Dean Foods. The packaged ice cream is far less profitable for the restaurants than the hand-scopped ice cream, so I wouldn't be surprised if it went away. And besides, the Friendly's restaurants no longer have a vested interest in driving ice cream sales across all channels.

At least with this batch, it looks to be mostly the Western sections of the state.  Oneonta is the only one that is east of a line drawn from Binghamton to Syracuse.

Not that they haven't closed any further east in the past, but not in this batch (and at least some of the ones left there are ones known to be high performing locations, even one that was rebuilt after a fire a number of years ago).

Friendly's sold the retail ice cream operation to Dean Foods in 2016 (Dean also supplies ice cream to the restaurants.)

It’s because the building's lease expired.

It's the usual story - the lease was up and the restaurant was underperforming. It will be the same story with the rest of them one by one until they're all closed unless they file again and close the rest of them all at once.

This story is from last month, but Dean Foods is reportedly looking to sell its Friendly's ice cream manufacturing unit along with other parts of the company. Although the supermarket part of the business appears healthy, the part of the company that supplies ice cream to the Friendly's restaurants is losing volume as the chain continues its slide into oblivion.

Six more Friendly's have closed this month or are soon to close - three in New Hampshire, one in Massachusetts, and two in New York. The New Hampshire locations are Concord (North Main St.), Laconia and Manchester. NH will be down to four remaining Friendly's (North Conway, Concord (Loudon Rd.), Rochester and Merrimack.)

Sad. Augusta, Maine is in that list. A former Howard Johnson's location.

Anybody moved into that building, yet?

Last year The Amici Partners Group bought Friendly's.

And now they opened their first new friendly's which is a fast casual place.

I don't care for the idea of ordering stuff off my cell phone, its fine if I'm going to a fast food place in the drive thru but a place I want to sit down, I'd rather order the food from somewhere and get the restaurant experience, I guess I get why they are trying this though to fit in.

We get their pizza dough (including the one made with Shipyard beer) in the Hannaford stores down here in eastern NY state.
Title: Abandoned Friendly's in Manchester, CT
Post by: Everything Community on October 06, 2022, 10:49:21 AM
Friendly's in Manchester, CT (Buckland St. location) closed in March of 2020 due to COVID restrictions and unlike other Friendly's locations at a time, that location never reopened when restrictions were lifted. It's currently vacant with no plans at this time for another occupation in that building at this time.

Friendly's adopted the Express status at this location in summer of 2018 that renovated the building to reflect the test series of Express locations for faster service. Friendly's downgraded back to regular full-service status soon after before closing for good.

This is what that property looks like today.

The former Friendly's in East Greenbush, NY is being converted to a restaurant called Papa Brillo's.

That restaurant is run by someone who apparently worked for a restaurant of the same name years ago in Rhode Island, and this person has run the restaurant for the past few years on NY Route 7 between Troy and Bennington.

They were originally planning this to be an expansion but are now closing the one on Route 7 to focus on this new soon to open location.

Story was posted on the site for a local news station, WTEN out of Albany, if anyone wants to find it.

In my area of Connecticut Souhtington, Plainville, and Bristol remain open. Of those 3 only Plainville still serves breakfast and they don't open til 8AM.
