Title: K-VA-T Food Stores, Inc (Food City)
Post by: wiseguy93 on July 05, 2008, 09:10:07 PM
K-VA-T Food Stores, Inc. is the corporate name of a supermarket chain operating in three states under the name Food City. This privately held, family-owned company has grown over the years by expansion and acquisition. With 12 units in southeastern Kentucky, 22 units in southwest Virginia and 60 units in northeast Tennessee, K-VA-T is an acronym of its trade area: Kentucky, Virginia, Tennessee. The 94-store chain serves a current trade area population of over 2.5 million people and over 980,000 households. The company also operates four Super Dollar Discount Foods limited assortment locations in Wytheville, Abingdon and Hillsville, Virginia as well as Prestonsburg, KY.

The Food City banner dates back to 1918 and a store opened in Greeneville, TN but K-VA-T Food Stores real beginning was in 1955 when Jack C. Smith (chairman of the board), his father Curtis, cousin Ernest and uncle Earl opened their first store in Grundy, VA. Since that time, Food City has grown in leaps by acquisitions of several Piggly Wiggly operations in Southwest VA and Eastern KY, along with Quality Foods/Food City, White Stores, Winn Dixie and BI-LO units in east Tennessee. The company has also grown steadily by expansion into new areas, filling in gaps in the trade area with new units and always remodeling and replacing current units to stay on the cutting edge of grocery technology, product selection and consumer demand.

K-VA-T Food Stores follows national marketing trends. "In the last five or six years," Steve Smith, President and CEO said, "we have branched out into the pharmacy and fuel businesses." The company has 68 pharmacies and 50 fuel stations.

K-VA-T Food Stores owns and operates the 900,000+ square-foot Food City Distribution Center, located in Abingdon, VA. The company also offers customers private label choices under the labels "Food City", "Food Club", "Paws", "Valu Time", "Full Circle", "Top Care", "World Classic", "Academix", "Domestix", "Electrix" and "Easy Clix" through its participation in the Topco cooperative. A subsidiary arm of K-VA-T Food Stores, Misty Mountain Spring Water, L.L.C., bottles spring water for sale (over sixteen million gallons in 2005) in Food City stores and under private label for other customers.

Food City closed in 2000 in Norton Plaza in Norton, Virginia. This was once a Piggly Wiggly one of the 11 Food City bought from the Kennedy Piggly Wiggly. Food City decided to close due to lack of business. They have another store in Wise, Va which is just about two miles away, I guess that was one of the reasons for closing it didn't get a lot of business. It is now home to the New Norton Cinema which just opened in May. I will try to get a new picture.

Food City located in the Marty Shopping Center in Coeburn Va right off from Alt Hwy 58. This location served as a Piggly Wiggly. Food City bought out Piggly Wiggly in 1998. This was one of the 11 Food City bought from the Kennedy Piggl Wiggly. The Pig's main office was located right across the road. I figured by now Food City would have already built a new store, because they have most of the other locations they got from Piggly Wiggly. This location doesn't have a gas and go like all the other locations.

Shelves are stocked in preparation for the October 15th opening of the new Food City in Rogersville, TN.  The unit serves as a replacement for Food City's former East Main Street location which closed earlier this year to make way for construction of the new store.  Customers will get their first look at the 46,000+ square foot facility when the doors open Wednesday morning.  As their 100th store opening, the event marks a very special milestone in the company's history.

"As you can imagine, we are very excited about the opening of our 100th store and would like to express our gratitude for the loyalty and support of our customers and associates, without whom this feat would not be possible," said Steven C. Smith, Food City president and chief executive officer.  "Our company was founded on the simple principle of running the best store in town – a tradition that still applies today."

In celebration of the much anticipated opening, company officials ordered the construction of a steel support beam, bearing a plaque commemorating their 100th store.  The structure was transported to every Food City location, giving the over 12,000 associates an opportunity to sign the beam, which was mounted in the foyer of the new Rogersville store.

"We wanted to select a memorial befitting of the occasion and are especially pleased that our associates were able to participate in commemorating this special event in our company's history," added Smith.

The Food City banner dates back to 1918 with the opening of a store in Greeneville, TN, but Food City's parent company, K-VA-T Food Stores, Inc. really began with the opening of an 8,800 square foot (then Piggly Wiggly) unit by the Smith family in Grundy, Virginia on November 17, 1955.  K-VA-T later acquired Quality Foods, a 19 store chain in 1984 and adopted the Food City name, followed by the acquisition of 37 White Stores in 1989, 11 Kennedy Piggly Wiggly locations in 1998, 7 Winn-Dixie stores in 1999 and 8 BI-LO units in 2006.  K-VA-T has its own 1.1 million square foot distribution center located in Abingdon, Virginia, in addition to Misty Mountain Spring Water, L.L.C., a K-VA-T owned subsidiary.  Misty Mountain bottles over 16 million gallons of spring water for sale in Food City and other retail locations.

The company has a rich history in Rogersville, dating back to 1948 when they opened their first Rogersville location, a Super Dollar.  The store was the fifth in the Super Dollar chain.  In 1973, the Super Dollar chain began the conversion to the Food City banner.

The new Rogersville store includes the addition of approximately 13,850 square feet and full service Seafood and Meat Departments, staffed with in-house meat cutters to hand cut steaks and fresh meat to order.  A wide variety of pre-marinated and seasoned oven ready products, in addition to a complete selection of top quality meats that are all-natural with no solutions added and Certified Angus Beef are also available.  Expanded Grocery, Frozen Food, Produce and Health & Beauty Care departments offer a much wider variety and selection.

For added convenience, customers can visit the Food City Pharmacy, where a registered pharmacist will be on hand to meet prescription needs and answer health related questions.  Customers can continue to enjoy the services of the Floral Boutique for an assortment of fresh-cut floral and gift items, Video department stocking the latest releases and classic favorites, Bakery/Deli complete with a Hot Food Bar and Sit-Down Café and Food City Gas N' Go, providing top quality gasoline at highly competitive prices.

"I'm very excited about the new store and the additional services it will provide our customers," said district manager and long time Rogersville resident, Rick Bishop.  "The larger departments will allow for enhanced variety and selection and greater ease maneuvering through the store," added Bishop.  "I would like to personally thank all of our customers for their patience and understanding during the construction process.  I feel sure they will agree that this magnificent new state-of-the-art facility was well worth the wait.

Customers will be able to move quickly through the 7 traditional checkouts and one express lane.  The store is also equipped with four self-checkouts, allowing customers to scan their items and pay for their purchases unaided, should they wish to do so.  To complete the package, the location has been outfitted with an attractive new interior design concept, including open ceiling, department coordinated floor tiling, large department signage and a new store-wide color scheme.

Now headquartered in Abingdon, Virginia, K-VA-T operates 92 Food City supermarkets throughout the tri-state regions of Southeast Kentucky, Southwest Virginia and Northeast Tennessee, in addition to eight Super Dollar Discount Foods limited assortment locations in Wytheville, Abingdon, Hillsville, Christiansburg and Rose Hill, Virginia, Pikeville and Prestonsburg, Kentucky and Asheville Highway in Knoxville, Tennessee.

K-VA-T Food Stores, Inc. ranked 40th on the latest (2008) Progressive Grocer's list of America's 50 Largest Supermarket Chains, 55th on Supermarket News "Top 75 North American Food Retailers" (January, 2008) with over 1.6 billion dollars in sales  and 269th on Forbes Magazine's "List of the largest privately-held companies in 2007".

In 1989, Food City purchased the 43-store White Stores chain based out of Knoxville, TN, more than doubling the size of the company.

Whites Stores was founded in 1922 in Knoxville, Tennessee by Frank McDonald began as a chain of 14 stores and grew to over 70 stores. White Stores began developing shopping centers in the mid 1950s and continued the development of centers until the sale of the grocery operation in 1989 to Food City stores based in Virginia. After the sale of the grocery operation, White Stores, Inc. Kept on in the real estate business. Since Food City has purchased White's Stores in 1989, they have started moving out of some of the older store building thier own free stand stores. Here's a few pictures of the old White stores that became Food City and are now vacant.
