All of their stores i have been to are bright, large, and clean, but they all feel "old" and 80's decor. Their prices are pretty poor on things that are not on sale.
The store that I and the rest of my family shop at is huge and has a larger parking lot than it needs. The store is always dead as many old customers now shop at the Giant and ShopRite right down the street. There is a huge spot where the Fleet bank was removed and it looks horrible. I don't expect this location for be open for much longer.
there r a lot of then located near meive seen the befor but i never shoped in one before
I saw one in Yonkers from the train the other day when I went down to New York City.
Well, they make alot of money, but its not a store you would want to purchase perishables at. They are very strong in non perishable foods, and dairy and frozen... but their deli, bakery, seafood, and meat departments are absolutely terrible. They seem to be hurting now that Stop & Shop is expanding overnight on LI, people are really starting to take to Stop & Shop now. Pathmark's future is looking bleak. The only parts they definately will survive is the NY metro areas. They have excellent presence there. Their latest store decor looks much more modern than the red, orange, tan and white decor in most stores. I've been in their Bethpage store a few times, just opened early mid last year, and it is far more modern than the other Pathmarks. If they don't do something sonner or later about their perishable depts. ESPECIALLY the ones near King Kullen stores and Stop & Shop, they will continue to suffer. Even their latest sales figures are down...
It looks like C&S Wholesale, (who owns whatever is left of the Grand Union Chain) wants to buy Pathmark

how old is Pathmark's logo?
I believe it's from the late 60's when they started. I haven't come across any different logos besides the one they have been using.
Pathmark Sign.
Just as a side note - the first Pathmarks were originally
Shop-Rite stores - the owners (as part of the co-op that runs ShopRite) decided to leave the co-op and therefore couldn't use the ShopRite name any longer - this is when PathMark was born.

So they were originally Shop Rites? Cool! Never knew that. Are there some Pathmark locations that used to be Shop Rites? Theres none of those in my area.
Pathmark was also connected to the Rickel Hardware Store chain (in many cases, like Warminster, PA for example, a Pathmark and Rickel would be in the same shopping center or at least close by. I don't know if they were still owned by Pathmark (aka Supermarkets General) in the end or not. They all closed in 1998 and most of the building leases went to Staples.
Pathmark/Supermarkets General also operated F&M Large-Format Pharmacies, which were sold somewhere along the line to Drug Emporium.
I haven't been able to find Pics of any of the chains above.

The Rickels in Warminster (now Staples) was next door to the Pathmark, but the Pathmark wasn't part of the shopping center Rickels was in and still isn't. I think they should just make it part of it by putting there name on the shopping center sign.

I don't know - niether website indicates which stores (although the SR site says that they lost about 1/2 their wholesale volume when pathmark left) - here's the link to their history page :

Also - to add to the comment about Rickel - the East Brunswick Pathmark was next to one of these - it's now a (smaller looking) Home Depot but was first something else - I think it was just Home Depot under another name (kind of like WalMart with Neighborhood Markets)

Does the name "Channel Hardware" sound familiar? Rickel "merged" with them a few years before Rickel closed.

Pathmark's changed it's stores around in New Jersey a little. Some of them have new graphic interiors with red and pink stuff. Lots in Monmouth County have them, the Eatontown store, the Hazlet store, the Middletown store, and I think the Wall store, Howell, and I think a couple others around New Jersey have those interiors with the new style. Pathmark's even changed it's logo in it's advertising and circulars.

It still puzzles me how the Warminster, PA store is open. I was in there today to pick up a few things that were on sale. The parking lot was almost empty and this is during a busy afternoon. There was even more people in the Staples next door! (I stopped in there first) Employees at the Deli, Seafood, counters were just staring at the emptyness. I am not kidding, I only walked by 5 other customers while walking through the store. There were only 3 cashiers, 2 of which playing hacky sack or something, then a bunch more employees outside on a smoke break. Terrible prices too--and they still say they are hiring!

That store has been open for a long time and has has additions put on it at two different times do to expanding. If Pathmark were to close that store it had a long life.
My local pathmark (Warminster, PA) is closing forever next week...not suprised at all. Another one in Freehold, NJ is also closing.
I see this space sitting empty for a long time sadly. (Pathmark owns the building so it's unlikely they would lease/sell it to another grocery store.)

Warminster Pathmark closing
By JODI SPIEGEL ARTHUR
The Intelligencer
Shoppers who frequent the Pathmark store in Warminster soon will have to find another place to buy their groceries and fill their prescriptions.
The store at 700 York Road is closing on Jan. 27 because it is ?underperforming,? said Harvey Gutman, senior vice president of retail development for Pathmark Stores Inc.
?It's been there a long time, and we hated to leave the community,? Gutman said. ?It was a financial decision and had to be made. ... It was not made lightly. The store's been underperforming for quite a while.?
Gutman declined to be specific about the numbers.
The store is only one of a number of commercial vacancies near the intersection of York and Street roads in Warminster.
According to township zoning officer Tom Thern, in the Center Point Place shopping center alone, the former Burlington Coat Factory, Thrift Drug and a former I Goldberg that later became a furniture store are all empty. In the Town Center, adjacent to the freestanding 55,000-square-foot Pathmark, the former Office Max is vacant, and there are rumors that other stores might soon be empty as well.
On the other hand, Rite Aid is building a new store across the street, on the site of the former Drug Emporium, and a new Staples is being built nearby in Warrington.
Warminster resident Ann Fleming said she sees a lot of elderly people walking to Pathmark through an adjacent neighborhood for groceries and prescriptions.
?There's a lady who must be close to 90; she walks every day,? Fleming said. ?I think it's going to be a hardship for a lot of people.?
Adblock
Fleming said she too will miss the store where she has shopped since it opened in October 1970. ?Everyone there is so friendly,? she said of the employees. ?If I get depressed, I go over there to shop,? she said with a laugh.
Gutman said the store is one of two the company is closing this month because of underperformance. The other closing store is in Freehold, N.J. One new store was opened in Edison, N.J., last month, bringing the total number of Pathmark Stores in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Delaware to 143. The two closures will reduce that number to 141.
Unionized employees will be offered the opportunity to work at other Pathmark stores, and the store will either be leased or sold, Gutman said. ?We own the space, and we will be looking to find a new tenant (or owner).?
John Standley, Pathmark's chief executive officer, said in November that the company continually reevaluates stores and performance.
?We continue to evaluate and challenge all elements of our business to improve operating performance,? Sandley said.
During the first nine months of fiscal 2005, which ends on Jan. 28, Pathmark opened one new store, closed two stores and renovated six. The new store was a replacement for one of the stores that closed.
Gutman said the decision to close the Warminster store this month was made shortly before it was announced at the store on Friday.

You're kidding me right? Its closing!?!? I heard nothing about it! Its been there for along time and I've seen it change through the years since the 70's! It opened in the mid 60's though. I think it was the Giant and Shop Rite up the road.
Goodbye Warminster Pathmark, circa 1967-2006.

Yep, Shop Rite has really hurt them (which is where I will be doing my shopping from now on besides Redner's). But Pathmark totally gave up on being competitive in price. I know they just added a bunch of crap (a dollar section, small appliances, office supplies) to this store only a month or so ago--obviously this was a recent decision.
(I do think Pathmark had a better layout and lighting than the SuperG/Shop n Save/Shop Rite store currently has)
The article says the Pathmark opened in Oct, 1970, but you are saying the store is even older than that? (If so, it was probably once a Shop Rite store before "Pathmark" (Supermarkets General Inc.) broke away from using the Shop Rite banner and started using the Pathmark name). Kind of ironic.
In all of Pathmark's recent closings, there is a Shop Rite only a few miles away, if not in the same town.
There are too many empty spots in Warminster right now. (Not to mention there will soon be the empty old Rite Aid and i'm assuming the Warminster Staples (Rickel--once owned by Pathmark) will also be closing when the Warrington store opens.

Warminster Pa. Pathmark. Opened about 1967. Closed 2006. This is during there closing in January 2006. Additions were put on the building at two different times. It now sits abandon without the cars and signs.
Another view.
Actually, it closed up by the end of January. I met some people that used to work there that all told me the store was pretty disgusting--at least the back parts. I doubt the space will ever house another supermarket though due to all the competition in the area. Nice pics!
It will probebly end up rotting there or be knocked down. The Staples next door to the left moved and now its just barren over there. I go to the diner across from there and jus look at the closed Pathmark while I eat. Its been open since I was born and now its closed. I'll have to get some pictures of it closed. The signs are gone and its dark inside. Note: My old next door neighbor was assisstant manager at the Pathmark since 1975. He was transferred to another Pathmark.
Are you sure the last addition was in 1991? I was sure it was 1997 because I remember going in there and everything was torn apart and most of the ceiling was exposed with temporary lights and things everywhere. I think thats when the short-lived bank branch was added. Anyway, that whole area is just empty, from the old Rite Aid and the Office Max..
I wouldn't suprised if the Petco goes out soon as well because that store is just plain nasty and never busy. And now with Wegmans and a Super Wal-Mart, good luck in getting another grocery or similar business to take a chance.
But what else could even open in the area? We have everything pretty much nearby--and many companies arent expanding in this kind of economy. btw, i love that diner!

Maybe it was 1997. I remember it was in the nineties but I just can't remember the exact year. Sometime around when they were expanding the Acme in the Village Mall in Horsham, but that was in 1994. Yes, the diner is good. Perkins reminds me of Denny's. I miss them. That PetCo was formely a Genuardi's that opened in the 60's. I wish it were still there. I really liked it. Genuardi's went downhill when Safeway bought them. The Pathmark is a pretty big building and has a big parking lot. I just don't know what will happen to it.

A&P is in better shape than it was, but I think acquiring Pathmark will only set them back. Pathmark is a money-loser, and was in bankruptcy a few years back. Their stores are going to need lots of work to modernize them up to the newest A&P standards, plus there is lots of overlap in NJ where both chains are based out of.

Text of really nice stores, but the majority are run down, tired, understaffed stores. Most Waldbaum's you go into are not busy.. EVER. They are way overpriced... and if you go to a store that has self-checkouts then you can count on only 1 or 2 full service registers being open and waiting on line for 10-20 minutes to buy like 2 things.
It seems like Pathmark has been around forever at the same locations... FOREVER. There aren't so many Pathmarks on LI as there used to be. They've freshened them up quite a bit and have improved perishables (something they really need to do.. and keep doing, because their meat depts. are gross). They are all large & updated stores and unlike Waldbaum's, people shop there.... and not just for sale items. If this acquistion did go through, it would only make sense for A&P to keep the PM locations and dump the Waldbaum stores in those areas. But, I do not see A&P succeeding integrating the stores.... all banners A&P runs, most follow the same marketing styles, same advertising styles, same lousy service, and if you walked into a Super Fresh or an A&P or a Waldbaum's, if it wasn't for the name on the building you probably would not even be able to tell which store was which. If they decide to keep the PM name and do that, they're history. PM is very aggressive with there ads and are known for them.. Waldbaums is definately not.
Right now on LI.. the clear supermarket leader is definately Stop & Shop, although they're not as good as they used to be.
And as for King Kullen.. I don't understand why that company even bothers keep 75% of there stores open, because they're ghost towns.
That was a lot of continuous rambling... Sorry about that :)

Stop & Shop is the leader of the Northeast and it's no mystery why. Their newest store models are top-notch, they feel vital, well-stocked, decent prices - personally my favorite supermarket and quality produce as well. I don't think any market has the clout to compete with S&S; they're like the Wal-Mart of supermarkets. The closest would be Price Chopper; who makes up for having a decent bakery department as well as competitive prices. They will continue to expand as it has been these past few years.
I hear Wegman's is a quality supermarket which satisfies lots of New Yorkers, otherwise its Pathmark (reportedly too high priced), King Kullen, Price Chopper.
Personally, I believe Market Basket (Mass and New Hampshire-centric) are the worst band of supermarket chains. They're dingy, outdated, often dirty, and their bakery is a joke. They will soon be taken by S&S in those respective areas.

Nick there are a few A&Ps in Connecticut known as A&P Superfood Mart. For some
stupid reason they rebranded Super Foodmart A&P Super Foodmart Several years ago. There are 12, tough I believe some are technically still known as Waldbaums. http://superfoodmartne.com/our_locations.asp?display=all&return_location=
They have regular A&P's in New York State and New Jersey.

I must disagree with you on 2 ends one factual and another
opinional
first my opine. Pathmark is'nt THAT bad on Bakery. I like their donuts. and there are a lot of folks i know who'd disagree with you on their deli. (even though they don't sell Boar's Head)
Second of all, Pathmark has not been profitable in recent years, the company has just begun to turn things around. prompting A+P 's recent puchase. they need a big overhaul and fresh thinking. Their stores always had a boxy, uniform format and though many think this has been a selling point, it can't fly any longer in today's market. In my area (Greater Trenton NJ/ Suburban PA) Pathmark once had four LARGE super stores- Ewing NJ, Hamilton NJ,Princeton NJ, and Fairless Hils PA now only the Fairless Hills superstore has survived. (the Princeton one is now Whole Foods and the others are now vacant). to quote an old slogan of theirs' A+P needs to take a "fresh look" at Pathmark and breathe some new life into this chain.

The original home of my Fairless Hills (Penna.) Pathmark(one of the original Pathmarks) was once a Shop Rite owned by PTK's predecessor company General Supermarkets (which was once the largest Shop Rite franchisor) It was remodeled and expanded sometime in the late 70's-early 80's to 46,000 square feet and added a bakery and pharmacy. It also had a Pathmark Gas station. In the 70's or 80's Pathmark sold its' gas stations to Getty . Getty became Lukoil sometime around 2001 and the fairless hills station is now a full service Lukoil.
The Pathmark moved in 1994 to a former Channel Home Center at the other end of the plaza. The when they took off the old PTK sign, it revealed some of the old garish yellow "Shop Rite" sign with all letters but the red "O" "P' "R"
and "I" painted over. Part of the space was later used as a temporary home for Eckerd Drugs while they built a new megastore infront of the old supermarket space. Today the site remains vacant.

DISCLAIMER
(this is not speculation or fact-only my personal opine)
If there's none nearby. I sense that that whole center might be demolished and turned into either a Walmart or Target. With all that empty space, why leave it hanging.

I used to work in Pathmark in Weehawken, NJ. You had to go into a mall to get in there. The whole front of the store, the register area looked out into the hallway of the mall. They had regular lanes, and bag your own, which I was usually on those registers. I worked there about 2 months before I moved to Pennsylvania. I liked working there. You had to walk a whole 10 feet from your register to go smoke a cigarette. They still allowed smoking inside the mall then. This was summer of 98. It wasn't dirty, was a great place, nice and clean, and HUGE. Not sure if it's still there though. It's where George Clooney crashed his motorcycle last month.

There is a similar set up at the Pathmark in Avenel, NJ (Woodbridge area - on Rt 35) - they have several smaller stores (a $ store, pizza place and 2 or 3 others) along a hallway after you enter the front doors. Eventually, at the back, the hall curves left and there's the Pathmark checkouts.
Wonder if this was something new they tried at one point, or maybe a small chain they took over in the past?
I'm not sure. I wasn't big into retail history until recently...it's an interesting concept though. We didn't have much threat of theft there, being we looked out into the mall, there was a dollar store, a lawyer's office, and a doctor...

Another former Pathmark that was also a Shop Rite was located at Bustelton Avenue and Bleigh Street, in Philadelphia, Pa. This Shop Rite/Pathmark closed in 1984 and was sub-divided by Pep Boys (a auto retailer) and Budco Theatres Inc. into a Pep Boys/Budco Orleans Theatre auditorium #5 to 8. (The original #1 to 4 were still in the original William Goldman's Orleans Theatre building).
On 9/3/2007, AMC Theatres (who acquired Budco in 1987), closed the Orleans 8 Theatre. The AMC/Budco/Goldman's Orleans Theatre #1 to 4 building has been demolished, and eventually the Pep Boys/Orleans #5 to 8 (former Pathmark) building will be demolished and replaced by a Target.

A&P to Reveal 'Price Impact' Pathmark Prototypes
Apr 28, 2008 6:00 AM
MONTVALE, N.J. — A&P is readying a new "price impact" prototype it will roll out in two New Jersey Pathmark locations in May, sources told SN. The new formats, targeted for existing Pathmark stores in Edison and Irvington, will emphasize a low-price positioning but offer more than 20,000 SKUs and include elements inspired by European hypermarkets. Company officials are expected to reveal additional details about the new formats in an earnings conference call scheduled for Tuesday. A&P acquired Pathmark last year.
I wonder what they have planned for this new design?
What I just read, the first of the new Pathmark "Price Impact" store opened. It it under the "Pathmark Sav-A-Center" name.
Take it for A&P to find a way to re-use the "Sav-A-Center" with Pathmark a year and a half after leaving the New Orleans market.
The Edison store has almost completed its conversion to a Pathmark Sav-A-Center. The outdoor signage went up yesterday, and the renovation of the inside of the store is mostly done. It's definitely a much-needed freshening up of the store's look, and the emphasis on value should work well for the chain.
Pathmark will have 24 more "Pathmark Sav-A-Center" stores, all in the Philadelphia area, by converting all 16 "Pathmark Super Center" stores and 8 of the "Super Fresh Super Store", "Superfresh" and "Super Fresh Food Market" to the "Pathmark Sav-A-Center" name. :yup:
Which 8 Superfresh locations will be switched has yet to be determined, but all of the Superfresh stores in DE, DC, MD and NJ will still be "Superfresh"

Seems to be a good move. Superfresh has awful prices, and Pathmarks weren't real great either, but this seems like a good move, especially with the poor economy.
(It looks like the Pathmark store brand is being phased out as well--replaced with A&P's own "America's Choice".)
There are now 5 Pathmark Sav-a-Center locations

- Irvington, NJ
- US Route 1, Edison, NJ

- 42 South 69th Street, Upper Darby, PA

A 6th one is under renovations at the Super Fresh Super Store, set to open as Pathmark Sav-A-Center in October, the day after the Pathmark Super Center in Bensalem closes.

They've already phased most of the Pathmark store brand out for America's Choice. The stuff that seems to remain usually have no AC equivalent.

It seems that the Pathmark ads has all the Pathmark stores in PA, NJ, DE, and NY as "Pathmark Sav-A-Center" now
Are all Pathmarks becoming Sav-a-Center now? Look at the logo on www.pathmark.com
Yeah, it appears that way.
And to clear up any confusion one may have, I believe its pronounced "Save A Center" (That's how their voice mail says it)
Bit its a shame cause the one Pathmark kinda close to me on frankford ave in ne philly, renovated the inside 2 years ago or so, and I thought they did a nice job, this picture isn't of the paricular store, but you get the idea (The picture if from underconsideration.com)
But nope months ago they changed it to Pathmark sav-a-center.
and changed the walls to the nig lettering saying whats there and all, with basic colors and everything. so on that aspect I say downgrade.

I believe all the Pathmark ads will say "Pathmark Sav-a-Center", but, as far as the actual stores themselves, only the Philadelphia area, Irvington, NJ, and Edison NJ Pathmark stores actually will have the "Pathmark Sav-A-Center" signs. There are also 1 or 2 A&P Fresh stores that sill says "A&P Sav-A-Center" on their buildings.
Well that really sucks. I was in the Edgewater NJ Pathmark on Saturday. It was remodeled a year or two ago with the new upscale decor... 59th Street Deli, Chelsea Bakery, Bistro, cafe, beautiful upgrade to the Produce dept. Now it's being changed over to a Sav-a-center and looks absolutely ridiculous. The new decorative aisle signs have all been removed and replaced with the cheap and tacky sav-a-center signs. Everywhere you look it says "SAVE". I mean EVERYWHERE you look. It's obnoxious. Just as Pathmark was getting a little classier, they're now heading right back to the craptastic stores they've always been.

I really don't know..this direction may be a good thing for Pathmark. I think they realized that they are not good at the high-end thing, so are trying to emphasize low prices.. They are going back to their earlier times of the 80's and 90's when they were much more successful and aggressive in their pricing. And if you don't have the lowest prices in this economy, you are sunk.

I think that all of these aggressive price cuts are going to hurt them in the long run, their regular prices are very high but their sale prices are good... I'm not sure how they are going to make money on just selling sale items... between Pathmark and Waldbaum's.... Waldbaum's also offers a good ad every week but do all of your shopping there you will spend a fortune... just like Pathmark. Stop & Shop doesn't always have the best ad, but it is decent and their regular prices are pretty reasonable. I think they have the right mix and are able to make money because they aren't all about promotions. King Kullen is priced out of this world and although they might have an ok ad every week most of their stores are ghost towns... which just comes to show you how most people view them, just my thoughts.
The Edgewater Pathmark is the only one I've been in that has this new upscale decor remodel package. Not sure how many others have it but I guess it's been stopped dead in it's tracks now in favor of the new Sav-a-center look. Posting these images in case other Pathmark fans haven't seen this look.

I think Shoprite has the best combination of regular prices and sales, but:
1) They have very few (5, I think) locations on LI. They were in talks to open one in East Patchogue, but the proposed Walmart spooked them.
2) Their selection isn't the greatest.
In the absence of SR, I'd say S&S has the best selection and best regular prices (excluding places like Target, but as there are no Super Targets or Super Walmarts on LI, it doesn't really count).

just looked on google maps, Pathmark in Middletown NJ looks EXACTLY the same as when I was growing up there, 20+ years ago. My mom made me bag her groceries all the time...hence my future being sealed in retail until now...just says PATHMARK on the front of it, same old signage that I grew up looking at. Maybe a new layer of paint on the building, but it's the same color...
The only Pathmark that got the "Sav-A-Center" singage are the ones in the Philadelphia area, Irvington, NJ, Edison, NJ and Newark, DE, including the Pathmark Sav-A-Centers that were origionally Super Fresh Super Stores.

The Pathmark nearest to me has Sav-A-Center signage inside the store plastered over the designs that EddieJ posted (rather cheaply, I might add), and it's not in the Philly area. It's in Patchogue, NY on Long Island.
It doesn't have the Sav-A-Center signage outside, though.
I'm guessing that A&P is now converting all the Pathmark Super Centers over to the "Sav-A-Center" format now. They started with Irvington, NJ, then Edison, NJ, then Philadelphia area (a combo of the Pathmark Super Centers and most of the Super Fresh Super Stores), and then the newspaper ads.

The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co. told employees Tuesday that it would close three Pathmark supermarkets, in Cherry Hill, Camden, and Edgewater Park, in 60 days. Union leaders said about 300 clerks, stockers, cashiers, seafood, bakery, and meat and deli workers will lose their jobs.
A&P, which reorganized and emerged from bankruptcy in 2011, owns Pathmark and Super Fresh groceries. With the latest closings, the only Pathmark store in South Jersey will be in Ventnor.
"It did not come as a surprise," said Brian String, president of United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 152. "We had a premonition. We met with our members a month and a half ago and told them that we thought they were going to close these three stores."
String said A&P told the union the company was "losing a lot of money and looking for possible savings and to renegotiate the contract."
Labor officials renegotiated contracts with A&P when the supermarket corporation was in Chapter 11 bankruptcy. "My response was if, they were going to take the savings and put them into the stores and renovate the stores, we could sit down and have a discussion," String said. "That ended the conversation with the company."
A&P vice president Derrick Kinney confirmed the planned closures, but declined to comment further.
Some of the 56 seafood, bakery, meat cutters, and deli workers will be able to transfer to other Pathmark stores if they have adequate seniority based on "bumping rights" in their contract, String said.
The closings are just the latest, said Sam Ferraino, president of UFCW Local 1360. In January, A&P closed Super Fresh markets in Westmont, Marlton, and Plainsboro, N.J.
It was no surprise to one industry market-research analyst that the Pathmarks were on the chopping block.
"These were not high-volume, extremely high-performing stores in recent years," said Robert Gorland, vice president of Harrisburg-based Matthew P. Casey & Associates. His company performs feasibility studies on sites being considered for new supermarkets.
"Sometimes, it can be that a lease option was coming up. In other cases, the store may be underperforming."
Matthew Casey, owner of the consulting firm, said all three stores were unprofitable. Pathmark's lease in Camden expires next year, Casey said.
With the recent announcement that Camden will be getting a 75,000-square-foot Shop Rite on Admiral Wilson Boulevard, "I guess they [A&P] are getting out while they can," he said.

Don't know if I should put this in the pathmark thread the hills thread or the kmart tread.
i would put this pic in all 3 threads, since all 3 are mentioned
And maybe start a UA theater thread and put it there too :)
Pathmark was supposed to build a store at the former Sears site in Norristown, PA. It's a shame these plans fell through with the A&P bankruptcy. I thought maybe Giant or ShopRite could build a store at the site instead but neither did. Also the Super Fresh on Girard Ave in Philadelphia has the distinction of having been converted from a Pathmark to a Super Fresh and NOT the other way around.
Hi Stork. As far as I know, Pathmark was never an announced tenant at "Studio Centre" which is the official name of the redevelopment project of the former Sears store in Norristown. Where did you read this?
Also, The Girard Ave store was announced as a Pathmark, but was actually built as a Superfresh. No conversion occurred after construction started.
Here is a pic of the interior of the Pathmark Sav-A-Center on Frankford Avenue, with the "Sav-A-Center" interior decor, which replaced the "Path To" interior decor.

Pathmark most certainly had plans for Studio Centre, according to an Inquirer article several years back. Also, the store on Girard never was actually open as a Pathmark, but was indeed given Pathmark signage that sat on the store awhile while the opening stalled due to the A&P bankruptcy. I once had a talk with the manager of this particular store and he said a survey was done of area residents to determine a preference they had for either Pathmark or Super Fresh, and the results were surprising (guess which name they liked and which name they hated?)

This location has the current incarnation of the "Fresh" interior decor, which was put in instead of using the "Sav-A-Center" interior decor, which is a good thing.
Stork and MikeRA, thanks for the additional info!
Per the circular this week, you no longer need the savings card for pathmark.
Interesting since Acme did this a couple months ago or last year.
2 different Pathmark Sav-A-Center locations were in the news here in Philadelphia within the past 10 , but for the wrong reasons.
The Pathmark Sav-A-Center on Cottman Avenue, near Rising Sun Avenue, was in the news last week because of a stabbing that occured in the dairy section of the store.
The Pathmark Sav-A-Center on Frankford Avenue was in the news last night/early this moring for an incident that was in the parking lot.

Sadly with what I've read about the murder rate in Philly, I'm not surprised that the acts of violence are taking place in businesses.
And a quick story related to that. Several years ago a friend of mine - PB along with another friend of ours JF (who is not a friend of mine any more) were planning a trip to King of Prussia. JF all excited told his Mom. She asked JF where King of Prussia was and when JF told his MOM it was near Philly she had a freak out. She calls me and leaves me a voice-mail "How dare you suggest my son go with you to Philly?! Didn't you know last year Philly had 605 murders?" The woman would not listen to reason. She wouldn't accept that I was pretty certain The Amtrak station was safe. She wouldn't accept the fact that King of Prussia was not the same place as Philly. The three of us never did go to King of Prussia because of JF's Mom. We all knew he was kind of a Momma's Boy. But for crying out loud he was 24 or 25 years old! And PB and I were responsible young men 27 or 28 years old. We even assured her we'd take good care of her son.
The Pathmark Sav-A-Center at 8716 Frankford Avenue, Philadelphia, PA; as well as the Pathmark Super Center at 500 Lincoln Highway, Fairless Hills, PA; the Pathmark at 3399 Aramingo Avenue, Philadelphia, PA; the Pathmark Super Center at 2900 North Broad Street, Philadelphia, PA; the Pathmark Super Center at 176-82 Chelten Avenue, Philadelphia, PA; the Pathmark at 4160 Monument Avenue, Philadelphia, PA and the Pathmark Sav-A-Center at 1000 Easton Road, Wyncote, PA are having their Store Closing sale.
The Pathmark Sav-A-Center at 2101-41 Cottman Avenue, Philadelphia, PA; is having a normal circular until it's conversion to Acme Pharmacy. The Pathmark Sav-A-Center at 7700 Crittendan St., Philadelphia, Pa is having a 6-Day Sale that ends 11/4/2015, when I would presume they would be closed for 3 days for conversion to Acme Pharmacy
Pathmark, as of this past sunday, 11/21/2015, is now down to 2 stores. These 2 stores will be closed as of end of 11/25
there is a shot of the Pathmark of Aramingo Avenue in the movie "Creed", which was filmed when Pathmark was still in business
does anyone haver any pics of pathmark brand items from the 80s? (pathmark steak sauce, etc.)
here is my pathmark yahoogroup https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/pathmarksupermarkets/info
I guess we can move this back to the main supermarket section, because Pathmark is officially back as an Allegiance banner. The store on Albany Ave in East Flatbush, Brooklyn has reopened under the same banner. Now operated by Foodtown operator PSK.

The decor package looks a lot like the one Pathmark used in the late '90s. Is that the package this store had at the time of closing?

It depends on the area. The Pathmark that were rebranded Super Fresh locations had the "Sav-A-Center" version of the Funky Fresh decor A&P used.
Found this lovely sore behind the Tops in Tannersville, NY. Faded logo and junk carts under this trailer and every disused trailer behind it.
The former Pathmark Sav-A-Center at Franklin Mills (now Philadelphia Mills) has since been converted to a Indoor Car Wash.
