i have some pictures
i guess they went under this name to
Yeah, HQ was a version of Hechinger, and, the parent company was Builders Square(I think) and they had stores too.
Here's a pic of the Syracuse, New York location

A small logo for a big store like that !!
Here's the HQ logo...
Does anyone know which states had stores branded as HomeQuarters? I know when the weekly circulars used to come around in the Philly papers the circular had all three names on it.
(Kmart owned Builders Square and Later Hechinger? From 1886-ish until 1997)
All the stores closed in 1999.
I liked the look of the Builders Square better. All of the Hechingers looked like a HUGE big square ghetto looking box, and look kind of scary from the outside
Here's A Builders Square
(I'm not sure what the "II" means, probably an insdication of a larger store)
THat's a nice looking store! What became of this location??
According to a press release from Kmart's website:
- Kmart sold Builders Square to Hechinger in 1997.
- Builders Square operated 162 home improvement stores primarily in the Midwest and Southwest with 1996 sales of approximately $2.4 billion
- Hechinger operated 117 home improvement stores (64 Hechinger stores, 52 Home Quarters Warehouse stores and one Better Spaces store) primarily in the Midwest and on the East Coast with 1996 sales of approximately $2.2 billion.
I do know that HQ had stores in South Portland and Bangor in Maine and stores in Newington and Manchester NH...
Here's a HQ circular from july 1997 that i have.
Too bad they went under.. it seemed like a cool concept
Latham, NY must have been special (or something) - as it had (apparently, according to what you found) the only Better Spaces store. It was in Latham Farms, the store started as an HQ, closed & remodeled to the Better Spaces (which I believe specialized more in interior design stuff, rather than the construction materials) - then after the chain went bankrupt and closed, the space was taken over by Home Depot!

THose Stores Were All over Syracuse At one time. I dont know why they went under because Builders Square and Hechinger. were the only Home Improvment Stores in Cny.
I remember the HQ in Shrewsbury, MA. It wa a pretty cool store. Then Home Depot moved in driectly across the street from it, literally a few months later it closed.
I LOVED HECHINGER,I REMBER THE ONES IN MAINE.:(:(
I always knew HQ in ME & NH even before Home Depot.
In Bangor, Home Depot opened right in the back of HQ ! The stores were really close to each other. Home Depot opened everywhere and HQ finally closed..
I only knew of Builders Square. There was one on Central Avenue in Colonie(Albany), New York(which is now Kohl's), and one in Clifton Park(Albany), New York, that is now a Target, with a Kohl's next door..heh
There were never any Builders Square store located around me. From what it sounds like they were a pretty cool store! Why did Kmart sell it in the first place? I gather that they didn't do too well... but there has to be more to it than this.
Kmart had invested in many other stores not related to the core discount business over the years. Between 1994 and 1997, they started to sell these stores to concentrate on the Kmart business... !
At one time or another Kmart owned Office Max, Pace membership Warehouses, Builders Square, Sports Authority, Borders Books...

Heh. All of their stores look like that design above...
I have yet to see a Hechinger that has been converted to a normal store.
One location near me became a Brunswick Zone Bowling/ Chuck E. Cheese type place.
Others are still empty. These must be hard places to fill, or maybe someone is still holding onto the leases.
hears a nice looking one
Bulders Square
Hi everyone. Love this site.
Does anyone remember Tim Allen doing commercials for Builders Square in the mid-90's?
The Hecinger's in Manchester CT is still vacant to this day. It didn't last more than a few years.
The Builder's Square less than a 1/4 mile up the street is now a Showcase Cinema. The former Pace next door is now multi-use office space..

and note the slogan "The world's most unusual hardware site"
:o
It doesn't look to be owned by anyone related to the orginal chain (like servicemerchandise.com and wards.com, but at least someone brought back a little bit of the past.

I don't but I believe that he did since he was on Home Improvement at the time it made sence.
Who knows what happened to the location off the North Freeway in The Woodlands, TX? I know that the one at FM 1960 and Tomball Parkway (249) became a Sam's Club in about 2000.
the home quarters in norwood mass is still vacant. I went by it a couple yeras ago and it was still vacant.
The one in NAtick opened in like 1995 and closed in late 1996. why the short life.
every time a HQ opened, Home depot followed!!! in bangor Home depot and HQ were right next to each other!!!!!!!!!!! The old HQ in South portland is home depot.
Oh, and the last one I mentioned is in Houston (77070.)
here is the still vacant Hechinger in dewitt new york on erie blvd.
My dad has a sawhorse kit from HQ. There's a blue sticker on it that says: "HQ Service Desk Thanks You!!!" Cool indeedy.
This past weekend, I was in Syracuse, and took pics of the former Dewitt Hechinger, as well as the former Cicero store. Here are the pics.
First shot is the exterior.
close up of logo
store hours sign with all three logos(HQ, Hechinger, Builders Square).
inside shot through the window.
another exterior shot.
the store at large.
Here is the former Cicero location, across from the old Penn Can Mall. It is now a number of different stores.
The former HQ in South Portland ME. It moved across the street to a larger store only to close and be replaced by a Home Depot.
The store still has the HQ style but in blue/red instead of green. They also added a triangle top over the original HQ entrance.
Here is a small and blurry aerial view of the area. We can see the 2nd HQ that was built and the older one in the shopping center. It's already painted in blue for Decathlon and HomeGoods.
By the way, Hechinger is back in business but online only like Service Merchandise and MontgomeryWard.... http://www.hechinger.com

Simple. Home Depot opened about a mile away in 1996. Soon after the HQ closed, it was renovated into Jordan's Furniture. Jordan's gave the building a full exterior renovation; today, you'd never know an HQ was there.
That Home Depot has become one of the most profitable in the state. But the story is about to have a sequel: Lowe's is opening a store in Framingham about a mile away. Given the notoriously bad service at the Natick store, it's about to get interesting.

the short life was due to a store called home depot
As the "southern reporter" for the site, I can report that they did have HQ stores in the Memphis area when we moved here in 1994; however, they did close up all the stores quite suddenly a few years later and had all kinds of great sales. I do still have the bricks that I bought there as my flowerbed borders.
My favorite has always been Hechinger and I just thought that their stores were so interesting and they had such a great selection of everything for the home.
Does anyone know if the "86" lumber stores are still in business and what part of the country they are/were located in?

Yes 84 lumber is alive and well at least in Indiana they are there smaller and more lumber then anything else theres also carter lumber thats similar mostly located in smaller rual towns although 84 lumber has a store on I69 in Fishers that definitly not rual anymore Lowes and Home depot are less then a mile from it but its still kicking My guess is in the next few years with property values soaring they will close it and sell iot off
There are a bunch of 84 lumbers around here...I think their headquarters is in PA or NJ.
So updating my profile at greenfieldonline.com led me to this question and I find it amazing that Builders Square was on there.
I was reading the book "Dave Barry Is From Mars And Venus" (I love Dave Barry) and in one chapter, he makes fun of Builder's Square. Here's the excerpt:
"......Builders Square has a commercial wherein the singer bleats this hyperpatriotic song that makes it sound as though the people shopping there are actually building America, whereas in fact they are looking for replacement toilet parts.":bum::bum:
my aunt worked at the HQ in matthews, NC in the early 90's, she got her husband's brother a few ceiling fans when she worked there
Haha, I had to do one of those polls a few months ago and I couldn't believe it, Ames was still on it!
I don't recall any of these stores being located nearby. We started off with Grossman's and Somerville lumber. Home Depot moved in and pretty much that was it. Couple of Lowes have popped up here and there.
The West Mifflin BS is now a Burlington Coat Factory.
The Burlington was formally a Hechenger...The old Builder's Square was up in Century Square where Levin's is.

Your're right. I just get them confused because my grandfather would always use the names interchangeably. I would go with him to both frequently because he was always building stuff or fixing stuff, and there wasn't a Lowe's or Home Depot around at the time and he hated 84Lumber because they tried to gip him out of $100 one time.
I saw an HQ on Groceteria in a former J.M. Fields. HQ was founded by the same company as OW Office Warehouse which became OfficeMax in 1992.
A vacant HQ in Norwood, MA from MSN maps bird's eye view.

It didn't become OfficeMax, it was acquired by OfficeMax, which already existed and was founded in 1988. I wonder what their early stores were like.

I know, I should have worded it better. Their stores have not changed much since the beginning, like the one near me that closed in 2006.

The Builder's Square in Manchester is now the Showcase Cinemas
Showcase Cinemas got bought out by Rave. All the theaters are now called Rave Motion Pictures - Berlin, Southington, North Haven, and Manchester. Even after Showcase had made the Manchester theatre on Redstone Street a fancy place called Cinema Du Lux.
Former Builders Square in Florence, KY. After closing, it was an Old Time Pottery store and is currently a (huge) church.

Oddly enough, this same church operates another location in Norwood, OH in a former HQ.
And speaking of Florence, Kentucky, there was a HQ there as well. It is now split between a Dick's Sporting Goods and a Christmas Tree Shops (formerly HomeGoods). Photo courtesy of Kenton County Public Library.

Southgate, Michigan had both Builder's Square and HQ.
Builder's Square anchored the Southtowne Crossing Shopping Center at Eureka and Dix-Toledo. This one became an HQ.
HQ was at the Northline exit on I-75 next to Sam's Club.
Both locations closed in 1999. The Southtowne location remained vacant until the entire center was torn down for a Walmart, while the I-75/Northline location is still vacant today, in 2015.
Former Home Quarters in Bangor, Maine. Now a Burlington Coat Factory. The partially covered lumberyard is still there but empty. Note the marks still visible on the front wall showing where the original HQ front canopy was.
