its boring:boring:
At least I haven't seen them try to put that logo on their storefronts yet
I pefre Macys Or Filene's they adaped more to a yonger croude then Sears Or J.C.Penney
hears a JC Penney that was bult in 1983 and hasent been rentvaded sice cool huh :tumble::bounce::bouncing::bouncing::bounce::tumble:
lots of penneys havent been renovated and are extremely dated. Our local Penney's has had the same exterior and carpet since 1971, and the same interior since the early 80's. It hasn't been remodeled because it's one of the less busy stores but even if it was it still woold look like a time warp
This isn't the store this is Their Boulevard Mall Location. From 1991 to 1997 (Age 0 to age 6) I got basically ALL my pictures taken in the portrait studio in this store.
Mall enterance of that store. Penney's needs to spend some cash on their signs!!
Second floor of the same store
lol JCPenney need to cleand up there act and make there stores new there was in in the white planes mall wich closed in 2001 that store was so outdated the rugs were a light brown the store always semlled funney the people who worked there were rude and the was were panted a light gold and the tiles were a light brown wood:insane: this store has since became a sears when they were fixing oi up there was a fire in there i remeber i was at the mall when it happend someone threw a ciggret into a pile of old drresses and it caught fire duh andways the whoel mall smelled horrble
Jeez..at the Eastern Hills location (The one not pictured) there's burnt orange and light brown carpeting and bright ornageish-red carpet in the changing rooms. Hopefully I'll be able to go tonight and get some shots.

lol coo do u have any old closed down Caldors near u ?:question:
No, there were never any Caldors around in my area.:flaming: I live in Buffalo, (Actually Clarence, a suberb):D
Finally!! Here's the dated Eastern Hills Location I was talking about. The only thing updated on the outside of the store is the facade. I think the signage may be orginal too.
Front. Another crappy Penney's sign.
At large.
Inside.
awesoem pics dude. I have friends of the family, who live in West Sencea. Email me, or something. It'd be cool to talk to you. My email address is in my profile..
Thanks. I took these with my brand-new Kodak EasyShare digital I got last week. I'll try to get more pics of this place when I get some new batteries for the camera:bouncing:
cool. I have a Kodak Easyshare too. What kind is yours? Mine's a CX7430.
hears the JC Penny in the Danburey Fair Mall sorry its so blureey this store is keeped up to date is was bult in the Late 80's 1988 87?
One JCPenney near me has probably never been remodeled outside and it's been the same inside since I was very small, I have 1991 pics of this store and it is nearly EXACTLY the same. I'll try to get a pic of the storefront, it looks like matte metal, never seen one like it...been trying to find out when this mall opened, cuz I'm pretty sure JCP's is an original anchor...I'm guessing late 70's, since the mall was definitely there when my family moved to this area in 1986 and it is way older than that.
i heard there closing more store at least 45 of them and i also heard that they might merged with a company called Sacks wich owns sotet like the Bostion store
Uh-oh. I hope the eastern Hills isnt one of them. I love this store!!!
I doubt you'll see JCP close any of the four Buffalo stores. Since AM&A's turned into Bon-Ton, Penney's has become the #1 dept. store locally and unless the demographics of WNY change...they will remain on top. A mid-level market like Buffalo is perfect for Penney's. Besides, of all the stores, those four are always busy and seem to do a good level of business.
I'd be more concerned about the impending takeover of May Department Stores by Federated. With four Kaufmann's, one Kaufmann's home store, one Kaufmann's Men's Store, and a Lord & Taylor in Buffalo...I would not be shocked to see Federated pair down some of these locations. For one, Eastern Hills and McKinley are relatively small. McKinley has the separate home store and the nearest Kaufmann's going south of Buffalo wouldn't be until Erie, PA. But Eastern Hills is a very old and outdated location. On the other hand, it's closes to the most affluent suburbs. A major renovation and it could be a goldmine for Macy's or *gasp* Bloomingdale's.
You bet the eastern hills location is outdated!!! Very dark upstairs, too..:o
hey, here's one more pic of the very dated eastern hills store.
hears the JC Penny in the Palisades Mall this is New Yorks Largest Mall and the 3rd Largest in the World
and anouther pic
No, actually, that's the biggest mall in New York, floor wise. Crossgates Mall in Albany is the biggest mall, square footage wise. And square footage is more important then the amount of floors :)
old JC Penny logo when it was Called pennys why did thye name change:question:
The name changed because the company's founder was named James Cash Penney, and they actually had his first two initials in the name when it started, but, they removed them in the 60's(hence the "Penney's"), but now, they have been put back in.

yep i do like JC Penny better then Pennys Penneys makes JC Penny sound cheep lol
See, and I think calling it "JCPenney's" sounds much cheaper than "Penney's." In fact, now that I think about it, I always call it Penney's. Locally, most of our JCP's had that 1960's logo for a LOOONNNG time, until the 90's...so plenty of people in WNY refer to the chain without the JC.
What's most surprising is that they have had virtually the same logo since 1972 when they went to JCPenney. I can't believe that in over 30 years, aside from the thickness of the lettering, that logo has remained intact.
Also, most of the pre-60's stores were labeled "J. C. Penney Co." or something to that effect, then it was "Penney's" with that stylish 1960's "P," and then "JCPenney."
but Pennys sounds like a Feal market or some sotta cheep discounst store the JC Helps it out in a way i like the JC Penny better then Pennys cause what can u get there for a penny:huh:lol
I like "Penneys" much better than "JCPenney". If you read my posts, I almost always say "Penneys". Everyone in my family refers to them as that too.
lol i still stand by what i say im calling them JC Penny or JC Penny DOING IT RIGHT thats what made them famouse in the 1990's and helped them in thaT TIMe BUT LIKE I SED JC PENNY IS NOT DOING IT RIGHT LOL:insane:

Well I decided to call it JCPenney's because some people call it Penny's and others call it JCPenny well I decided why don't we call it "J-C Penney's" that way the people who wan't to call it Penny's can call it that way anothers want it to be called JCPenney can also call it that way and combining "JC" of the current name with "Penney's" of the past name we get both names with "JCPenney's"and also seems to make a new name to possibly revamp their image to a better department store
In a way I liked the name "Penney's" (especially that cool looking "P" in the logo lol :insane: )but want also the JC with the name because people are familiar with the "JC" in JCPenney
so basically I wanted the name to capture more attention so basically I just added " 's" to the name no big change it still keeps the familar name just with an " 's" at the end.
In a way besides using correct grammar to show that JCPenny own the store by saying it's "JCPenney's" store it also gives a compromise between the people who want to call it "Penney's" and the others who want to call it "JCPenney" by combining both names making a new name "JCPenney's"
Heh...I always associate "Doing it (with the crooked it) Right" with Penney's, or JCPenney, decline during the 1990's. I remember them being a much better department store chain overall back in the 1980's when the slogan was "You're looking smarter than ever, at JCPenney!"
To me, they cheapened their entire business during the 90's...the stores were cluttered and the selection wasn't that hot. In the last five years however, I think they've found their way back. Of course, don't get me going on the "centralized" cash registers. I absolutely HATE those things!
Jag...maybe it's a Buffalo thing with the name. It seems a LOT of people around here call it Penney's. Of course, it's not uncommon for people around here to shop at Penney's, Hengerer's (not Kaufmann's), bank at Marine Midland (not HSBC)...and watch hockey at the Aud (not Marine Midland Arena OR HSBC Arena)...people around here are very reluctant to go by changed names.
And then there's the fact that the 60's logo was up on the stores for a long time. It's within the last 10-12 years or so that all of the stores signage was replaced with the JCPenney logo. Boulevard, Eastern Hills, Seneca, and Thruway all used to have the old logo.
BTW for all you posting out there the "Penney" in JC Penney is spelled P-E-N-N-E-Y NOT P-E-N-N-Y
its "JCPenney"
NOT "JCPenny"
just thought I'd make it clear on how to spell it so we don't get confused by spelling mistakes;)
Penney's Seems to have found a nitch. If you notice they have a lot of sales going on. Like 50% off kind of deals. They've taken a Kohl's approach to things, while at the same time maintained an expensive section, if you will, within their stores. It's worked very well around here so far!
okay how about ths for a new logo?:bouncing::bounce:
It's stupid for a store to really go through the expense of a logo change. I mean, unless it's so outdated that you have hard cold facts that you're losing customers over it. It's not necessary. It's just too costly in todays market for a company to change its image and logo. Why do that, when you can take that money and place it in remodeling or research and development? It's crazy! But Ames grasped that concept very well, as well as Hills!
Heh--I never knew the store was called JCPenney until I could read the two initials in front of Penney's rather than just ignore them and read the sign as "Penney's". My family is from the north, too and we all call it Penney's, even me (who never lived up North lol).
So jmn3, you're saying there were still stores with the old 60's JCP logo up untill about 1994-95? WOW. Actually, I can expect that from Penneys, as most of their stores are terribly old and outdated (Eastern Hills). The "new"logo hasbeen around at least since 1979, because the Dixie Square Penneys had the "new" logo for a while, and that place closed in 1979. It's very obvious the Boulevard JCP had the old logo, because the "new" one doesn't really fit.

Hey hey!
I'm just throwing around ideas thats all
just making something different eyecatching etc.;)
JCPenney doesn't
NEED to change their logo it justs seems to me that the logo has very little stuff in it aka boring
Besides maybe JCPenney needs something added to their name to sound classy I mean I don't mean to be "sexist" here but to me JCPenney the actual store itself seems to feel like too much of a women's clothing store rather than a department store which is the type of store I get bored in alot lol:insane: if JCPenney IS a "department" store then it should feel like one the
only parts in the JCPenney store that make it feel like a department store are the brightly lighted rooms with the jewelery cases that also house perfume and the parts with the furniture and home goods stuff everything else is like Caldor1999 said before is "clothes, clothes, clothes" sigh:no:
Anyway how about this for a name?:mrpink: "JCPenney
Department and Apparel"
and new slogan "its all inside JCPenney, classy but affordable style":bigsmile:

Interesting idea Caldor 1999!
"JC Penney Jewelery & Apparel
and Penney's Department Stores"
could be the names
BTW talking about JCPenney's seperate specialty stores there used to be one in Manchester,CT called "JCPenney Warehouse" a store housed in a
real warehouse right inside one of JCPenney's Distribution centers! :yup:
I remember it was a
HUGE store
BIGGER THAN THE AVERAGE WALMART!:o it was very dark inside and had warehouse lighting!
It sold everthing from clothes to books at I believe affordable prices, sadly they've closed it down for possible financial reasons in the company now its just a distribution center sigh:no: :( :hurt:
I'm hoping they could reopen it someday.:D:)

Jag...bare with me...I'm not POSITIVE on the dates..but I know this much...Thruway and Seneca Mall both had the 1960's "Penney's" logo and had them until both locations closed in 1989 when Galleria opened. Boulevard and Eastern Hills had them through the 80's and into the 90's but I am not totally sure when they were rebranded with the "new" logo. At Boulevard, even once the main signage said JCPenney, at the entrance on the Niagara Falls Blvd. side of the store, the little sign that used to hang underneath the overhang over the door used to be with the old "penney's" logo. THis was there until probably 1996.
There was a store I used to drive by on my way down south at a mall in Altoona PA that had the "Penney's" logo until like '97 or '98!
sorry lol..man, that's interesting. I probably passed under that sign a hundred times without realizing it (not being able to read back in those days didn't help). The Eastern Hills store must not have had the old logo very long..the Eastern Hills location was built the year the "new" JCP logo came out (1971) so it was probably replaced very soon. Or, knowing Penneys, it could've stayed up a while!!

Yeah, there's no "real" mall in my town either. However, right across the bridge from this plaza, in the next town over, there is a large JCP with 2nd floor in the mall there--everyone in my town and that one considers it to be "THE Mall".

Hey man, the McKinley JCP (the one in your pic) was not opened until 1991 or '92 (though I'm almost positive it was '92). The McKinley Mall originally had Sears and AM&A's as it's anchors. Later, LL Berger, Sibley's, and Penney's were added, in that order.
jmn3 to the rescue again lol:D...I had a feeling it was added later but i wasnt sure. Wow 1992..that store's almost as old as me.

I think I wanna barf:barf:
Hmm from ythe looks of it im gussing thats the dressing rooms so yea i would do this:barf:
this isn't the orginal wallpaper. Under this was different wallpaper, which is just as ugly. I'm guessing the "new" wallpaper was added late 60's-70's.
Theyre animals. Kinda creepy looking wallpaper. It's one of those "I-think-about-it-in-the-middle-of-the-night-and-know-it's-sitting-there-in-the-pitch-black-darkness"-type things.
The wallpaper under is from when the store was built in 1965, this wallpaper must've been added in the 70's to "modernize" the store (too bad it was modernized by some acid freak)
Notice how the older wallpaper underneath is similar to the pattern of the escalator wallpaper of the dixie store, just different colors. It was never replaced, either.
This picture from the JCPenney website is one of a store in West Palm Beach, FL. in the 1960s. It is ASBSOLUTELY identical to my local store--except for the logo, of course. Here You go. This is very typical of the design penneys used in the 60's-early 70's. This design and the other (The kind seen at the dixie square store)
Thanks Jag. My store is actually the only one I've ever seen still like that today!

There aren't many old-school JCP stores left at all anymore. For what it's worth, the stores they built during the 80's and 90's were so small and worthless...it's a shame they replaced so many of the big older stores with these shoddy replacements.

Ha Ha the JCPenney it my Torrington Stop & Shop Plaza must be one of those small & worthless ones!
It was built the same year the plaza was built in 1990!!!
Only if it replaced a larger location. It seemed to be JCP's game, especially in the Buffalo area, to replace the older stores with newer stores in the newer malls, but replace them with these small, chopped up, cheap looking stores. When I was growing up, our Penney's was always this great big department store with huge tall ceilings, they replaced it at a newer mall with a one store location that wasn't wide open, but instead had little rooms for each department. It was bad. A few years later they took all the walls down and opened the store up somewhat.
I dunno...our local Penneys was built in 1971 and not only is it small, it only has one floor. I think this may be because when Eastern Hills mall was built, Clarence was still a pretty rural area.
PS-That old Penneys looks a LOT like the old Northtown Plaza Hens and kelley, which is now The bon-Ton.
the closiest JC Penny to me was in the grallria mall in white planes NY it closed in 2001 and is now a Sears

I Never understood how that store at Eastern Hills was so small and especially that it is only one level. All of the other anchors at the mall are two levels. Jag, did you ever take a look at the rear part of the store? Doesn't it look like it actually is two levels? Like, maybe they closed off the second floor or something? I don't know as I'm a southtowner and didn't get out that way too much as a youngster...but it is really odd that it's as small as it is.
Also, the other JCP stores locally at the time, Boulevard, Thruway, Seneca, they were all pretty large...so it's odd that one of the four would be built on such a smaller scale. Who knows...you might be on to something there with teh fact that the Clarence area was in 1971 certainly not what it is today.
Yes...In fact, once when me and dad went to the Penneys store after not going for a while, I actually thought it was two floors lol..I think the top floor is storage.
PS jmn....does the Eastern Hills Penneys store have it's orginal signage? If you saw my pics of the store, you'll see that the store's signage isnt in The current Penneys logo (save the box) came out the year the EH store was built, so it was either one of the last stores with thr old logo or one of the first to feature the new logo. I dunno, Knowing the way penneys is, they probably put the old logo on the store even though it was old anyway!!

I can't say for certain, but the more I think about it...that store may have always had the JCPenney logo.
Some people call the store just Pennys. So shouldn't those people spell it Pennies?

No, not at all. Penney was someone's last name. I believe it was James Cash Penney, hence, JCPenney.
Anyway, you don't pluralize a name like that...it becomes Penney's (such as the logo during the 60's). Pennies is the plural of the word penny, the coin.

im happy its now Called JC Penny insed of Pennys
Pennys sounds like some cheep doller store as were u add the JC it makes it sound more upscale
the truth is i dont lke JC Penny they nevre have anything good there there most likey are gonna closed down in the next few years im also thinking the same for Sears cause they nevre have anyhing gtood there too
and all we will have left is the better Dept stores like Bloomingdales Nordstrom Macys and Lord & Taylor
QuoteOriginally posted by Caldor1999and all we will have left is the better Dept stores like Bloomingdales Nordstrom Macys and Lord & Taylor
JCP has done a good job of targeting the middle class market. They aren't as upscale as the retailers you mention above, but they are a few more notches above discounters like Wal-Mart. As long as they continue to close non-profitable locations and continue to target the middle class and not lose their focus, I think they will be around for a while longer. Heck, people have been writing Penney's off for over a decade and they are still around.
Sears on the other hand hasn't really focused on anything for years. You never really know what they are trying to do...hard lines, soft lines...it's something new with them every couple of years.

How did those holes get there? I'm guessing those pictures weren't taken on the same day.
Heres a JC Penny from the 1940s! :o
Here is the picture of the former JCPenney on Cottman and Caster in Philadelphia. I don't remember what this store opened as, but it later was a 2-Story Clover (I barley remember shopping here when I lived in the city..I must have been only 2 or 3 years old) and became a JCPenney when Clover closed. I think the JCPenney went out of business at the end of 2003 or early 2004.

If there are any...it's VERY few. Most of the Buffalo stores had that logo into the 90's..but they have all since been replaced. I recall seeing a store from the side of I-99 in Altoona PA that had the old signage until probably the late 90's on trips down south. It too has since been replaced. I think all, or a large majority, have the JCPenney logo these days. It's been their logo since like '71...
Yep, of course by looking at penney's signs you'd never guessed they were recently replaced. The Eastern Hills store's sign looks so old and beat up it looks as old as the store! Heck, maybe it is..

That sort of describes the entire Eastern Hills Mall in general. For being close to the wealthiest suburbs in WNY, having the amount of space that there is, I just can't believe how poor that mall seems to do. I was in there back in May and it was so dumpy. Even the new renovations don't seem to be doing much to help out.
And I'm sure I've shared my opinion of that crapola Kaufmann's location. Ugh.

This is a shot of the JC Penney's in Latham Circle Mall (as of 2-27-06). This is a newer location, built probably 10-15 years ago to replace an older store (that is now part of the mall near the theaters - between the mall and the new Penney's, I believe)
This is the Bennington JC Penney store - it is an unusual store in not being in a mall (of course, there are no malls in Bennington, or for that matter anywhere in that part of VT - you'd have to go to Rutland to find one I think). It is in a plaza with a Kmart and a Staples (former grocery store) and several smaller stores.
JCPenney is another store, like Sears, I cannot believe is still thriving. This store has always been second-rate, and for as long as I remember, they haven't really done anything new to their stores since the 80's I reckon. All of the ones around me look like they need some remodeling - especially ones at older malls (like Westfarms Mall) which have gone through several facelifts over the year. The JCPenney at Westfarms really drags this otherwise posh looking mall down with it's stained and scarred old building and dirt-filled signage.
I've got a picture of the JCPenney Logistics Center in Manchester, Connecticut near the Buckland Hills and (visible off) I-84 I took recently. It used to be a distribution and catalog store where people would be able to shop here. Now, I believe it's no longer available to the public.

JC Penny latley has done alot to improve there stores i now put them in the rank of being simaler to Kohls only a little bit more upscale i do liek them now and i dont think there going to gob anytime soon unlike Sears
This is the Croosgates store - it was original to the mall, but was expanded when the mall expanded a number of years ago.
The first is a small Catalog store on Route 7 in Cobleskill - it appears to be an appliance store that alsodoes JC Penney catalog, and also appears to have been there for quite a while.
The second is the store in Southside Mall on Route 23 in Oneonta.

I live about 10 minutes from Westfarms Mall - it was the mall we went to all the time. I still can't figure out why they've never renovated it (actually a trend for JCPenney to not modernize the facades of their stores) because it honestly looks the same from when it was built in the mid 70s. It probably was last touched up in the 1980s. The interior also looks a bit distressed against the posh image of the Westfarms Mall nowadays.

Actually I found out what year it opened. Last May, I was looking through microfiche of The Register Citizen at the Torrington Library for a supermarket logo I needed for a final art project for Special Topics. As I was doing this I skimmed by several ads for the grand opening of the (then) new JCPenney, and the year I was looking in was 1991.
So that store opened in 1991.

I hate JCP. Their stores are not taken care of. In fact, the escalator is broken at my JCPenney right now. The place is years overdue for a remodel.
Worst of all, they ruined Eckerd. They let their stores become the most outdated of the big 4, and closed many Eckerds as well as Thrift Drugs and Fays. Then they sold them to a certain chain that would become a monopoly with that acquisition, and even worse close most of them. Then what was left was sold to a chain that would ruin them, and then Rite Aid--and the Eckerds are still outdated. :flaming::flaming::flaming::flaming:

And don't get me wrong, I love JCPenney and I am of the odd group that appreciates their vintage, outdated stores as they are a sort of time capsule, but these signs are in sad shape.
The one on the front of the store looks even worse (alas, I didn't get a photo), but the one on the side looks just fine...must have to do with how much sun they get, or something. I honestly don't remember seeing it look this bad prior to today.
Also, it appears that the sign near the back entrance advertising catalog pickup and whatnot has disappeared...I noticed that on my last visit.

Those JCPenney signs look rusty. I agree with you guys that they need to be replaced with new ones. Maybe some black JCPenney signs that change to white when lit up, like on the new stores.
I really like the exterior on the one at The Brass Mill Mall in Waterbury, CT. It looks really snazzy. Wish I had brought my camera when my family and I went there yesterday.

Found this out online about the JC Penny in the Pheasant Lane Mall
Unfortunately, the site lines had been drawn up incorrectly, placing one corner of the JCPenney building in Massachusetts. Massachusetts, once again, declared that all customers in all stores would have to pay Massachusetts sales tax. Consequently, after carefully remeasuring state lines, the corner of JCPenney was cut off and re-bricked up into its current pentagonal shape.

Hilarious. It's pretty funny when the exit to the mall itself has a little sign on the ground that simply says "<-- Massachusetts"

At first I hated it but now after looking at it a while I LIKE IT! It's got a cool thing with the reverse lettering in the box.
Thousands of workers to be cut, pricing to be rounded to the nearest dollar, everyday low pricing instead of sales, and a deal with Martha Stewart that has led to a lawsuit by Macy's - meet JCPenney's latest turnaround plan. You can't say it isn't a bold plan, unlike, say, Sears/Kmart tinkering around the edges. Edit: Linking to a better Forbes article now. It's certainly getting attention. Saw an NBC report on the changes today and it showed a lot of storefronts that still haven't updated to the 1970s JCPenney logo! There are a lot of questions, including whether consumers will buy into the new pricing strategy or stick with retailers that play lots of games with coupons and percent off sales. The hope is that with everyday fair pricing consumers will shop JCP more often. I agree with everyone else that the new logo is hideous - why all the open space in that box? At least the jcpenney redesign made some sort of sense.

Eww... that looks terrible.
I like all the changes they are planning but I must say though that is probably the most horrendous logo change I've ever seen.
I just realized that the new JCPenney logo is reminiscent of the American flag.

Here's the commercial. It's called "Enough is Enough." http://youtu.be/aj3PfcPuauM
It will be exciting to see the changes in store though... let's face it... most JCP's are somewhat dated and dark... nothing exciting about the merchandise... I think it is a much needed change or they would have gone the way of Sears.

Perhaps this logo has something to do with or will be used for price tags. An article I saw mentioned that the three pricing levels (Regular, Monthly Sale and Best Price [aka Clearance]) will have tags that are red, white and blue (forget which color for which category), so perhaps this logo would be part of or somehow connected to that?
My wife shops JCP a lot and, to me, they always seem to be a chain that has their act together. I've been in four of their locations over the last year and all seemed well cared for and up to date, especially in comparison to some of the competition.
What the #$%&? I just found out about the "new new" logo today, but a few months ago I got an email from the company telling me "you'll begin to see our new logo on our stores soon"... and that email was talking about the "old new" logo! Perhaps they are going to use two different logos (one on store signs, one on products and in ads) like Sears and A&P did back in the day? Gap got a new logo about a year ago but changed it back because it was like New Coke. I wonder why the 2000 Ruby Tuesday logo changed around 2005 too.
This is our newer one - Avon, OH, constructed in 2009, I believe...
Edit: So, the article states 2007. It must have opened in 2008. The land that it and Lowe's is on used to be a driving range.
We all thought it would replace the location in Elyria, OH, by Midway Mall, but it hasn't. That one sported the "Penney's" logo for YEARS after I moved out here in 1996 before finally getting the black-in-the-day-but-white-at-night "JCPenney" logo.
The one in franklin mills is set to open in march.
The outside signage is the 2011 logo. You could see inside of it from the mall, and at the register or desk has the newest logo. So it will have a mix.
We've been visiting a lot of JCP stores lately, including this weekend. They've been changing quite a bit. My wife had a hard time finding things since they've moved some departments around. There is no longer, for instance, one big department for woman's clothes, at least not in the one location we visited. It was all divided up by brand. No clearance racks anymore, and some big empty spaces in the store, temporary until they get things sorted out, I guess. The Mrs. isn't impressed by the "everyday low prices".
This kind of churn is to be expected so soon into any turnaround. An activist JCP investor who spearheaded Ron Johnson's installation as CEO is pleading for investor patience:

I just don't like their new logo. Many stores are like Sears, very outdated. You enter a store and it feels like you're in 1995.
Sorry... But Jcpennys like Sears are stores of the past. Outdated stores, crappy selections, I haven't shopped in one in over 10 years. These two companies are the past sadly.
I think with time, the change in format, along with new product lines.. they will get it right.. it takes time... I think eventually they will reintroduce coupons and heat up promotions a bit- but not to the obnoxious extent they had.
JCP is eliminating cashiers. Will this cause the demise of the chain? People on their Facebook page aren't happy about this move.
http://pittsburgh.cbslocal.com/2012/07/19/jcpenneys-to-eliminate-check-out-clerks/
Here's a pic of the jcpenney in willow grove park mall which opened the other month, it has their current logo (which looks bad imo).
This takes up the bottom 2 floors of what used to be strawbridge & clothier until 2006. It was going to be a boscov's at one point, then never came to be when they filed for bankruptcy in 2008.

JC Penney not doing so good!

I just don't like their new logo. Many stores are like Sears, very outdated. You enter a store and it feels like you're in 1995.
To be honest, I like old stores. Whether it's a grocery store, a mall, or just a regular department/discount department store. I like the design of old stores and the way that they look on the inside, especially if they still have their original 1980's/1990's look since I grew up in that timeframe.

That's really very good. That makes me happy, especially since I have helped contribute towards those sales by shopping there as well as purchasing gift cards there for some of my friends.

JCP is eliminating cashiers. Will this cause the demise of the chain? People on their Facebook page aren't happy about this move.

I think its a good move toward the future. Lets face it cashiers are not needed now sure you still need people available in stores to help customers but you don't need them ringing up their stuff for them. If it wasn't for the annoyingly painful item codes on products this trend would have probably started years ago.

They don't have self check out lanes at my local JCPenney. I am now beginning to wonder when they will move to that phase though.
They don't have it at my local JCP either. I don't know why anyone would shop there. The carpeting is old, out-dated, ugly, and stained.
I got to get some pictures of the closed JC Penny store at the University Mall in Tampa. It became a Steve & Barry, now it been vacant since S&B closed. Now, the owner is thinking of tearing down the store and renovating the rest of the mall. The mall is a mixed bag of chain stores, independent stores, a sheriff office, the Tampa Community TV Studios and a day care center.
Johnson out as CEO of J.C. Penney; Ullman back
April 8, 2013 | By Marianne Wilson
New York -- Ron Johnson is out as CEO of J.C. Penney. In making the announcement, the company also said that that Myron E. (Mike) Ullman has rejoined Penney as CEO, effective immediately. Ullman, who served as CEO of Penney until late 2011, has also been elected to the board of directors.
Johnson’s departure was not all that unexpected given the chain’s mounting losses and sales declines. But it was still a stunning reversal of fortune for the former golden boy of Apple, who left the tech giant amid great fanfare for the top job at Penney.
Johnson’s brief tenure at the department store chain was marked by what many industry analysts felt were strategic missteps, from his decision to jettison sales and coupons to his pact with Martha Stewart, which embroiled Penney in its ongoing legal mess with Macy’s. But more than anything, it was the chain’s declining fortunes that did him in.
Penney reported a net loss of $985 million for fiscal year 2012 â€" its first full year under Johnson â€" compared to a $152 million loss the year before. Annual revenue dropped 25% to $13 billion. The crucial fourth quarter was a disaster: The company’s net loss widened to $552 million from $87 million a year earlier and revenue fell 28.4% to $3.8 billion. Same-store sales plummeted 31.7% and Internet sales fell 34.4%.
In recent weeks, criticism of Johnson’s performance had reached not only a crescendo, but an apparent tipping point as investors and the Penney board started to lose faith. On Friday, William Ackman, whose Pershing Square Capital Management is the chain’s largest investor and the man who personally recruited Johnson to Penney, publicly criticized the chief executive. Speaking at an investor conference in Boston, Ackman said Penney’s has seen “too much change too quickly without adequate testing†and that Johnson’s reinvention of Penney had been “very close to a disaster.â€
In early March, Vornado Realty Trust, formerly the retailer’s second-biggest shareholder, sold off nearly half its stake in the company.
When Johnson, the former SVP of retail at Apple, took the reins in November 2011, Penney was struggling with a dowdy, outdated image and declining sales. In January 2012, Johnson unveiled a bold and ambitious strategy to transform Penney from a traditional department store into a huge specialty store made up of some 100 branded shops, with wide aisles and a town square-styled area in the middle of the space.
He also rolled out a new pricing format, replacing the chain’s blizzard of sales and coupons with a three-tiered strategy that promised permanently lowered prices on all items, month-long sales on select goods and periodic clearance events throughout the year. But customers didn’t go for it and the number of customers visiting the stores â€" and sales â€" plunged. Johnson subsequently tweaked the pricing strategy and, most recently, announced the return of regular sales and coupons.
Johnson had been hopeful that sales would improve this year as he rolled out more in-store branded boutiques and the new merchandise hit the shelves. But his efforts were bringing mixed results. Over the past weekend, the chain’s highly touted new home shops were void of shoppers, the Dallas Morning News reported.

Odds are against J.C. Penney
Returned CEO will try to restore retailer to profitability, but it may not be possible
By Anne D’Innocenzio
AP Retail Writer
NEW YORK â€" There won’t be an easy fix for J.C. Penney â€" if it can be fixed at all.
As Mike Ullman takes the reins again less than two years after his departure, he faces a Herculean task in undoing the mess left by CEO Ron Johnson, who was ousted Monday. With the department store retailer in the middle of a disastrous overhaul that has driven away shoppers, the 66-year-old Ullman has to quickly figure out what parts of Johnson’s legacy to keep and what to trash.
The overarching question is whether the century-old company can be saved at all. Very few retailers have recovered from a 25 percent sales drop in a single year, like that suffered by Penney under Johnson’s watch. On Tuesday, the retailer’s stock price dropped more than 12 percent to a 12-year-low of $13.93 as investors’ worries escalated about Penney’s future.
“Ullman can’t go back to the old ways, but he can’t do what Ron Johnson did,†said Ron Friedman, head of the retail and consumer products group at Marcum LLP, a national accounting and consulting firm. “I think there will be a combination of the two. But he has to make some quick moves.â€
Apparently, the company’s board of directors felt Ullman, who served as Penney’s CEO for seven years and is known for strong relationships with suppliers and calm, steady execution, would be the best choice right now to secure the company’s future. But it could take Ullman 18 months to stabilize the business, says Burt Flickinger III, president of retail consultancy Strategic Resource Group. He gives the chain a 50-50 chance to survive.
“The odds are declining every day,†said Flickinger, noting that rivals like Macy’s are taking away market share. “Competitors see blood in the water.â€
Johnson, the mastermind behind Apple’s successful retail stores, lasted just 17 months. He faced an ever-growing chorus of critics calling for his resignation as they lost faith in the aggressive overhaul. The rapid-fire changes included getting rid of coupons and most discounts in favor of everyday low prices, bringing in new brands and remaking its outdated stores. Johnson’s goal was to reinvent the stodgy retailer into a mini-mall of hip specialty shops.
Instead, Penney’s loyal shoppers went in search of deals elsewhere, and the chain didn’t attract the younger and more affluent shoppers that Johnson coveted. Now the 1,100-store chain is burning through cash. In the past year, the company lost nearly a billion dollars and saw its revenue tumble by nearly $4.3 billion to $12.98 billion. Customer traffic dropped 13 percent. Steep sales declines have continued, say analysts, even though Johnson added back some sales events and coupons early this year.
Some speculate that Ullman may ditch the everyday price strategy and instead ramp up the return to discounting and coupons to get shoppers back in the stores. But that will still be an expensive move. Michael Binetti, an analyst at UBS Investment Research, and others believe that Ullman also will temporarily suspend the rollout of the mini-shops, which started late last year and feature such brands as Joe Fresh and Levi’s. That means that some suppliers who expected to have mini-shops could be left in the lurch.
Ullman also will have to find ways to boost employee morale amid severe cuts that have slashed the workforce by nearly 30 percent. As of February, Penney employed 116,000 full- and part-time workers, down from 159,000 a year ago.
Whatever Ullman ends up doing, analysts expect him to be thoughtful and deliberate in his moves. That’s a big difference from Johnson, who was criticized for not testing his strategies in a few stores, particularly the pricing plan.
The board “chose stability and experience, in my mind,†said Antony Karabus, president of SD Retail Consulting. “Instead of big, grandiose ideas, what they need now is someone to stabilize and execute effectively. He has a calm way about him. If anyone can do it, he can, because he knows the business. He knows the customers.â€

She probably just made that up, right? Where is the proof that JCPenney did such a thing? There is none. The proof that their business has gone downhill is due to the mistakes of Johnson which I hope can be revived and fixed by Ullman. As you stated Marc B, what that caller said is pretty idiotic.
Not made up, not at all...there are groups that track these things. Without getting too off track here, some folks very close to me are currently boycotting JCP for this reason. I don't know why JCP would bother going out of their way to upset such a large part of their traditional market but they did (primarily with the use of a photo used in a sales flyer featuring some gay men.) Now, whatever they do to try and get out of it, they upset one group or the other.
I really have a hard time remembering a major retailer which has imploded so quickly. They have pushed customers away in droves.

There are some people who called for boycot of JC Penny because of their support of Gay Marriage. My pastor said it in church that don't support the following stores because they support gay marriage and Macy's and JC Penny were named.
I was reading a article and they are blaming the downfall on the massive layoffs te company did in the last year.

I saw that commercial tonight, too. Twice.
Very sad. I've been a JC Penney shopper since I was little. I suppose I was in denial the whole time, but I went to spend a gift card I got for Christmas last week (that's how often I go shopping, lol) and I couldn't find anything to buy!
I love their Stafford brand dress shirts, they fit the best and used to have like 100 different colors. Now, there were only a handful of anything decent, but their size selection sucked. Last year, the whole work clothing selection shrunk from a whole dept. to a corner at the back of the store.
I would also agree, 5 years and this place is gone.
I don't know if it'll be as large as it currently is.... but I think they'll bounce back
I think they will bounce back, as well.
I think that the "jcpenney" wordmark (using the same font as "jcp") used in those commercials just might be their secondary logo, because their website still uses the "jcp flag" as their current logo.

I will have to say that I liked their non-flag logo better because it resembled their original logo the most. Like you stated ShopKoFan, all they did was change the, "JCP" to, "jcp". I have a feeling both logos will coexist. I would imagine the flag would stay because it has an American look, since JCPenney is an American brand, and the logo alludes to the American flag. I think this logo will be the only thing that will remain of the failed "fair-and-square" retail strategy. That "flag" and the "jcpenney" wordmark in the Gotham font will remain.
The previous two logos to the flag logo used the Helvetica font since 1971, after rebranding from "Penneys" to "JCPenney" to "[jcp]enney".
(edit)
I watched the newest episode of Saturday Night Live on NBC tonight, and during the commercial break, they aired the same JCPenney advertisement twice, and they
are still using the "flag" logo.

The East Brook Mall JCP closed on August 3
http://mansfield.patch.com/groups/corey-sipes-blog/p/jc-penney-will-close-east-brook-mall-store-august-3_d6ba088b
The closure of that store and reading some articles lead me to find out some history about the store which I was unaware of. That particular store started in nearby Willimantic in 1976 (Where BJ's is now), and was persuaded to move into the mall in 95.
Although the store isn't that old compared to others in the state, the store was left in the dust. As other stores remodeled and were updated, the JCP of the the East Brook Mall was left with all the original layout of the 95 move. A large catalog sale room sat empty. Nothing but empty racks and shelving for a couple years. Corners of the store were just left wide open. Very unusual for a clothing store to not utilize their space. Even before the company starting going downhill, it was as if they were going to phase this store out years ago.
We know JCPenney is trying win back the customers they lost, but more problems are mounting for JCPenney. JCPenney is in an identity crisis. JCPenney has reintroduced its 1971 logo, which they originally discontinued in 2011:

Other JCPenney locations that closed in the past:

QuoteStruggling J.C. Penney closing 33 stores, including 5 in Wisconsin
By Paul Gores of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel
J.C. Penney Co. said Wednesday it plans to close 33 "underperforming" stores by early May â€" including five locations in Wisconsin â€" as part of an effort to turn around the company.
The Wisconsin Penney stores set to close are at Forest Mall in Fond du Lac, Janesville Mall in Janesville, Wausau Mall in Wausau, Lincoln Plaza Center in Rhinelander and Cedar Mall in Rice Lake.
In all, 255 jobs will be eliminated in the state. Nationwide, the struggling retailer said, about 2,000 jobs will be lost.
Wisconsin has more closings scheduled than any other state on shut-down list. The state will have 18 J.C. Penney stores left after the five closings.
"Although we continually review our store base, there are currently no plans to close other locations in Wisconsin," said Joey Thomas, spokesman for Plano, Texas-based J.C. Penney.
The Janesville and Wausau stores have 70 employees each, while Fond du Lac has 50, Rice Lake 40 and Rhinelander 25, Thomas said.
Remaining inventory in the affected stores will be sold over the next several months, with final closings expected to be complete by early May, Penney said.
Penney said the closings are expected to save about $65 million a year, starting in 2014.
"As we continue to progress toward long-term profitable growth, it is necessary to reexamine the financial performance of our store portfolio and adjust our national footprint accordingly," Myron E. (Mike) Ullman III, said in a statement. "While it's always difficult to make a business decision that impacts our valued customers and associates, this important step addresses a strategic priority to improve the profitability of our stores and position J.C. Penney for future success."
Penney lost $985 million in 2012 and $1.4 billion through the first nine months of its fiscal year 2013.
Retail industry expert Howard Davidowitz said that he expects Penney to close more stores than those announced Wednesday, and that two of its main competitors â€" Kohl's and Bon-Ton Stores Inc., both headquartered in Wisconsin â€" should benefit from the disappearance of Penney stores. Bon-Ton is the parent company of Boston Store and Younkers.
"Kohl's and Penney's shoot for the same customer directly. Bon-Ton, I think, is a little teeny bit more upscale. But basically it's the same. If you take all three, they're shooting for the same customer. I think it will be good for Kohl's and Bon-Ton," said Davidowitz, chairman of Davidowitz & Associates, a national retail consulting and investment banking firm in New York City.
A company that owns Wisconsin malls where two of the doomed Penney stores are located â€" Janesville and Wausau â€" said Wednesday it already has redevelopment plans for the Penney anchor space.
Chattanooga, Tenn.-based CBL & Associates Properties said "we have been proactively engaging in discussions and gauging retail demand with this in mind, and are pleased to announce strong interest for the locations expected to close in 2014."
In all, the Penney closings affect four CBL malls. Among retailers interested in the locations are sporting goods, arts and crafts, and other retailers, as well as a traditional department store for one location â€" "all of which will enhance the performance of the malls overall," CBL said in a statement.

What's kind of ironic is that a Thrift Drug (later Eckerd and Rite Aid but now closed) drugstore owned by JCPenney in Allentown PA was next to a Lacoste clothing store. JCPenney ran a magazine ad in the 70's making fun of the Lacoste alligator (these ads were advertising "The Fox" fashion line by JCPenney which was to compete with Lacoste), but interestingly enough this particular Thrift Drug in Allentown was very small compared to all the other Thrift Drug stores, and therefore had to be without the JCPenney Catalog Center that most if not all other Thrift Drug (and later many Eckerd stores) once had. In fact Rite Aid since 2007 has accepted JCPenney cards (at all Rite Aid stores, not just ones that were Eckerd) to not alienate loyal former Eckerd customers.
Very few Thrift Drugs had JC Penney Catalog counters; they were only put in larger high volume locations that were far away from existing JCPenney stores. They did all take the JCPenney credit cards though; CVS also takes them due to the Eckerds they took over in 2004. I have no idea what store you're talking about that would have been next to a Lacoste store, unless it was an independent clothing store that sold Lacoste products; if there ever was a corporate-run store in the area it would have been in the Lehigh Valley Mall.

OOPS, I was thinking READING not Allentown. To a repeat Kutztown fair-goer the two start to blend together.
Since JCPenney changed their logo back to their pre-2011 logo, that will save them money, when it comes to updating the signage on stores built in the 1970s. A lot of the JCPenney locations near me have that logo.
They should have never changed it to begin with since their logo didn't look dated.
The one closest to me in Hanover pa closed down their old jcpennys and opened a new two story one sometime in the past 3 years leaving the old store vacant. The kicker is the second story is just offices and not actual retail space, it's like oh here's a second story want to check it out? Oh surprise you can't! Ha Ha! The place looks really nice but it feels kinda too upscale for it's own good I feel like it would make some people feel like the place is to expensive and not give it a chance.

The "new"logo hasbeen around at least since 1979, because the Dixie Square Penneys had the "new" logo for a while, and that place closed in 1979.
NOPE... actually that store had the original "Penneys" logo its whole life from 1966-1978, but was given the JCPenney logo in summer 1979 just for the filming of The Blues Brothers.

Out here in SE PA, most of the JCPenney locations has the 1973-2011 logo, the exception is the Franklin Mills Mall location, which has the 2011 logo.

JCPenney wasn't anything like we know it today until the mid 1960s, and adopted their current logo in the summer of 1970. It's strange how they spent tons of money for a name/logo change (from "Penneys" to JCPenney) at that point even though they already had a huge name/logo change (from "J. C. Penney Co." to "Penneys") in 1964.

Is this the same Thrift Drug/Eckerd/Dollar General you mentioned in the Dollar General thread recently? If so where is this store?
Yes, it is in Baldwin, PA. Sussex and McNeilly.

No, about the same time that Thrift became Rite Aid they moved to a new, larger
freestanding store at the intersection of PA Routes 51 and 88. So far as I recall the
old store closed as a Thrift and the new one opened as Rite Aid. Probably because
the new location was already on the drawing board, so why waste time and money
rebranding the old one.
I am sure they are regretting that decision now as a massive highway reconstruction
project is underway at that intersection. You can hardly access that store at the moment.
The work will take more than a year, and I'll be surprised if they can survive their surroundings
being torn up for that long.

Just pointing it out that the two instances of "Thrift" above should be "Eckerd"...
But at least one Thrift Drug is now Rite Aid but never was Eckerd in between: https://www.flickr.com/photos/62355920@N00/13320652344/
Actually you are correct. That new store on Route 51 was an Eckerd when it opened.
It has the signage where they squeezed the Rite Aid name into the blue Eckerd oval.
The other Rite Aid I had mentioned on the Burger King thread has the traditional
Rite Aid shield signage.
Just went to West Farms and I saw that Sephora is opening up inside JCPennys. Any other JCPennys are doing this around the country? Kind of weird since Sephora actually has a store inside the mall. Maybe they are starting to do what Macys and many other stores do, mini stores inside their own stores.
My friend's wife told me they have a Sephora at the JCP at The Brass Mill mall in Waterbury. She thinks that's probably why they closed the one in Meriden instead of the one in Waterbury.
Does anyone know if there are PDFs of late-70s JCP catalogs online?
I'm looking for details on a MCS (JCPenney's house brand for electronics) cassette deck from around then...
There was just a report on the business channel CNBC that they expect JC Penney's stock is supposed to do well over the coming months and sales at their stores to increase. However they also said that if the JC Penney is at a mall where Sears has closed, that could negatively impact sales at JC Penney.
Editor's Note: How can Sears being closed negatively impact sales at JC Penney? At the opposite end of the spectrum I've heard that sales are up slightly at Sears in Meriden, CT since the closure of JC Penney in May.

It does seem backward (you'd think that the sales at the remaining store would increase since the other choice is not there).
The only logical answer is that if there are two malls (relatively) close that both have Sears and JC Penney and one of the Sears closes, that mall's JC Penney might get less people if people choose to go to the other mall instead to be able to visit both stores in one stop. Of course, that would only impact sales at ONE store of JE Penney, not the entire chain (sales lost at one location made up by sales increase at the other one).
At this point Sears is where people go to park when the rest of the mall parking lot is too crowded.
Spooky Town Halloween Super Store has taken over the 2nd Floor of the old JC Penney at the Wesfield Meriden Square. I haven't been there yet, so I don't know how much of the 2nd Floor they're using. According to articles about Penney's closing the entire store was 150,000 Square Feet, so if the 2 floors were split equally, each floor is 75,000 Square Feet.
Despite solid holiday numbers (same-store sales up 3.7%) JCP is closing a number of locations around the country.

Today the interweb is abuzz with rumors of additional Penney store closings coming.

Perhaps just the location relative to other stores?
As an example, they have a store in Bennington (VT) which is also staying open (unlike the Rutland one that is being closed and is in a mall). The Bennington store is in a strip plaza with Kmart at one end and Staples at the other (old grocery store). I haven't been in the JCPenney, but the Kmart is not a huge location and with where Penney is I can't believe that store is either.
However, Bennington area doesn't have any type of mall, and only the Kmart and a smaller Walmart so that may be a reason it stays open.
The Granite Run Mall JCPenney location is one of 3 original anchors to this mall, along with Sears and Gimbel Brothers when this mall opened in 1974. The owners of this mall announced that they will demolish the JCPenney store and replace it with new retail space and a movie theatre.

Southland Center in suburban Detroit's doing the same thing-they're demolishing the long-vacant Mervyn's store and also replacing with with a movie theater, but instead of extra retail space, they're including sit-down restaurants.

Could be. Not saying they will, but if they were to close the Torrington JCP residents would have to jump on Interstate Route 8 to Interstate 84 to get to the store at the Brass Mill Mall in Waterbury. I know now that the JCP in Meriden closed my Mom doesn't shop at JCP any more. Even though there are 2 other locations near us that are practically equal distance from where we live. My Mom hates the Westfarms Mall. Too upscale. You gotta take a 4th Mortgage out on your house to shop at that mall. She also hates the above mentioned Brass Mill Mall. It's right in the middle of the ghetto.

I was thinking more relative to what else is in the area (other store chains) not necessarily other JCP stores. Like the Bennington example where there is only a Kmart and smaller Walmart, no Sears, Macys or other dept. type stores, no Target etc. so less competition in that area which might cause the JCP to have better sales figures.
Former Penney's in the East Brook Mall in Mansfield is being divided and becoming a Dollar Tree and Fashion Bug. That location closed around a year ago.

A surging J.C. Penney to re-enter category it left 30 years ago
JANUARY 19, 2016 | BY GINA ACOSTA
As more millennials enter the real estate market and a rising number of homeowners invest in updating their homes, J.C. Penney is re-entering the appliance business.
The retailer announced that it will introduce a leading assortment of major appliances in 22 pilot stores beginning Feb. 1. Backed by customer research that reinforces the company’s decision to enter the appliance market, the pilot is one of several strategic initiatives aimed at improving its home department sales productivity, the company said.
The company introduced a strategic framework in 2015 that focuses on opportunities in private brands, omnichannel and increasing revenue per customer, of which appliance sales will be a key component.
“Our research shows that the female consumer is the key decision maker in the appliance purchase process,†said Marvin Ellison, CEO, J.C. Penney. “Recognizing that over 70% of our shoppers are women, we’re going to improve the way customers shop for appliances by building an emotional connection with the female shopper who already trusts J.C. Penney to furnish her home and wardrobe."
Launching in San Antonio, San Diego and Tampa, Florida, area stores, each pilot location will feature 90 to 150 appliance models in a dedicated showroom staffed by trained and knowledgeable associates. J.C. Penney will carry a selection of kitchen and laundry appliances in a range of price points from GE, Hotpoint, LG and Samsung.
To increase its shopping appeal among women, appliances will be strategically adjacent to other popular home categories with select display models styled in inspiring lifestyle vignettes to help customers visualize how it could look in their homes.
After more than 30 years, J.C. Penney decided to re-enter the appliance business after customer data showed that the vast majority of its shoppers own a home and are frequently searching for major appliance options on jcp.com. The company also conducted extensive third-party consumer research, which revealed that the majority of those surveyed thought it made sense for J.C. Penney to sell major appliances. Respondents saw it as a natural extension of the company’s home business, and indicated that the availability of appliances would entice them to visit J.C. Penney more often.
“We plan to continually listen to our customers’ feedback and learn from our pilot operations over the next few months,†Ellison said. “Although our sales results in our Home business are much improved, it still remains one of the least productive areas in the store. The introduction of major appliances will help us continue to significantly improve sales and gross profit per square foot in our home department.â€
The company plans to make a broad assortment of major appliances available on jcp.com starting this spring. The national retailer will also leverage its J.C. Penney credit card and JCP Rewards program to provide unique customer advantages that help make new appliance ownership attainable for more families.
I still remember when a major portion of the first floor of the Southland Center JCPenney in Taylor, Michigan was dedicated to appliances and electronics. I was only like less than two years old when they took them out.
^^JCPenney bringing back appliances to their stores, what's next JCPenney to bring back hardware and JCPenney-branded auto centers?
I remember reading something about these department stores carrying everything (not just a few certain categories). Sears did it (and still does somewhat), Montgomery Ward did, and JCPenney all did. I hope that if JCPenney sticks around long enough, that they bring video games back to their electronics department and sell toys again.

Not sure about everywhere, but the original (or at least quite older) Montgomery Wards store here in the Albany (NY) area was a huge multi-floored building which had lots of room for everything including being able to pick up orders from their catalog (so likely stocked most, if not all, of the items in the catalog at any time).
So when the JCPenney opened in 2013 at the Willow Grove Park Mall in Abington, PA it looked like this, which I thought looked funny since the logo was so small (mmm Im surprised I never posted this til now)...

It's a familiar logo in a different color. Usually JCPenney has a white logo above the mall entrance, as well as a white (or a black JCPenney logo that turns white at night) JCPenney logo on the building itself.

Frankly, I like the red JCP sign over the usual white ones for the outside, but I think the box JCP sign looks bland compare to the "classic" JCPenney logo in general.

As with Macy's, they want to bring the brand standard up, and not all of the stores can support it. Expect a lot of small-town stores and marginal mall-based locations to get the ax.

Not surprised...This store opened back under the previous CEO, so it was a hodge podge of different ideas that only chased shoppers away, and feels nothing like a JCPenney on the inside and more of an 'Old Navy' style of interior with a very odd layout. I wonder if some of the other closures will hit stores opened during the previous CEO. I'm hoping Boscov's may want to try again (they were going to open here originally after Strawbridge's left) as they are a bit better financially now...I don't know who else would want the space as it is.
The problem with the Willow Grove space, is that part of it was converted to general mall space.
The original building is 3 stories. Strawbridge's (and before that, Abraham & Straus) used all 3 floors. When Boscov's backed out of taking this location, the top floor was immediately subdivided for Cheesecake Factory, Bravo Italian Restaurant, and Nordstrom Rack.
Once JCPenney expressed interest in joining the mall, more subdividing occurred. Half of the first floor was carved into mall space, with Penney's taking the other half of that level. On the second level, Penney's has most of the space, but Forever 21 does use a portion of it as well.
The space Penney's is vacating is 114,000 sq ft. It would be hard to find one anchor to take that amount of space, so I suspect that eventually, this will just become regular mall space.

Makes sense - that's one area where people would likely be interested to see things before buying, plus it may be cheaper to deliver from a local spot than from a far away location.
Additionally, there are times when something stops working and people need a replacement now, where having a local store to go to helps out.

Not sure, but the Boscov's here (Albany, NY) built onto the existing empty space when they opened - another one in the area took down an existing spot (vacant Caldor) to build their store. So it's possible that they could use the existing JC Penney spot and add on if it was too small for them.
That's assuming Boscov's even WANTS to open here, though.
Boscov's already has two stores within 15 minutes of Willow Grove (Plymouth Meeting & Neshaminy) AND previously closed 3 other stores near Willow Grove: Montgomery Mall, Franklin Mills Mall, and a freestanding store on Godfrey Ave.
I think Willow Grove will likely gut this space and reclaim it as mall space. The same thing was done 15 years ago to a former Abraham & Straus/Strawbridge's in King of Prussia, and it's been doing well ever since then (The Pavillion at KOP).
Doesn't surprise me they are closing Willow Grove, as said here the layout is weird in that store. It opened in 2012 when they were really trying to change themselves, so it opened with that weird layout and at the time the blue square jcp logo.
I think with the macy's closures, jcpenneys and surely more sears closures, it is going to be a really trying time for malls.

But the BIG question is what will malls replace said stores with? My guess is maybe repurpose the stores as more retail space for smaller stores.

I agree that I doubt Boscov's would have interest in the site; Boscov's adequately covers most of the Philadelphia market. Probably the only area Boscov's would want to open is in Quakerbridge Mall, but there are no vacant anchors to get in there.
One area Boscov's might do well is in Owings Mills, MD. It served that mall when it had to compete with macy's and JCP, but closed a location there.
http://www.bizjournals.com/baltimore/news/2016/12/13/demolition-of-owings-mills-mall-isunderway-as.html
The mall is being gutted but will be redeveloped as an outdoor or big box center, and Boscov's might do well as a central tenant, sole department store. Unless Boscov's can get in Columbia Mall (Columbia MD) bit that's doubtful. Assuming no Columbia store, I think that Boscov's could enhance their position in the Baltimore market by serving the western side of the Baltimore metropolitan area again. The White Marsh store covers the North/Northeast side of the market. As a detached mall site, it could be like their Christiana store or Granite Run.
JCPenney store closing list:

The Philadelphia area has been hit hard.
I wonder if high rent or just too much competition is forcing JCPenney out of King of Prussia.
JCPenney has closed Exton, Granite Run, and will soon close Willow Grove, King of Prussia and Philadelphia Mills. The latter was a small site like the Willow Grove site. JCPenney's only presence west of the DE river in the PA suburbs of Philly will be Montgomery and Oxford Valley, and Oxford Valley is quite north.

So is it going to be a enclosed store inside a store like how they did with Sephora? If so that sounds pretty cool.
I dunno, "Penny's is where the toys are" doesn't have the same feel.

As it is struggling, I wonder if JCPenney will be more receptive (than Sears) to selling a number of it's existing stores.
It sold it's store in Owings Mills Maryland to Kimco:
https://www.cpexecutive.com/post/kimco-to-build-110m-replacement-mall-in-baltimore-area/
Originally, I was surprised as I thought JCPenney could be a central anchor to the redevelopment project over there rather than closing shop for cash. But the cash is hard to pass on. Indirectly, it might have helped it's White Marsh and Columbia, MD stores. Now, I think Columbia's site (an A mall) could be sold to Bloomingdale's or the mall owner (GGP) as an example of where it could garner some cash.

I hope JC PEnny doesnt die as that will cripple some malls. But its better off than Sears. It has time to right itself.
JCPenney has a new CEO

Is JCPenney in a decent enough financial condition to consider relocating stores, if not opening new ones?
The one I had in mind is at Hamilton Mall in Mays Landing, southeast NJ - mall serving Atlantic and Cape May counties. I think the Sears site (which is closing Nov 25th) is a better anchor position than the JCPenney site. The Sears site is better highway facing. I suppose it’s important when JCPenney has to compete against Walmart and other retailers to stand out. That area is sandwiched between two Walmart Supercenters and JCPenney has Macy’s and Target as competitors nearby with Macy’s being the other surviving mall anchor.
In the past, the anchors with best accessibility tended to succeed. I also think the Neshaminy mall Sears (slated to close) is a better site than Boscov’s site but Boscov likely wouldn’t bother relocating there. Macy’s and JCPenney operate at Oxford Valley mall.
I fear of JC Penny going under! as that with SEars gone will cripple many malls. JC Penny is doing better than Sears and has more merchandising plans than they do and not closing stores at an alarming rate like Sears / Kmart or closing stores as leases expire.
At least one researcher thinks a bankruptcy filing will happen sooner rather than later due to low recoveries by vendors in the Toys R Us and Sears bankruptcies and bad management decision-making

JC Penney has announced another round of 70 store closings.
https://www.msn.com/en-us/money/companies/jc-penney-to-close-more-stores-as-sales-deteriorate/ar-BBUczmV?ocid=spartanntp
The list is not out yet, but I would be shocked if the one located at the train wreck
that is Century III Mall is not among them.
Only 27 stores are closing (18 full-line stores, 9 home and furniture stores.) The 70 figure is the percentage drop in quarterly earnings.
https://www.dallasnews.com/business/retail/2019/02/28/jc-penney-beats-profit-close-27-stores-new-ceo-even-convinced-potential
I've read that JCPenney will be closing
-Lakeforest Mall (Gaithersburg, MD)
-Hamilton Mall (Mays Landing, NJ)
Both of these are challenged sites, but I think there are more in NJ/MD in weak centers, including
-Eastpoint Mall (Baltimore area)
-Marley Station Mall (Baltimore area)
-Monmouth Mall (Eatontown, NJ)
In Baltimore, it could just operate at Columbia and White Marsh and sufficiently serve the market. Columbia is an A mall, between DC and Baltimore, and White Marsh is a B+ center servicing the northern/northeast side of the Baltimore market.
Marley Station, I would say, is at a tipping point. The loss of another anchor could be a death sentence. A shame because it's not a bad facility.
Interestingly JC Penney says that they will NOT be releasing a comprehensive list of stores being closed.
I guess they feel that when Sears repeatedly did so it became a self-fulfilling death spiral prophecy.
Word will surely trickle out in the local press where these closings happen though.
I was rooting for JCPenney to survive and improve, and thought some reduced department store competition with loss of Sears would help. But, it seems like it has no clue what it's doing. It really thinks not putting out a press release will help?
Add appliances, remove them. It can't figure if it wants to be more full service like Sears, appeal to discount shoppers (like Burlington), or maybe attempt to mirror Kohl's success. It's not going to be competitive over Kohl's and Burlington, closing out of those same markets. It closed out of King of Prussia distancing itself from higher tier and destination stores, then closes out of Hamilton Mall in Atlantic County (where it could relocate to the better Sears former site). Leaves not wanting to compete against mid-range competitors.
The latest news from JCPenney is dire. Can they survive?

A recent comparison with Kohls, which I'd say is the closest thing to what JCPenney was/should be:
My wife decided she wanted a Fit Bit for her birthday; she received a flyer from JCP showing them on sale, plus she had a small gift card balance and some coupons. (Yes, I'm sure we could have found them cheaper elsewhere, but ignore that fact...I did check Wal*Mart and the local one was remodeling and had none on the floor at all.)
The young clerk at Penney's struggled to answer our questions. We eventually figured out that the sale & coupons didn't apply to the watch, plus (the deal breaker) if you take it out of the box, it's yours forever. JCP won't take it back. After walking away from the Jewelry counter where they had them displayed, my wife went looking to find something to buy with her gift card. She found some things but when she spotted the line at the only open checkout counter she put everything back and we left.
A few weeks later we hit a Kohl's. There prices on the watch were lower, no restrictions on return, plus generous Kohl's cash. A very helpful associate (I'd call them by the old-fashioned name of "floor walker") spotted us looking and walked us through the purchase, directing us to the next available checkout (there were plenty). As it happens, my wife didn't like the watch. The return process was as easy as could be. While she lost the earned Kohl's Cash (naturally) it was all no-hassle.
10, maybe 15 years ago, we had 3 JCPenney's within 50 minutes & no Koh'ls. Now we have 1 JCP and 3 Kohl's.

This morning I drove past the Century III Mall location of JC Penney (the last surviving store in the mall).
They had covered the mall's pylon sign, populated with stores long gone, with a big red
banner saying "J.C. Penney is OPEN! Come in and see us!"
Not unlike the big red signs on the side of the Giant Eagle store in the remaining
bit of Parkway Center which read "Yes, we ARE OPEN!"
Life imitates the movie Clerks. Big banners which read "I assure you, we ARE OPEN!"

JCPenney's new look:

I went to Penney's when I went to the Brass Mill Mall this morning. It's easy to see why the company is circling the drain. Lots and lots of Clearance and lots of empty space in the store as well. I'll predict the company as a whole will be gone before the year 2030.
If they don't step up and try to fix things now, they will not survive

Lol you beat me to this, was about to post this. "JCPenney is in the midst of a turnaround plan", they have been a turnaround plan for years and nothing is working for them. They're nearly $4 billion in debt, honestly no coming back from that, it will just keep getting worse for them.
I give it 3 years max and they will be gone.
Ok, As JC PEnny is closing some stores it seems, I guessed it would fall between 100 and 200 stores, yet most chains close 1/4 of their store base in bankruptcy proceedings. JC Penny has got 850 stores. Which ones do you think are at Risk of closing? For me in NH: Concord (as that mall has 10 stores left), Rochester (it's in a dead MINI indoor mall where all the shopping moved near the Spaulding Turnpike), Keene & Lebanon (as the later have a Kohl's near it)
I was on Google Maps / Street View looking at former JCPenney locations that closed in 2017 when I came across this weirdly unusual one
It's a really tiny store in the middle of a plaza
Kind of gives off an old RadioShack vibe
This former store was in Winfield, KS

Ah, makes since this store looks like it's been here for a while
JCPenney discontinued their catalog in 2009, while this store lasted in 2017
So maybe it was a catalog store / catalog pickup store that was converted into a regular location?

It could have been a regular store - they had one in Bennington (VT) like this in a regular plaza - it was still probably a bit larger than this.
Main reason for it there was that there has never been anything like a mall in that area - the nearest one would have been in Rutland to the north or Lanesboro (MA) to the south. Thus, if they wanted a store in the area, it had to be in a plaza like this.

Makes sense. I always thought that JCPenney stores in plazas were rare, but apparently not, there pretty common. especially in their later years (specifically the early 2000's)
Every time I see a JCPenney store that isn't in a mall, it just looks weird and out of place to me lol
JCP had a very large warehouse on the east side of Columbus, Ohio. Attached to it they had an outlet store that sold overstocks, seconds, stuff returned by catalog customers, etc. My mom used to make special weekend trips out there to scoop-up on bargains.
JCPenney kept a lot of their downtown locations open for years, most of them around 70-90 years. The original JCPenney "Mother Store" is still open too
https://retail247.blogspot.com/2022/11/looking-at-jcpenney.html
A lot of the older downtown stores have since closed (most of them in 2017 for some reason) but there's still a few sticking around
