well those are the kind of stores that would replace ames. either there is already a wal-mart or target or the ames is too small for now a days discount stores is why ames is mainly now dollar stores. Another is dollar stores are growing and probably attract the same customer base, ames attracted elderly people! Dollar tree is thriving. Not all of the ames' are dollar stores though. some ames have become Ocean state job lots too though.
ames was at the low end of the discounter it wasent trendy liek Caldor and Bradlees were they had a dollor stroe feel to them and most of there stores were not so big so thats probley anoyuther resion why amny ames locatiosn became dollor stores
Here's a picture from the flea market now operating in the Napanoch, NY store. I remember this banner from my Ames, apparently they're using one left over to sell a bunch of cheap stolen cell phone crap.

that did not last long with ames as they started taht a month before the chain closed, well at least my ames (plymouth nh) did that.
