According to an article in today's Washington Post if Circuit City doesn't find a buyer for its company by this Friday (1/16) they will make moves to shut down all their stores.

I hadn't been to a circuit city in years, but my hub had to return a Christmas gift so we stopped into the one here in the Sugarhouse area of Salt Lake City on New Years Eve and it was surprisingly busy, both for a holiday (it was maybe 4 pm?) and also, for a Circuit City. I was expecting it to be deadsville... but they were bustling. This store is in a weird location, essentially the back of the store is  facing the main street and the parking area is nestled into a pocket of land facing all older, residential streets. It also stands alone, no strip mall, just a seemingly randomly placed Circuit City. Weird.

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=circuit+city,+salt+lake+city,+utah&sll=40.63063,-111.928711&sspn=9.084515,16.567383&ie=UTF8&ll=40.724787,-111.868962&spn=0.002216,0.004045&t=h&z=18

The marker is at the front entrance, you can see the parking area and how it faces all the homes.
2100 South, behind the store, is the main drag in that area. It is really a good location, intersection wise, just really oddly positioned, especially in person.

No!!!!! Why couldn't they take a crappy store like Marshalls, Ross, or something like those away instead! R.I.P. Circuit City, it was a great store while it lasted.

I've been playing with the street view ever since I posted this (day off and feeling lousy = all day online!). Such a cool feature! You can totally see what I mean about how the entrance is facing all those homes rather than the busy street. Odd store... wonder what they'll do with it if it closes.

Is the Torrington store by the new Target? I was home in June and went to the Target (which I still think seems so effin' weird there...) but I don't remember the Circuit City. I wish Google Maps had more of Torrington with the street view available.

Yep, it's in the location where Sears Hardware used to be in the Walmart plaza across from the plaza that houses Big Lots which was Pricebusters back in 1997.

They're done folks. No real shock here. No company in their right mind would take over a chain as troubled as Circuit City in such a poor economy.

Circuit City to liquidate remaining US stores

By MICHAEL FELBERBAUM and VINNEE TONG – 15 minutes ago

Circuit City Stores Inc. says it has reached an agreement with liquidators to sell the merchandise in its 567 U.S. stores after failing to find a buyer or a refinancing deal.

The second-biggest electronics retailer in the nation says in court papers it has appointed Great American Group LLC, Hudson Capital Partners LLC, SB Capital Group LLC and Tiger Capital Group LLC as liquidators.

Calls to the Richmond, Va.-based company and the liquidators were not immediately returned.

Circuit City filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in November. U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Kevin Huennekens gave the company permission to liquidate if a buyout was not achieved.

Circuit City to shut down
Court filing shows bankrupt electronics retailer seeks approval to sell merchandise in its remaining 567 stores.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Bankrupt electronics retailer Circuit City Inc. said Friday it has asked for court approval to close its remaining 567 U.S. stores and sell all its merchandise.

The company said it has 30,000 employees.

"We are extremely disappointed by this outcome," James Marcum, acting CEO for Circuit City, said in a statement. "We were unable to reach an agreement with our creditors and lenders to structure a going-concern transaction in the limited timeframe available, and so this is the only possible path for our company."

In a filing with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, Circuit City - the No. 2 electronics retailer after Best Buy (BBY, Fortune 500) - said it had reached an agreement with four companies to start the liquidation process.

The company said the sale would begin Saturday and run until March 31, pending court approval.

"This is very significant. It shows you how bad things are for the the retail industry," said George Whalin, president and CEO of Retail Management Consultants.

Whalin said management mistakes over the past few years combined with the recession brought down Circuit City.

"This company made massive mistakes," he said, citing a decision to get rid of sales people and other mismanagement.

What's more, given the credit market freeze, Whalin added that no manufacturer wants to sell to any retailer who doesn't have money to pay for the merchandise.

At the same time, Whalin said there's still a very slim chance that one or more firms that have expressed an interest in buying Circuit City could still buy it out of bankruptcy over the next few days.

"I wouldn't say it's completely over yet for Circuit City, but it's almost over," Whalin said

Went into the Sugarhouse (Salt Lake City) store and it was a ghosttown with perhaps three associates in the store. This was a Saturday afternoon one other customer. I was looking for a Newsboys CD, they had one! But the selection in the display cases was very sparce and they had moved them and made wider aisles. Obviously with less stock and no money to buy stock, the alternative was to eliminate displays. Trying to create the illusion that alls well. Very sad indeed.
What will become of the market place when we a selection of a very few retailers ? Price fixing?
Not a good start to this year for all in retail, Godspeed jack.
BTW This stores location could not be any worse, a store front on the back of the building facing a parking lot and exits to the residential neighborhood?

Well I guess you're right about the customer service not being great, but I have found some good deals at my CC and the store near me is very clean. And I've only been to one CC with absolutely horrible customer service, there's another one I go way more often to that seems to be better.  Its just that I grew up going to the store and it really sucks to see another chain close up. But at least Best Buy is doing alright.

Caldor1999 I wouldn't be so quick to say that. I think all the department stores are in trouble, in a credit crunch and troubling economy like this whos going to get hit the hardest? Expensive department stores, and Macys falls into that category. I'm not saying they'll go out, but don't rule out the possibility. The same goes for Sears and JCpenney.

Well it's a long story that began when I happened upon the phrase red barn as it the old chicken drive ins. There was a link to labelscar, deadmalls and then ames. Having worked briefly in retail, part time at sears outlet in slc 1300 s and 200 w. Just one of those great things about the internet. You can find information on anything and everything. This subject is addicting but more over heart breaking having known many who are now looking for positions to survive this economic problems.
So there ya have it, an old firefighter who has always had a part time job to get by as my baby birds have yet to fly the coop! Again hope for the best for all who have lost there jobs and careers in the past few years. Godspeed, jack.

In Canada, Circuit City does not have large stores.  Nearly all Radio Shack stores in Canada have been acquired and renamed "The Source by Circuit City".  Howeber, the division is also under chapter 11 but the stores are staying open.

No prob with your Circuit City Visa card.  It's issued by Chase and as such the store closing will have no bearing on your terms with them.

The Circuit City at Shore Mall actually was built as a Pantry Pride, then given the standard Circuit City treatment. Similar to the Office Depot across the street, which was a former Rickel.

Drove by the one in Meriden today on the way to the mall. Typical Yellow Store Closing Banner was on the building. Sign said they will beat the prices of Bernies. I agree the prices aren't like any liquidation I've ever been to.  More like a typical year-end clearance.  The store in Holyoke yesterday was packed but people were buying mostly small items like DVD's, their computers/tv's/stereos were marked down around 10% or so, but the prices didn't seem like a deal at all.

QuoteCircuit City name may live on with Web site
Liquidator Hilco Trading makes bid to buy moniker

By Sandra M. Jones | Tribune reporter
February 13, 2009

Circuit City stores are going out of business, but that doesn't mean its name is going away.

Hilco Trading LLC, a Northbrook-based liquidator that took part in closing some Circuit City stores last year, is in negotiations to purchase the electronics retailer's name and operate a Web site under the moniker CircuitCity.com, according to people familiar with the deal.

An agreement to make Hilco the preferred biddercould be reached as early as Friday, according to one person with knowledge of the talks. A bankruptcy court would have to approve the sale.

Circuit City Stores Inc., the nation's second-biggest consumer electronics retailer, filed for bankruptcy protection from creditors in November with the intent of reorganizing. It failed to find a buyer and began to liquidate its 567 U.S. stores last month.

Circuit City Stores Inc., the nation's second-biggest consumer electronics retailer, filed for bankruptcy protection from creditors in November with the intent of reorganizing. It failed to find a buyer and began to liquidate its 567 U.S. stores last month.

Circuit City To Begin Auctioning Stores And Brand
By Alan Wolf -- TWICE, 2/13/2009 2:24:00 PM
Update! Richmond, Va. — A federal bankruptcy court here approved Circuit City's request to sell or break its leases on nearly 600 properties, including stores, distribution centers and corporate offices.

Auctions, to be handled by Gordon Brothers' DJM Realty division, could begin as soon as Feb. 26 on stores slated to close by the end of the month, the Richmond Times-Dispatch reported.

Gordon Brothers, in a joint venture with Hilco Trading, will also bid on Circuit City's brand name and the domain name CircuitCity.com. The partners will make a stalking horse bid on the intellectual properties, after which other bidders will have an opportunity to top the offer in an open auction, Crain's Business reported.

Gordon and Hilco conducted the first round of Circuit City liquidation sales at 154 stores last fall, and were members of the consortium that acquired The Sharper Image in a bankruptcy auction earlier last year.

The latest store closures will begin a month ahead of the liquidation's planned March 31 cut-off,  as the fire sales are proceeding "much faster and better than originally thought," Circuit City lawyer Gregg Galardi told the court, AP reported. The remainder of the stores and properties will be auctioned off on March 10.

Circuit City was unable to find any takers for the leases to the original 154 liquidated stores. It attributed the failed auction, held after its bankruptcy filing in November, to the weak economy.

The court also granted Circuit City permission to sell defective or damaged merchandise via online auctions or through a third party, and to sell its two corporate jets: a 2001 Learjet 45 for $4.4 million and a 1996 Hawker 800XP for $4.5 million, according to the reports.

Circuit City Store Closings Underway
By Alan Wolf -- TWICE, 2/20/2009 2:01:00 PM
UPDATE! Richmond, Va. — Circuit City's liquidators have begun shutting down the chain's 567 remaining stores.

The first round of closings will conclude by March 1, and a federal bankruptcy court here has scheduled an auction for the stores' leases on Feb. 26.

Leases to the remaining stores will be auctioned off on March 10, court do[Censored]ents show, with the winning bidders to be determined on March 3 and March 13, respectively.

The closings are starting about a month ahead of schedule due to the unexpected pace of the fire sales, and should conclude within the next three to four weeks, the liquidators said. About $1 billion in inventory has been sold since the sales began Jan. 17, including 272,700 flat panel TVs; 53,800 home theater systems; 266,600 digital cameras; 79,100 notebook PCs; 38,700 desktop PCs; 143,900 printers; 62,300 camcorders; 92,700 GPS devices; 88,100 car audio speakers; and over 6 million DVDs and CDs.

All of Circuit City's distribution centers are now empty, and the remaining $700 million worth of merchandise has since been moved to the stores.

"Due to the record shopper turnout we've had over the past month, we're ahead of schedule in closing many of the store locations," noted Scott Carpenter, executive VP and operations director for Great American Group, which has been overseeing the going-out-of-business sales for the joint venture that also includes SB Capital Group, Tiger Capital Group and Hudson Capital Partners.

The consortium described the liquidation as among the largest in U.S. retail history.

This week the bankruptcy court also approved Circuit City's request to hire Liquid Asset Partners, a Grand Rapids, Mich.-based liquidator, to sell off all its furniture, fixtures and equipment from seven distribution centers, four service centers, two corporate offices and one call center.

In other Circuit City news, the company reported losses of nearly $21 million in December on sales of just over $1 billion.

According to a filing with the United States Securities and Exchange Commission, the $21 million loss included an $8 million impairment charge related to long-lived assets at the company's stores.

Circuit City's assets totaled $3.1 billion as of Dec. 31, the filing showed, and total liabilities were $863 million.

The chain's billion-dollar December followed a bankruptcy filing in November and the closure of 55 stores before Christmas. Results were also impacted by the crises in the financial markets, which stifled holiday sales for all retailers.

That was their plan, but apparently are closing earlier than expected since so many people shopped and bought most of the stuff left on clearance, the 2 circuit citys near me, only have a little part of the store open now, with most of the back area's roped off.

I need to hurry up and get a picture of my store before it is gone!
The Jo Ann Fabrics in my town was original since 1984 and JUST LAST WEEK they remodled the front and replaced the signs. I never took a picture, I felt like an idiot. Same with Brooks Pharmacy when that happened.

So I should hurry up and take a picture

I will miss Circuit City. I thought they were a good store. The service isn't as bad as some people make it out to be, I've also made plenty of good purchases there, and most I've been to were nice, clean stores. I'll see if I can get to my nearest store soon.

Circuit City Stores To Shut This Sunday
By Alan Wolf -- TWICE, 3/5/2009 12:30:00 PM
Richmond, Va. — Circuit City's liquidators will close all of the chain's remaining stores this Sunday.

The shutdowns come about a week ahead of schedule and two week earlier than originally planned, as the stores are "basically running out of inventory," Scott Carpenter, VP of liquidator Great American Group, told The Associated Press.

TWICE confirmed the report with Tiger Capital Group, another of Circuit City's four liquidators that together sold off some $1.7 billion of inventory in seven weeks.

"Consumers reacted to the top-quality product that they had and the prices we were able to sell it at," Carpenter said.

Although the last of Circuit City's stores will close on Sunday, the company's wind-down process is expected to last two years as a skeleton crew liquidates remaining assets, shuts down remaining businesses and reconciles claims against the corporation.

Our store will be closing in 3 days and we went the other day to use a gift card that we had found.  There were only a few high-end TVs left, some AAA batteries and a handful of CDs.

How sad!:(

Circuit City closed for the last time yesterday. A friend of mine didn't even know about their demise. He doesn't have a lot of time to watch the news or read the paper or go out and about. He saw it when we were going to the Meriden Square Mall today.

On Saturday, I went by the Newington store and it looks as if they are neglecting their carts. They were laying upside down in many spots near the Turnpike. It's a shame, the carts looked brand new and sleek. Would be good for Sam's Club or the like. Maybe they collected them on Sunday. I tend to think they don't care at this point.
